Basically give me 5 bookings you think were really smart from Roo’s perspective, 5 you think are stupid/pointless, and 5 bookings that should’ve been a slam dunk but Roo missed out on somehow. Mine below:
Smart: Lil Nas X- I’m all in on his live show being revamped, upgraded, and being an incredible spectacle for what’s his biggest US festival appearance to date
My Morning Jacket- this one is a layup, easiest re-booking from the sold out 2021 cancelation. Also one of the few bones thrown to the longtime attendee base
Alex G- think this is terrific undercard value for such a critically acclaimed indie darling
Charley Crockett- think he can definitely follow the Zach Bryan trajectory to where this looks like really shrewd booking in a couple years
Paramore- have you heard Pop Punk is having a moment? Maybe the smartest booking Roo made, this new album is going to rip the What to shreds
Dumb: Louis The Child- such an uninspired choice for one of the biggest EDM names on the lineup. This year’s Illenium
Portugal. the Man- have they released any music since their 2017 set? I could be fooled
Rebelution- who asked for this??
Odesza- I’m sure it’ll be a good show, but can’t help but feel like they’ll be the weakest headliner playing any of the big 4 US fests once ACL and Lolla drop
Emo Nite- is this just glorified karaoke? We already have the superjam for that
Missed: Miley Cyrus-total bottlejob by Roo to not make this happen. Her presence on Friday or Saturday makes this lineup look so much better
Flaming Lips-Yoshimi anniversary show had Roo written all over it. Oh well
Boygenius-I assume Coachella got an exclusivity clause or something, but would’ve been a hell of a coup for Roo
Orville Peck-more of a personal one but he was on both 2020 and 2021 canceled lineups, released a superior sophomore album, and would kill on the farm IMO
Dead & Co-Roo probably never had a shot but this one’s just a real shame
So in my mind I know Louis The Child sucks but I listened to a little bit of his newest record "Black Marble" and it's pretty good. If he is playing that kind of music I'm down.

yeah his latest album is by far the best he's put out. it's actually quite good (and a lot of his other stuff just really isn't haha). but it is unclear how much of that will show up in his set.

Smartest - I'm going to take out headliners because I had all 3 included.
1. Griz - safety first when you are desperate to sell 2. MMJ - Think this probably reminded a good amount of people about how they felt going into the 21 fest. 3. Tyler Childers - Helps with relevance 4. Lil Nas X - Helps with relevance 5. Three 6 Mafia - Setting aside my real fandom for them, there should be more nostalgia acts that could help make bonnaroo a little weird and that kinda make you excited to tell normies about the lineup.
Dumbest
1. Revivalists 2. Noah Kahan 3. Marcus Mumford 4. Sylvan Esso 5. Girl in Red
^ I don't think any of these acts helped sell tickets even though the shows will be well attended by people that bought tickets for other reasons.
Misses
1. Miley Cyrus - I do think this would have hyped up Roo's base big time. At least the reddit crowd 2. Charli XCX 3. Pusha T - Could have used 1 or 2 more great hip hop acts. Or just one on Sunday. This seems like it would have been easy. 4. Queens of the Stone Age - If they could have pulled this off like Boston Calling, I think it would have sent quite a few more of the Foo fans over the top. 5. Tame Impala - If they would have still be willing to do a #2 on their day spot this is a big one.

i'll admit i'd never heard of Girl In Red before the lineup drop, but she has ~13,500,000 monthly listeners on spotify. tyler childers, who i agree is a good booking, has a little more than half that.
will do my list soon but first just need to tell Jake Jortles that Girl In Red will absolutely be helping sell tickets to Gen Z attendees. not a huge fan of hers, but she has some DEVOTED FANS.

Dumbest -The Revivalists: just a huge waste of a top 12 slot on a boring band long past their peak relevance. Marcus Mumford to a lesser extent too, but at least there's a lot of other options on Sunday. -Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness when Something Corporate is doing shows later in the year -GRiZ: so much more interesting electronic music that hasn't been on the Farm recently. Just way to save an unexciting a booking. -Baby Keem as 2 on his day. Sure it'll be a fun show, but feels like a reach/Kendrick using his influence. Put a sub people were asking for like Miley Cyrus there and this lineup would look a lot better. Having a strong 2 each day would've also made Odesza being top 3 a lot less weak (which I get that debate is super played out at this point, but it still feels very weak and uninspired to me). -Rainbow Kitten Surprise: just one of the weaker options of popular indie bands from that era. If we are going that direction, at least give us a band who put on a super fun live show like Grouplove or Passion Pit.
Missed -Charli XCX: long overdue late night dance party -Big Thief: feel like a perfect booking I don't get why they've never played -IDLES, PUP, Mannequin Pussy, Soul Glo, Viagra Boys, or Jeff Rosenstock: They all fit the vibe really well as socially conscious punk bands. Would've complimented Paramore well. -Magdalena Bay: I mean this is perfect festival music and it's shocking to me that aren't everyone this year. -Turnstile: would be a wild show and it's a shame they are wasting so much of their Glow On cycle opening for Blink Some others that would've made a lot of sense: Yves Tumor, Ethel Cain, Wednesday, Wet Leg, Weyes Blood, JPEGMafia, Alvvays, good electronic music

