It's incredible that you can't see how your distaste for Solange and your refusal to believe TMZ's reporting on the topic in favor of a theory that fits your priors might be related to one another. TMZ is annoying but they don't make stuff up.
anyway, let's move on. I think Tool could headline but they would need two pretty big popular names to put them on the bill. Like two of Travis Scott, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift could work. Don't think Tool works with someone like Lana unless Daft Punk is the third headliner.
TMZ lies quite a bit. They reported Lil Wayne was being read his last rights after seizures 3 or 4 years ago. There is more shit they’ve gotten wrong in the past that I don’t feel like looking up at the moment. Doesn’t mean they weren’t right about the Solange issues, but they aren’t the fucking bastion of journalistic integrity.
They get stuff wrong for sure. They don't make stuff up. When it lines up with what the festival said about Solange's cancellation, especially with a complete lack of reason to believe otherwise, it's just grinding an axe.
In the interest of the thread moving on, I'm not gonna reply on this anymore. Last word to either of you if you want it

I’m not even talking about the Solange thing being made up by them. But feel free to take the high road on your stupid point.
I don’t know how to follow up my post. It’s what I was told and I believe my contact would have no reason to lie to me.
That is all i’l say. I thought I’d share it with inforoo as none of the headliners can be ruled out (yet).
Out of interest. Why is the trio silly?
Because there's no clear #1. Because Tool and LDR's albums don't synch with Coachella at all. Because it's silly to think Tool would play this. Because it would probably sell nowhere close to 250k tickets seeing Tool and LDR are touring this year and Travis Scott has been everywhere the last 18 months. Because it might be time for PT to step down if it's response to the weakest pre-sale (2020) and weakest on-sale (2019) in a decade was an obscure alt-rock band and borderline HL rap and pop acts.
The only way a Tool booking would make sense is if you add a Mars Volta reunion and maybe the Mr. Bungle reunion and double down on 90s era alt rock. But even with that, feels like Nine Inch Nails would hit the same demo and be much more appealing to the rest of the festival.
Feel like I’m kind of poking the bear here, but out of genuine curiosity, as of right now who do you all think would be the most bankable headliner for next year?

By booking two other acts that will have really undersized crowds? Do it for the marks!

I don’t think Tool or Travis Scott are weird or out of place. They just seem like too much of a shoe-in out of 2020 headliner candidates imo. Like if I were going to pick two acts just out of my ass (not that the OP did that), it would be those. I think they’d be fine and as we all know, this shit WILL sell.

Tool is much less popular than Tame LDR less popular than Arianna Travis doesn’t have as much cross appeal as Gambino does.
Last year they were having big problems with week 2. Presale is now worse. Tell me again how those 3 wouldn’t be a problem
This a $430 festival and besides the undercard, they aren’t doing anything special compared to main competitors

Tool has headlined before and they could again. Phoenix and The Stone Roses are probably smaller than Tame and they headlined too, (because it doesn’t matter mostly). They also have a history with Maynard and his top project is about to put out their first project in almost 20 years. Travis will headline, there is no question. LDR IS less popular than Arianna (Problem Dog was right).
As far as sells go, all festivals for the most part have slowed down. Also, ‘slow’ doesn’t account for all the money they still made over two weekends. They are the top competitor. 50 years from now this will likely be the event people still talk about. It is a cultural landmark at this point and probably won’t go anywhere outside of maybe going back to one weekend at most. Now that we have grown accustomed to these kinds of fests the desire will still be there and they have only established themselves even more, especially this one.
Travis doesn’t have as much cross appeal as Gambino does.
Is this a joke?
Gambino attracts rap listeners and fans of other genres. Travis doesn’t. This coming from a Travis fan.
But you think people who don’t listen to much rap rather listen to Travis or Gambino?
And for the Tool vs Tame arguement. I’m not sure how to gauge Tools popularity for the average casual Coachella goer. I bet more people that go to Coachella would go to Tame. Look at crowd comparisons from Tame to a perfect circle or other bands

I actually agree with Drumpf about Travis/Gambino. Gambino had the biggest crowd in Outside Lands history last weekend. He’s got broader appeal than Travis does right now. (It’s close, and in a few years Travis will likely overtake him. But I’ll defend that take.)

I don’t think there’s any reason to argue the two is the thing. Tame is certainly more popular right now with this demo, but both are headliners here. Gorillaz played to a small crowd too fwiw. They can push a lineup even with a lite-headliner (see Tame) and I’d like to think they will continue to have the courage to do so. IF Tool played they would obviously get top billing on their day and I don’t think this festival is so far removed from rock that they wouldn’t book them again.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure Flume had a bigger crowd than Gambino did, if anything because of the counter-programming.
But I also definitely agree that Gambino has more crossover appeal than Travis.
