You mean their *2013* album, and most recent release, Reflektor?
In today's crowded entertainment market -- music, movies, video games, comedy, TV shows, etc. -- only a select few can go three years or longer without releasing a new project without losing buzz and career momentum. People have short memories.
Of course, they'll always be able to draw a crowd, but they haven't been around long enough to have the kind of legacy artist status that ensures that any tour will sell out just about every venue. (And even Springsteen and U2 no longer sellout arenas and stadiums in minutes, if at all.) They've sat on the shelf long enough that the bloom is off the rose. Not saying that they don't make quality music, but they don't feel like the hot new thing. Boston Calling needs at least one headliner who seems "of the moment," and not just good and entertaining (and as much as I personally don't care for Sia, that's the kind of noteworthy booking that screams "artist who's just arrived at the top rung of the ladder.")
Right now, their best move is to release another album and tour, and then take 5-10 years off after announcing an indefinite hiatus. Then, they'll have reunion buzz (and reunion money) when they're back together again.
Taking time off is only a good career move if people think you might be gone for good.
Wait... so you said they didn't have a "high public profile" after their Grammy win for 2010's The Suburbs, but then acknowledge they DID have a "high public profile" when they released a new album... in 2013... after The Suburbs.
By that logic, Radiohead wouldn't have been an exciting headliner during the King of Limbs tour because they didn't capitalize on their In Rainbows Grammy win and produce an album with similar popularity and critical/commercial acclaim.
I get what you're saying, but it doesn't make any sense considering we don't even know what AF's new album will be like. Considering Refklektor's immense popularity and their huge profile jump during that album's cycle, they're more than likely to be "of the moment" when their new album comes out.
Also U2 sold the TD Garden out four times in minutes, if not seconds.
Fair enough, I had the chronology wrong when I referred to them not capitalizing on their Grammy win. But they have hit "Are they still around?" status among people who aren't true believers for having been away for so long.
Actually, the U2 shows didn't sell out that quickly. As is often the case with arena shows these days, everything in the lower two price points sold out in minutes, but the pricier seats (not secondary market, but face value plus TM service charges) were around for weeks. Once I heard about the unique staging, I thought long and hard about going, and found non-resale tickets available on ticketmaster.com for a couple of the Garden shows, but not at the price points I'd pay for U2. The cheap seats do sell out quickly.

I disagree about AF's standing. Just wait and see the reaction when they finally release a new single.
And fair point about the VIP tickets. I totally forgot about those in the mad rush to get the regular, common people prices haha
Thought it was worth noting a couple artists who look possible.
Just noticed that the Lumineers aren't playing Boston on their Spring arena run. They're doing two nights at MSG, and a show in CT, but nothing in Mass Andrew Bird and Margaret Glaspy are opening for most of that Lumineers tour and neither have their own Boston dates either.
Would love Andrew Bird back, and Margaret Glaspy is one of my favorite new artists of the year
Just checked Boston Calling's YouTube channel. The 2016 announcement video went up on 1/14, which is a Saturday this year.
Given the amount of press coverage the inauguration is going to get the following week, in old and new media, I'm counting on the announcement dropping next week, since the media is going to be hyper-focused on one big story 1/16 - 1/20.
I may be completely wrong about this, however. They could delay the announcement until the week of 1/23.
Here's the Bottlerock Napa lineup, which is the same weekend as BC. I don't know if they've ever shared any acts but I still wouldn't be surprised to see two or three come over. Probably more likely that they do Bottlerock and Sasquatch though.

Coachella dropped today and if it suggests who's going to be on the festival circuit this year and might show up at Boston Calling, there are a lot of acts who'd make a lot of people on this thread happy.

Guys this Coachella lineup is giving me too much hope.
Final-ish mock? Based upon other posts in this thread, and this is granted we'll get some crossover with Bottlerrock. I forget if we have had any of that in the past, cuz if not some of these artists can be replaced with slightly bigger names and it could be switched around. Mumford isn't doing Bottlerock which (still) leaves them, potentially, open for BC. I think this has too much overlap with Bottlerock and tbh they are probably going to have 20 more artists than this, so room for more rap and guitar stuff (like that one country/acoustic guitar based act and a 'legends' spot if you will). Would we consider Lorde (as much as I love her and her set in 14) coming back? I've heard she may do Gov Ball the weekend after BC. idk.
MUMFORD and SONS | BON IVER | CHANCE the RAPPER | WEEZER the XX | SIGUR ROS | TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB | DILLION FRANCIS (or other crappy edm) GLASS ANIMALS | FITZ and the TANTRUMS | RAE SREMMURD YOUNG the GIANT | GROUPLOVE | CAPITAL CITIES | PHANTOGRAM DRAM | LIL YACHTY | COLD WAR KIDS CATFISH and the BOTTLEMEN | SAINT MOTEL | BOB MOSES BISHOP BRIGGS | JOSEPH | AURORA | DUA LUPIA FRANCIS and the LIGHTS | COIN | 888
Trying to keep this as realistic as possible but who knows.

Oh god I hope not. That'd be a solid no for me. Maybe I'd go if I could see Bon Iver and Sigur Ros on one day. For the record, last year and 2015 there was 0 crossover between BottleRock and BC. And you're missing the other "confirmed" acts we have (Kaytranada, Modern Baseball)

Dont see Mumford playing this. But I'd guess that the top 5 of this lineup will come close to looking like this: Bon Iver - Lorde - The XX - Chance - Sigur Ros

I think BC should get more credit. They've booked some great and interesting acts in the past. No offense, but that mock is horrid and would be even lower than my current floor level expectations.

oh yeah that's right! I forgot about them i thought i was missing something. And ok yea, I thought so but I wasn't 100% sure- this would mean that entire 2nd to last line would not exist lol

Hey man none taken! You're right this is a more typical thing, Last year I can't recall another fest that had Janelle Monae on the lineup. It's just really hard to predict anything with this new location and expansion.
Also, does anybody know if they are actually doing comedy and that film fest thing? or was that scrapped?

I just feel like there should be a least one 'guitar' based (okay maybe not Mumford, maybe Killers {strokes would be a long shot I'd say}) headliner, ya? Love Lorde, Chance, but I just feel that may be too 'one-tone' for a top line..?
I noticed that BottleRock hasn't had a duplicate with BC in the last 2 years.. So I wouldn't count on any of their 2017 acts coming...
Which is sad cause i would love to have Bob Moses or Lewis Del Mar on BC's lineup
I didn't think Bob Moses live were all that great and I love both their albums. Put them in the daylight at Boston Calling and I can't see it getting better. Wouldn't complain if they were there, but not a terrible loss. Think of the stuff to be thankful for: We probably don't have to worry about Macklemore!

I think they had some comedians last year on the third stage, so I'm thinking that will stay.

I don't see a reason for the comedy and film to be scrapped. I'd think given the fact that they had a big name attached to the film festival odds are it's still on or else we would have heard about it not happening.
As for the headliner, I definitely think Mumford is an option. Chance and Lorde are fairly different both in style and audience, but fwiw I don't think Lorde will be there. The Killers and The Strokes seem equally likely to me at this point, they both tend to do a couple festivals every year but neither has done a full tour in a while.
My current guesses: Mumford & Sons - Bon Iver - Chance the Rapper - The xx Kendrick Lamar - The Strokes - Bon Iver - Chance the Rapper

Yeah I suppose the XX would be on top line if they are 2nd at Coach, eh?
Whatever happened to that account who only posted artist names (Bon Iver and Chance) and then that one pic of Weezer?
