It's the talent level though of the musicians. Regardless of whether somebody listens to x or y, there is no denying the major league talent on that lineup. It wasn't everything for everyone but it's musically one of their best efforts.

LMAO. But seriously, no way. A mom can marvel about her 3 year old's stick figure drawing. It ain't Rembrandt. It ain't Hals. It ain't no Renoir or Monet. There is a reason the music heads, even most of the casual ones, are abandoning this shit fest. You listen to a lot of different shit across many spectrums. But you are still in it for the party. The party was 2015. 14/13/12 were more musical. 16 was mostly a desert. 17 is a fucking wasteland plus Sigur Ros and a couple of other decent acts. Bayshbawb said the other day that someone needs to bring a beach alternative to what Hangout has become. There is always Seabreeze in Panama City Beach, but that's too smoothed out. They need some fucking rock and something more challenging than the chump shit Golden Voice is delivering to the masses. A dude I work with was laughing last year before the lineup came out. His wife teaches at a 20k a year private school. And they can't go because all the Sophmores and Juniors she was teaching would be there.
The tears are from laughing, but they're also from crying. Haha. Fuck you Goldenvoice.
Coming from day4night, I had a better time dancing to two dudes making beats off Washing Machine than some of the shit on this line up.
Proof:
Along w the young catered line up, the Hangout layout has just become a circus of random shit everywhere. I just want music, beach, and drinks. I saw some weird shit this weekend, and would like to continue that trend.

Sitting inside the carnival section grabbing some pizza with Florida Georgia Line being played over loudspeakers, I watched throngs of teens run towards the chevy stage as Ellie Goulding came on. It was at this moment that I knew Hangout as we all know it was pretty much over.
LMAO. What I think he's saying is that he doesn't care. You could see Krips at a pretty technical show, but then he'll be psyched up by the ultra-pop. I can't ever hate on him, because he's a nice and friendly individual on the forum and in person. But he is obviously way more tolerant of Goldenvoice's direction than most everyone else here and will probably strive to make the best of it. Sarah is similar in that she likes the festival and will go for the perks and beach week as long as there are at least a couple of acts worth seeing.
While I'm sure there is a general, for lack of a better term, grumpy old man syndrome happening here. Ya know, the "back in my day things were better." There is definitely a demographic change. It was still a very bro like frat party atmosphere in 2013, but it def is a bigger base this year.
But the "time" factor. Are we just not older and the fest stayed the same age? Def agree the bands are young as fuck. Not gunna argue that.
i mean Dmb in 2012 was pretty fratty.
I think being local makes it starker to me because I personally know and see all the people who are 21 and younger (even more HSers now too), while it didn't seem that way the first four years or so.
Gotta add Steve Winwood and Stevie Wonder to the short list of classics. Others? Agree Foo Fighters, RHCPS, and Black Crowes qualify. Not rock but, Allison Krauss is a classic given her hits and quality of her voice with Union Station backing her up. Chris Cornell was damn good. It seems Hangout is going out of their way not to pick up a couple of those type performers. Must be the money. I thought Lenny Kravitz was probably the only classic last year.
Hangout could book anyone they want. They have chosen to cater mostly to a high school and non musically intellectual college base of casual music listeners and pop fans. They can't possibly make more money except maybe on merchandise. Older people drink, eat and spend way more. That's just the way it is.
The group think mentality has been that they're trying to expose younger generations to Gulf Shores and cultivate future tourists. And I'm sure that's like 2-3% of what they're trying to do. But it's not more than that. It might be anecdotal, but how many kids don't know of the existence of Gulf Coast beaches? I'm betting it's pretty close to 0% (though they might not specifically know of Gulf Shores or Orange Beach). They want to sell it out, and I'm assuming they can bond out the early ticket sale money and turn it into the working capital they need to fund the festival.
There will always be masses they can sell pop acts to. Think McDonalds. But they're only capturing the proverbial low hanging fruit and are neither contributing anything to the festival scene nor the furtherance of music. That's just the way it is and why it has gone from sort of a gem of a festival that outsiders all thought was a giant douchebag frat party into exactly that.

...sum it up enough times and you finally nail it! For me, the lineups were largely comparable to any of the other open format festivals out there, and then the venue and experience more than made up for whatever was considered the 'big get' of the season that we didn't get. The last two lineups are just a whole different thing as noted above.
tl;dr would have been pop sells more than jam/rock. This is why jam fests are becoming smaller and more niche and Coachella, Firefly, ACL and Lolla are the giants.

I actually don't agree with this. I don't see Coachella, Firefly, ACL or Lolla as the same thing as Hangout. They are all way, way bigger (and so are many other local/city fests like Voodoo) and way more varied up. They may share some of the same HL's, mid and undercards. But Hangout was already niche as a beach party featuring, rock, rap, jam, edm and some southern rock/country. Hangout is more the size of Electric Forest. And while that is an EDM-JAM festival (Hulaween as well), they are about the same size. E Forest sells out way faster than Hangout. While I would give the Midwesterners greater musical sensibilities than the average Gulf of Mexican. Coachella can take whatever chances it wants. Lolla and ACL are Live Nation. They are big city festivals and are generally less pop than what Hangout has become. Or even if there is the same amount of pop, there is more other stuff. I think pop is now a specific target for Hangout.
I mentioned this earlier in the year. My nephew (great kid and a Godchild of mine), rarely goes to concerts or festivals. He went to Hangout last year with his GF and some buddies. He said it was the greatest and that he wouldn't be missing it again. But he is the definition of a casual music fan. He's just listening to popular rap or whatever else is popular at a given time. OTOH, my kids (who you know well and know love your ass) are constantly on the move from city to city seeing new acts and festivals. They are my kids, so obviously they were exposed to more than Top 40 radio (which they weren't exposed to at all by me). They are 25, 24 and 20, and they have no interest in Hangout anymore despite having some wild times there between 2012 and 2015. But the talent level has become such a letdown that it's just not going to interest very many people who have more than a passing interest in music. The beach party aspects are fine and universal (one can go get blasted, check out tail and all that). That goes for almost any beach parties. But the musical quality just isn't there. There is no buzz or edge. There is almost no avant garde. There just isn't much of anything that's going to set off a light bulb in any music fan's head that's going to say, "damn! I have to go to this!"
