I'd venture to say about 20% of people I know keep up with politics, only half of them in any real educated sense. It boggles my mind how many well-educated, young, capable, and active people out there have zero idea about the current candidates nor do they care. It's why our generation will always struggle against boomers, because that generation actually pays attention. What they pay attention to, and the wackos that they get their info from, are a different story.

The political apathy thing really will be the downfall of this country. I am embarassed by my generations lack of enthusiasm about politics, it's like they were tricked into buying out of interest in it and that's such a waste. Gen Z seems to be moving back toward interests in the topic and not just "social progression" which is a relief but then I worry millenials will become the new puppets of the GOP or Dems to replace the greys.
I'd so much rather disagree with my friends for their political insights because they have them, and not because they simply gave up on politics or half assed their way into a corner and stayed there.

My sister teaches third grade and told my mom before the last election that she doesn't know the difference between Democrat and Republican. Like, she just didn't know anything about it. And she teaches children.
And anytime I challenge my mom to this k about why Republicans are terrible she always throws her hands up and uses the copout of "they're all the same. Politicians just want power but they're not different" which makes me furious
We argue so much about the DNC gameplan, but despite their faults could we really expect them to win over people even if they had a great gameplan?
I mean, your average voter is this dumb:
Yes, they can win some of them back by appealing to their material needs. But it's not just about winning people back it's about bringing people in and keeping them. You do that, again, by appealing to their material needs and by offering them something to believe in and get excited about. One of the reasons Bernie has so much appeal is his programs are universal. It's strait-forward and easier to latch on to. There's not much means testing or overly complicated plans that people don't understand.... at least in presentation. The GND or M4A are obviously complicated plans to put into practice. Also, universal programs don't create the divisiveness and animosity means testing can lead to.
Let's take the Green New Deal for example. It brings in young voters for obvious reasons. Once you do that you create loyalty. You give them something to believe in and come back in vote to secure it's success. The same for health care, as we saw with Obamacare in 2018. Even thought it's got a lot of problems it improved a lot of people's lives. So people wanted it secured for themselves or family and friends.
I'd also point out that your average voter is likely pretty dumb but that only represents like half the potential voters in the country.

BTW, I flipped two of the people I'd original had sold on Warren over to Bernie. But the big news is I've got my Trump supporting dad to vote for Bernie in the primary. Been chipping away at it for awhile. Tonight he brought it up on his own and said he was voting for him because everyone in his family has student loan debt. He says he's considering it in the general too but we'll see. I think I can keep him on board with the GND because he knows how important it is to me.
Soooooo that makes 28, bitches. We've got almost all of March for early voting. I will make sure every one of them makes it. Got a couple more I'm working on but have lost faith in a couple others. Including my once radical cousin who turned to Jesus. Fuck!
Just so everyone is on the same page, Rasmussen is the most conservative leaning of the major pollsters. So this isn't even, "My mom says I'm handsome." It's more like, "My mom says I'm just barely above average looking." This would be deeply embarrassing if anyone in the administration had any shame.

I never bothered trying to turn any family members for Bernie, believing it to be a futile exercise.
But then I saw an Occupy comrade post something the other day, and a light bulb turned on:
Way too many people on the left dismiss sexism as a non-factor in the elections and what people think about Warren and how her campaign is being treated. A lot of that discussion is about media bias, voters preferences, and that sort of thing. Let me relay a more mundane 'on the ground' experience. When canvassing for candidates, it's not uncommon that a man answers the door and then prohibits you from speaking with his wife. The husbands bark, "no you can't talk to her, we are voting Republican." In our Year of the Lord 2020, millions of women can't *privately discuss* what they think or which candidate they like because their husbands or bosses won't let them. From the door knocking to the media coverage, sexism impacts everything about politics. Hell, at least two dozen serial rapists at ABC, CNN, FOX, and CBS largely controlled media coverage of 2016. You think that didn't impact how Hillary was covered?!? And yes, sexism even effects polling because many women are frightened to reveal their thoughts with their husbands listening.
The women in my family don't talk as much about politics as the men, and the men seem far more conservative overall. Maybe there's a lane where I could get a couple to flip.

This is very real, unfortunately. I had a friend that grew up with in San Diego come back to visit. She lives in Illinois now and I asked who she was voting for. She agreed with just about everything I said but she said she can’t tell anyone (including her husband) how she votes. Her town is so small she will get looks at the grocery store, won’t be invited to social events, her kids will lose play dates etc. so she tries not to pay attention to what’s going on for fear of being ousted. It’s pretty fucked up

To be fair this sounds like what could happen to someone that was openly MAGA in San Diego.

I got the same feeling when I did that Ft. Worth Texas NASCAR event, driving carts around. Not saying politics came up often, but the curiosity of some that I was driving carts coming out of NY lent to some social commentary. And it seemed clear that some of the women picked up reacted differently/asked different questions when with husbands.
Sounds drunk. I also love his insecurity that makes him point out that he was "climbing volcanoes in Ecuador". He sounds like Sam Kinnison but drunk and not yelling.

CNN destroying their reputation can take a breather now that MSNBC and Joy Reid brought on a very biased, conspiracy theory anti-vaxxer "body language expert" to confirm that Bernie was lying.
What the fuck.
I always readily admitted that CNN and MSNBC tended to be more biased to the left but never as extreme bas Fox news is to the right. Now all I see are two networks that are frightened of Bernie being the nominee and possibly president. It's crazy.
They're corporate and terrible and they're probably better than Fox News but perhaps only in their relative subtlety, so in a way what they're doing is more insidious.

Maddow literally just had Lev Parnas on to share every bit of dirt he has on Trump. MSNBC certainly has their problems but come on, man.

She makes 7 million dollars a year appeasing liberals who hate Trump by doing stuff like that that amounts to nothing. Good for her fighting the good fight, I guess.

I'm mad/frustrated at MSNBC and CNN as well but I prefer her having him on and revealing all this info if the other option is to not do that at all and only focus on democrat infighting

I'm not sure. The way they cover politics it's less than useful either way. If they were going to talk about policy and what was good for the country, what the political realities are for most people, etc.. well, I would like that more. If they're going to ask whether Bernie Sanders is a sexist or whether Amy Klobuchar is secretly the most electable candidate in the field, then yeah, I agree with you.
