I am headed in from D.C. I plan on buying most of my gear here before I head out to Manchester. I was curious however when to expect the gas lines and grocery store lines to get out of control. I want to get my last fill up far enough out that im not waiting in long lines but i also dont want to run out of gas when i am waiting in line.
I have been told that the Walmart in Manchester is a popular place to go and get beer and food and what not but i also heard they sold out of a lot of stuff. I pretty much just plan on buying beer and a little food when i get to TN. I am also leaving DC on Wednesday night which will put me in TN when a heck of a lot of people will be getting there. ps. any DC people have thier route planned yet?

The best advice is to bring it all with you if at all possible. Wal-Mart was a ZOO last year. All weekend. Plus, it sounds like you're going to get there just about in time to get in line. Don't waste your edge screwing around with groceries.
Gas is a crapshoot. I remember there were places around, but not exactly where.
i cant really make a suggestion as to when to fill up before the lines get too long and still be able to make it to your camp site. in the past we have stopped at the first exit after the traffic jam begins. the lines werent really all that bad...gave you a chance to stretch your legs. just make sure you will have enought gas to make it out afterwards and to the next gas station!

the gas was a worry...we wasn't sure how long we'd be in line and didn't know how far up the next gas station was...when you get 30-45 minutes outside your destination, go ahead and fill up to be safe...depending on your arrival, you may be in line for awhile...
then go to the first reststop once you're in line to refill again.. walmart wasn't that bad when i went, you'll just have to wait in a longer cashier line.
I don't like the idea of having a few gallons of gas in the vehicle, regardless of how well sealed & stable the container is. At the same time, I'd like to have it there, just in case...can anyone offer a little insight on this?
There are pleanty of gas stations around 20-30 minutes outside of Manchester. Just fill up your car there and you should be good to go in the line getting in (and getting out if there is one). Last year we filled up our car and sat in the line for about 8 hours and still had pleanty of gas to last us. We didn't even need to fill up again until after we passed through Nashville.
