I mean, a lot of people thought Anderson Paak was going to be a shoe-in to sub and he ended up being third line, and I don’t think anybody really considered Janelle Monáe and Solange as possible subs. I think our main takeaway from this as we head more into mock season is that anyone can sub! Robyn can sub! J. Cole can sub! Fontaines DC can sub! Why the hell not? We’re almost certainly going to get it wrong anyway.

Let’s not forget about SZA subbing out of no where. Paul has made it very clear that he’s trying to make a more balanced gender lineup. I shouldn’t have made J. Cole third on his day, but honestly just got tired of reformatting the poster constantly trying to fit all the names. I wanted a high profile rapper with a short name and he fit the bill.
I highly doubt Solange will return. I am notoriously anti-Knowles and get a lot of hate on the sub for it (not here to argue the merits of my standpoint), but I feel like she kinda burned GV. Sure that TMZ article came out that her entire band got sick at the same time, which seemed sooooo likely. Overall it feels like she just couldn't get her shit together in time.
I agree that Solange isn't likely to be booked for 2020, but this is a lot of motivated reasoning. It's clear you don't like Solange, and that's fine, but there is no reason to doubt that she cancelled because her band got sick and she couldn't pull off the performance she wanted.
I think her album landing with a thud has just as much to do with her not being rebooked. She was a bit of a reach as a sub from a popularity standpoint, and the album didn't get her there like they thought it would.
I mean.....I straight up admitted that I'm not a fan of the sisters. It's more how they act like they are God's gift to earth, and their fans, then the music itself.
There are lots of reasons to doubt that the TMZ article was legit. This reads like an excuse a kid makes up because they don't want to go to school. Even if we do take it at face value, she still failed to have her production ready in time. The details are somewhat irrelevant. www.tmz.com/2019/04/08/solange-knowles-cancel-coachella-performance-band-not-ready/
Did it really land with a thud? I thought it was really critically acclaimed, but we all know that doesn't translate into sales. All in all it doesn't matter the reason why, I'd be shocked if she returns to the festival any time soon.
Someone with very loose connections (but connections nevertheless) told me
Lana Del Rey Tool Travis Scott
I'm unsure how I would feel about this.
Yes to Tool, no to the others. Some dude with a throwaway is also claiming Lana as a HL on the sub, apparently he met her at the OC Fair and she said she was performing (somewhat believable), but then came back on an alt account with a more tenuous story saying she claimed she was headlining. Who knows. If we get Tool I'd be thrilled.
Now that I think about it. This would so closely mimic last years headliners which was bad for sales, so I'm doubtful. 1. Promotion rapper, 2. Band that a lot of people like, but NOT everyone. 3. Promotion pop star. I know PT claims he books whoever without thinking like this, but you have to assume they aren't going to want to replicate last years sales.
Travis has headlined most other huge fests. I wouldn’t consider him a promotion. Especially with a new album Edit: also wouldn’t consider Gambino a promotion either for the same reasons

As someone who likes Tool, that set is going to compete for the least attended headlining set in history. And I’ll love every minute of it.
Sure they deserve to headline - but they couldn’t be further removed from Coachella audience in 2020. I’m having trouble imagining their fan base even buying a Coachella ticket nowadays.

I think there's a renewed excitement for Tool from the new album. Their day at Aftershock festival is sold out while the other two days haven't even gotten to the final pricing tier.

I went to Gov ball in 2017, and the Tool day was easily the least attended day of the festival. Tool absolutely killed it,, but Tool isn’t playing this thing. Fucking A Perfect Circle had less than 2,000 people show up for their show in 2018.

I think Tool having a new album and putting their music online changes the calculus here a little. Coachella would be dumb to pay them a lot, but booking Tool to get their name out to a new generation of fans as part of a larger AEG produced tour isn’t the craziest thing they could do.

*See Gov Ball 2017
They didn't have a new album for Gov Ball. And this new album + back catalog release is doing (relative) gangbusters; "Fear Inoculum" just became the longest single ever to chart on the Hot 100, all of their albums immediately shot to the top 10 in iTunes album sales upon release (all five made the Billboard 200 as well), they hold all of the top 10 spots on the Billboard digital rock songs chart, and they're #1 on the Billboard Artists 100 chart. Very different fan energy than 2017. I don't get Tool at all, they're absolutely not my thing, I would skip them if they play, but they're making a stronger case than I would've imagined to be a legitimate headliner in 2020.

Meanwhile I'm over here hoping the "Blinded By The Light" becomes a sleeper smash hit movie, reinvigorating public interest in Bruce Springsteen and launching him into a headlining set on what could be the final E Street Band tour. So what do I know.

Judging from Instagram, it does look like Lana was at the OC Fair but likely the whole story was fabricated around finding those pictures. They claimed that Lana dm’ed them on Insta and told them they were headlining. Sounds like bs.
Also, I’m not buying Lana/Tool/Travis from an account with 5 posts either. Come on, you guys are better than this.

Lana/Tool/Travis was such a silly suggestion it wasn't worth a response in full, even if Tool/Travis at least are not out of the realm of possibility.

Lol I don't think anyone is taking it seriously, just discussing.
As for Tool. They are charting a little. #1 on the Billboard 100 Artists right now (does that mean anything?) They have the longest song ever on the Billboard Hot #100. Spotify Streams are decent for only being on streaming for what a few weeks? Around 4MM people have listened to them in that short time.
I can hardly call them a "shoe in" but I can imagine a world where they balance out some poppier other choices. Not impossible.

lol
It's incredible that you can't see how your distaste for Solange and your refusal to believe TMZ's reporting on the topic in favor of a theory that fits your priors might be related to one another. TMZ is annoying but they don't make stuff up.
anyway, let's move on. I think Tool could headline but they would need two pretty big popular names to put them on the bill. Like two of Travis Scott, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift could work. Don't think Tool works with someone like Lana unless Daft Punk is the third headliner.

TMZ lies quite a bit. They reported Lil Wayne was being read his last rights after seizures 3 or 4 years ago. There is more shit they’ve gotten wrong in the past that I don’t feel like looking up at the moment. Doesn’t mean they weren’t right about the Solange issues, but they aren’t the fucking bastion of journalistic integrity.
