The idea is to vote for the LEAST EGREGIOUS win, so by the last round we'll have the worst best picture decision the Academy ever made.
You aren't saying the Best Picture winner is a bad movie, necessarily, just that the other nominees were more deserving of the win.
You are voting based on the win over ALL other nominees. I only included certain losing nominees as an example of the egregiousness, and so you didn't have to go to wikipedia to remember what the winner beat out. For example, if you vote for The Artist, you are saying it is terrible that The Artist won over all other nominees, not just over Moneyball.
The years are based on the wikipedia list, which i think is roughly the year of the film's release. So if you google "1994 oscar best picture", you might get what I have as 1993 above. I'd prefer wikipedia use the year of the ceremony, but i just used what they had to make referencing easier.
I want to give a special shout out to an option I did not include: 2007. No Country For Old Men beat out Michael Clayton and There Will Be Blood. All three of those are awesome and a good argument could be made for any of of those winning, so I didn't include it as an option. What a great year for movies!

surprised The English Patient has made it this far. I thought there were more Fargo fans here. might have said this in another one of these threads but one of my unpopular movie opinions is Fargo never really did much for me. watched it as a teenager and again several years ago. it's not bad at all, i just don't see what makes it so great.

I think at this point none of these deserved to win. You could make a case for any of these.
I think with Green Book it just didn't compete in a great year compared to some of the years that remain. Not truly fair as all of the films remaining are 18 years old or older. Fargo, Goodfellas, Saving Private Ryan, and Brokeback Mountain are widely seen as classics that have stood the test of time compared to Blackkklansman and Black Panther, which are only 5 years old and haven't really aged yet.

this is it. at this point the remaining losers are all bona fide examples of classics of their genre or the director's discography, OR have some sort of classic actor performance. blackKKlansmen and black panther are both very good movies, but not straight up classics (at least not yet, as you note the remaining options benefit from age).

Curious how many people have actually seen The English Patient. I feel like no one has talked about that movie since the 90s.
I saw it in the theater on a date. We went cause of the Oscar buzz. Never watched it again. Really don’t remember enough to have an informed opinion but it leaving no impression says a lot to me at least.
I didn’t think it was bad I don’t guess. Just whatever.

You didn’t hear my English Patient story? Well strap in and let me tall ya. I HATE that movie. Hated it the first time I saw it. Then I was on a flight from hell to Amsterdam, with half the toilets not working, lots of turbulence, and seated between two screaming babies. And then the movie they showed (back when there were no choices) was you guessed it, The English Patient.