Fleet Foxes is just long over due to play the farm. They have never played Bonnaroo.
-Kendrick Lamar: as far as rap bookings go, you cant really get better in 2023 -Baby Keem: One of the hottest up-and-coming names in rap at the moment. Puts on a headliner-level performance for the cost of a sub. Reminds me of Travis Scott 2017 -Vulfpeck: Cant really get a more roo-ready band than Vulf. They were overdue for a farm appearance and will be leading the good vibes train. -Korn: What a great surprise. Bring some rock to the fest and this band is perfect as some ppl will go as a joke, some will go for real but everyone will walk away happy. -Destroy Lonely: Ive always roasted Roo for their rap bookings, but as far as underground names go at the moment this is a great selection for the kids. Young, fresh on the scene, up-and-coming and he brings that Carti energy for a fraction of the cost.
Dumb: -Yung Gravy: -Big Wild: Id be shocked if anyone in the Big Wild crowd this year hadnt already seen this dude 2+ times before. He plays everything every year and he’s hardly moved up on lineup placement. Fest fodder -Louis the Child: Im surprised they accepted such a low billing, but this is the same as above. They arent getting any bigger at this rate so why waste the money -Marcus Mumford: Just seems like a wasted slot. Is anyone such a big Mumford fan that theyre dying to go see the one guy alone? -Ken Carson: If we have Lone I dont really see what hes bringing to the table thats any different, though they were likely a package deal so Im not gonna complain too much abt this one.
Missed -Deadmau5 / Testpilot -Earth Wind and Fire -Turnstile -Lil Uzi Vert -Wet Leg
1. Three 6 Mafia: did not expect this one but i know it's gonna be a party. may not draw tickets really but this is the fun, unexpected bookings i love to see from Roo 2. Alex G: received some more love this year but still feel like he's underappreciated. gonna be a great set on the farm 3. Black Midi: they just fucking rock idk what else to say 4. 070 Shake: this is such a killer Thursday booking 5. MMJ: optimistic that they'll be able to recreate the magic of their past Roo sets
Dumb
1. Marcus Mumford: i mean we really do not need more Mumford anywhere at this point 2. LTC: love them but it's pretty lazy unless they continue in the direction of Black Marble and throw down a set like that 3. PTM: really hope a new album comes out and Roo knew it was coming because otherwise this is just unnecessary 4. The Revivalists: idk just lazy 5. Kip Moore: haven't even looked at him much but the name alone tells me this is prob some bad country

alex g is by far my favorite newly discovered artist thanks to this lineup. I had no idea they made music like this.
I listened to the Louis The Child Black Marble set from Burning Man on Youtube and it's a hell of a lot better than I expected. Hoping if it isn't their main set, maybe they do it at WiTW LN Thursday or something

Smart: 1 - My Morning Jacket: This is obvious. 2 - Tyler Childers - Actively touring, huge fan base/ticket draw, only other appearance in 2018. 3 - Fleet Foxes - Newer album/limited tour last year, haven't played Roo before. 4 - Umphrey's McGee - 25th anniversary tour this year, lots of history with Roo. 5 - Foo Fighters - haven't played Roo before, from the lost 2021 lineup.
Dumb: 1 - AFI - why? 2 - Korn - can we just get King Gizzard instead? 3 - Lil Nas X - know nothing about him other than the terrible SNL performance I saw. 4 - Emo Nite - is this a band? 5 - Diesel - why?
Missed: 1 - Flaming Lips playing Yoshimi - 20th anniversary of iconic album, playing it at Shaky Knees/Boston Calling, haven't been at Roo since 14 2 - Tame Impala - Missed headliner from 2020/2021 - make it happen 3 - Oysterhead/Primus/Les Clay's Bridgade - maybe a little Les superjam? Sounds perfect 4 - Shaky Knees crossovers: Mars Volta, Father John Misty, Pond, Black Angels - would've been nice to have a few of these 5 - Miley Cyrus - seems like a fun headeliner, I'll get on the bandwagon here.
Smart: 1 - Paramore (figured she’d be back but I’m happy she is because they alone will bring in a lot of people) 2 - JID (released an amazing album, amazing live and will only get better as an artist) 3 - Remi Wolf (surprised is not an even bigger pop star already) 4 - Daily Bread (will be a huge EDM name soon) 5 - Jacob Collier (cool booking, don’t really listen to him, but he is a musical prodigy, can play like every instrument, has perfect pitch, and hopefully will have a good crowd there that can sing back and will do crowd interaction songs)
Dumb: 1 - Yung Gravy (I like the bra thing he did, but I hear he’s awful live and it’s just a lame booking like Lil Dicky but somehow way worse) 2 - The Revivalist (way to high billed for a band that really wasn’t that good live when I saw them, they have to be having a new album out of something) 3 - Sheryl Crow (love her but she just played, happy for people who missed her last time, but I’ll be somewhere else) 4 - Marcus Mumford (okay I wasn’t gonna put him because I think it is smart they booked him because he’s a huge name that doesn’t have him be a headliner, but dumb because it still takes up a high spot when there’s a lot better that we could get) 5 - AFI (I literally laugh every time I see their name and on the lineup, it’s just so funny to me. I really only knew Miss Murder and like one other song maybe, but this booking is even more out of place than Korn, to me at least. I honestly haven’t heard anyone say anything about them being excited to see them. If nothing else is going on I guess I’ll check out just for nostalgia sake but probably not.)

Wanting Gizz and their 27 albums instead of the throwback gold that is Korn 🤡
I mean if I’m honest I absolutely would take another Gizz set over Korn honestly. A different setlist, an acoustic set, a marathon set, or anything would be way cooler than Korn to me personally. But I think Korn is still a cool and interesting booking.
