Didn't Joan Baez have negative comments about the state of the festival the last time she played? We've had 15 years of good festivals since then and now she's gonna return for this shit show...
“I imagine it was the same for the Newport Folk Festival. You could have gone there to celebrate your 60th anniversary.”
“It changed so drastically that it wasn’t even the pretense of trying to be what it was at the beginning. It was new acts … I think nobody was pretending. I remember going back at one point and the Indigo Girls were there. Well, that’s a whole new world.”
Well that explains her absence on this farewell tour that is ending on 7/28 in Spain...

Never heard of or listened to this band. But 2 songs deep and they sound very similar to Beach Boys.

I’m just gonna copy and paste a thing I posted on Reddit. Not tryna pick a fight, just clearing my throat.
I’ve been doing my best to keep my mouth shut. Individuals can absolutely complain, and I came to the fest from the west coast a few times so I absolutely feel those who have flights+hotels and can’t “just give their tickets to the waitlist.”
But the collective nature of the internet is a tricky thing. I think there’s always some negativity around the middle of announcements, but this year it feels like a tidal wave. I’ve gone on and off since 09, been casually on the forums about it since 14, and I haven’t seen people this down on the fest this consistently before.
And for someone like me, who is waiting for tickets and would love to go and sit by the water and listen to music at my favorite place almost no matter the lineup, its tough to see people doing nothing but complain but not see any waitlist movement yet.
There’s lots of good on this lineup—Adrianne Lenker, Orville Peck, Wednesday, Killer Mike, etc. I don’t think we have any headliner announcements yet. It’s always a wait and see thing, and the back and forth is fun—negativity included. It just seems collectively like a bit much this year.

I think your point is valid and I get where you are coming from. I think we just have a battle of circumstances. For your circumstance, if I understand you correctly, you wish that people could be happy for what they have,as you, as of now, don’t have the thing you want and people that do have it are complaining. I understand why that’s frustrating.
The other circumstance is people, like me, who have thousands of dollars in flights, lodging and car rentals, are, as of now, underwhelmed with the bookings like Elle King, and many other underwhelming acts booked that feel like a head scratcher. This is my first after trying, and failed 3 different times, with work getting in the way, being shut out on tickets, etc. l. I’ve been very excited, but the last 25 have been underwhelming for my, and many others taste. Part of the problem, as we know, is the long drawn out way this is announced which creates anticipation multiple days a week, only to find out if someone you enjoy has been announced, and instead it’s Steve Poltz.
I hope you get a ticket and have a great time, I might suggest avoiding this thread if it’s creating a negative experience for you. I mean that sincerely, not in a condescending way. I think both points of view are valid. As a buyer and someone committing this much money into it, there are standards. In the other hand, anyone wanting to go who would make the most of it, but gets shut out and listened to people bitch is validated in being annoyed and frustrated.

Yeah, new album comes out Friday. Their last album, Everything Harmony was a top 5 album for me last year.

Yeah I think your point about avoiding the thread is a fair one and I’ve been on here less and posted less than in years past. It’s a weird parasocial thing here—I don’t know anyone but I’ve been looking at this and occasionally posting for ten years now (Jesus.) I definitely don’t want to be the “just sell your tickets!!” Guy. I want all my fake internet acquaintances to be able to go and have a nice time again lol.

Lol I get it. Ultimately I’m sure I’ll have a good time, and I have hope for a couple bangers in the end. Realistically I have 5 I’m pumped about and probably most of us do (except maybe beaker). I hope you make it in my dude, and ignore us sour pusses. We’re just passionate internet fucks.

Man, if she thought the Indigo Girls were out there, she's really gonna hate Friko and The Dropkick Murphys.

I have 9 at the moment that I’m interested in.
I have 16 I'd be excited to see and well over half of the rest of them I'd be happy to see.

5 I’d pay to see. (2 of these I wouldn’t have paid for before their lineup announcements.)
13 I’m actively hoping to check out.
Festival lineups are weird - and any opinions on them are going to be largely subjective but partially objective. Jay gets paid the big bucks to book us great lineups - I think he’s delivered every year since he took over. But does that mean the pre-Jay 2007 lineup wasn’t as good? Maybe. Some of us would enjoy the heck out of it - but I think the fever level excitement might have been subdued from where it has been the last 10 years for this festival. Of course it wasn't selling out at that time. So where does this year’s lineup fall comparatively? If I put other lineups over it, it doesn’t mean the 2024 lineup isn’t bad… it’s just all relative (and from my own subjective tastes)

I’m happy with that. I miss my approach to the festival from 2010-2015 . It was always stoked and just soaked up what I could. Discovered so many good bands I never would have known. I just moved back to the east coast from Hawaii and the festival was a huge bright spot. It’s on me to keep that spirit alive.
