I can’t wait for it to magically disappear now that awards season is over. Call my cynical, but it always felt like someone putting on the “I sunk myself so deeply in this role shtick”. All for the most imitated accent in history in a shit movie. Good riddance.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 6/8 and maybe 6/9 - Governors Ball 8/17 - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Forest Hills 9/4 - Pearl Jam @ MSG 9/7 - Pearl Jam @ Wells Fargo Center 9/11 - St. Vincent @ Brooklyn Paramount 9/19 - Stars @ Music Hall of Williamsburg 9/20 - Khruangbin @ Forest Hills
did they not include charlbi dean in the in memoriam section or did i somehow miss it?
They let you scan a qr code for the rest of the dead people they didnt care about. Ray Liotta got a movie shot with his photo but PAUL FUCKING SORVINO didnt even get into the main sequence.
It came down to them trying to cutting down time and thats an area where you really should not attempt to do that.

of course they're not going to fit everyone in, but it's especially weird to not include a main actress from a current best picture nominee.
Tár, The Fabelmans, and Banshees all were completely shut out. Interesting because those three seemed most suited to Oscar's modern tastes. I think it signifies a shift going on in the Academy. The era of Weinstein oscar bait is over, the era of A24 has begun.

Tár and Banshees couldve easily been A24 films. Also, A24’s been winning Oscars since 2016, including a best picture win in 2017.
I'm biased towards awards ceremonies, and always feel like hosts and the ceremonies themselves always catch way too much shit from the press. It's always "the ceremony is too long!" but then they cut some awards from the ceremony and it's "we want the ceremony to have all of the awards!". And they should have all of the awards! It's important to highlight cinematography, sound, costume, makeup, editing, etc. But you can't have all of those awards and not also have a very very long stretch in the middle of the ceremony where there are loads of not-famous and often not-charismatic people on stage giving speeches.
Or "the host sucked she/he didn't have me laughing to the point of absolute mania every time they were on stage!" when in reality there have only been like, two really great awards show hosts in the almost 100 year history of awards shows (it's a really hard job). etc etc.
Anyway, having criticized the critics i have my own criticisms lol. But I think more positive choices were made last night than negative choices.
1. Jimmy Kimmel was perfectly fine as a host. His opening monologue was funny and had just a touch of that Gervais energy without going full Gervais.
2. Having said that, I'm glad that they didn't use Jimmy a ton. There is really no need to shove the host out there between every award to crack a few jokes. I think he had the monologue and maybe one more segment? That's really all you need. As previously stated the show is going to be long, no need to make it longer by inserting the host into even more situations.
3. I think it was good they didn't have any "sketches". Although I've certainly had some laughs at certain sketches at the Emmys or Oscars in the past, they tend to mostly fall flat and again, just add time to an already long awards show. Combined with #2 above, not every award show can be hosted by Amy and Tina, seasoned and incredibly talented sketch performers who are the greatest award show hosts of all time. I'm glad to see the Oscars recognizing that.
4. I particular enjoyed the Jordan/Majors segment, cool to see big time stars up there nerding out about movie making minutiae.
Mild criticisms:
1. Weird I'm saying this because I did enjoy some of this years' musical performances, but I think it most years we'd be fine to not have the musical performances. The Oscars is about movies, not music, and usually the songs from movies are not great songs. Big exception this year for RRR, that was great, and it was really fun seeing Hsu and Byrne up there being weird, even if that EEAAO song is barely anything (sorry david byrne).
2. We're showing a trailer for The Little Mermaid in the middle of the Oscars?
3. We're showing an ad for Warner Bros in the middle of the Oscars?
As for the actual awards I'm generally happy to see EEAAO bulldoze it's way through awards season. I loved that movie and everyone in it. I would've loved to have seen Austin Butler get crowned as the new young king of hollywood but how can you hate Brendan Fraser winning an Oscar? Butler will get another shot later. The one thing I kind of hated was seeing All Quiet sweep a bunch of the under-the-line categories, leaving zero love for Elvis, Tar, Banshees, etc. I was pleased to see Black Panther win though.
Overall it's been a very fun movie awards season, I was entertained by the ceremony and while you can't get everything you want, I'm generally happy with the results.

Agreed, postjack. At this point I hope the Academy knows anyone who watches these things want SOME entertainment but mostly want to know who's gonna win. There's no need for sketches for the middle America viewer who's not watching it in the first place.
Kimmel did fine. Some cringe bits. The bits over the Slap and Cocaine Bear were milked, but agreed that he mostly just stayed out the way. It was a very basic ceremony. Best pic montage -> two awards -> original song performance/ in memorium/ awkward ad.
Agreed that the ad for The Little Mermaid was a little uncomfortable. It very much was Disney reminding everyone in the room that they run that town. The WB ad felt even more awkward. Like "sorry for fucking all you guys over two years ago but man remember how cool we used to be? Please don't hate us."
Was it just the shitty compression, or did the CGI for the Little Mermaid look horrible? This is gonna look so much worse following Avatar.
I felt bad for thinking it, but I agree. It’s the shehulk thing - you can get away with all CGI sorta but once you have real people in it, too, it looks like shit

How the hell do the Memoriums even work? Do people campaign to have their loved ones included? It’s the only reason I can think of to why they’d include this random set decorater over someone who made national headlines with their passing. No knock on those included but it seems like such an easy job to include major actors when it’s all over the news. LIKE ANNE HECHE.
When the actress from Triangle of Sadness passed, it was huge news with how buzz worthy the film was and their age. Hell, you could just Google ‘actors that passed in 2022’ and it’ll include everyone you need.

There are always these little moments that remind you that, while the Academy Awards are a TV event for movie fans, they're also an in-person industry event for industry people - seeing, like, PR reps show up in the In Memoriam montage, or trotting out whoever that exec was paired with Eva Longoria (I've already forgotten her name, but she is definitely in charge of the Academy and probably a member of the Illuminati) to make a little speech about stuff about which the at-home audience couldn't care less.

I thought the Disney and WB things were fine, both celebrating 100 yrs, two most important companies in the industry. MGM hits 100 next year I'm sure they'll have a piece too.
