I seem to be having a problem with my computer. Every time I open a page, I get a message saying that I probably have some virus and asking me to download some spyware software. (I just close it out without clicking on anything in the message). Also, I can get to web pages from my favorites list, but when I use the google toolbar, I get a message on the google page saying that my settings have been altered using spyware. And if I open a link, it starts saying it is scanning my computer. (So, I just closed the page). I ran Spybot and Adaware, but they don't seem to have fixed this. Now I am running a virus scan, but it doesn't say it has found anything. Can anybody tell me how to get it to stop doing this?
If you have done both of those...then it might be something similar to what happened to me once....
I loaded some web toolbar that came with some shareware/freeware program I wanted (I had no choice, I had to load it to get the freeware) and everytime I loaded a webpage that used that toolbar (can't remember, it was some search engine...google? yahoo? or some off brand maybe...) which was prob EVERY web page... it included some ad for some spyware removal software package that acted like it had found something and wanted me to run it to remove it .....it was an ad trying to get me to use/buy the spyware package.... Ended up having to remove the toolbar (and shareware) to get RID of the ad for spyware removal cause it was driving me crazier than HAVING spyware
Could it be something like that maybe? Cause if your .dat file for virus scan is up to date and spybot and adaware didn't find it I wouldn't think it would be a real deal....tho it COULD be.....try running task manager and seeing if there is any service running that is taking up a lot of CPU usage that has a funny name or looks suspicious....that's what I do....and I look in the registry too but I kinda know what suspicous software keys look like since I used to write them...real ones not malicious one that is....
^^^That sounded promising, but it doesn't seem to have fixed it either. I disabled all of the toolbars that I had on there. (Is there a way to take them completely off? Maybe I need to do that?) It is still doing it. I can use Yahoo, but I can't use Google. And I still get the popup telling me to download software.
I also checked the task manager. The only thing running is Inforoo.

I second the Firefox browser. It blocks a lot of these web shenanigans.
That said, if all else fails, you might try sending a note to the spyware company advertising the 'fix' and ask them how to disable their crap. There's been some recent heat on this kind of 'extortion' advertising lately.
Other than that, if you can give us the name of the spyware software, we might be able to track down a 'fix'.
I had a similar problem once where a spyware site opened everytime I went anywhere (ironically saying I needed to load their software to stop people like them). Since it was an external site, I finally had to go to my Norton and manually block that site so everytime it tried to pop up it was blocked. It worked for me.
Log Lady, I had to be the bearer of bad news.. but if you've tried all of the above, something is rooted deeply in your system. It IS possible to remove such deeprooted spyware but usually requires editing your registry and you would need to know exactly what to look for.
I hate to say it, but at this point I would freshly install Windoze

^^^Yeah, I was afraid I was going to hear something like this. Of course, I have no idea where my Windows disc(s?) is/are (we moved since I got the computer, and there is a pretty good chance the discs didn't make it with us).
We've been thinking about getting a desktop anyway (mainly because I'm a big dork, and I want to play Heroes, which I can't do on the desktop). Maybe this is a sign that it is time. Any suggestions?
Also, should I be worried about using my computer for now? Like, should I avoid getting online from it or anything? (I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to computers.)
