Imagine one person trying to tell a story to 10,000 people one at a time. It'd either take forever or it'd take a megaphone. A megaphone could be compared to a lot of bandwidth. Well, now imagine that instead of telling 10,000 people the whole story(without a megaphone), the teller told each person one sentence, and then instructed them to share what they'd heard with everyone else. From this point on, the only way the teller would tell someone something is if no one else in the audience knew a particular sentence. After a while, a few more members of the audience would know the whole story, etc.
The teller is a seeder The audience are leechers the story is a file
Someone will send you a ".torrent" file, and you open it to begin downloading. Use a program like Azureus or Utorrent.

^^ Mirrored. Never got into oink but just read up on it today and it sounded outright amazing. I've been using slsk for some time, and piratebay, demonoid and karagarga, so I think I fit in relatively well in the stmusic community also, particularly as i tend to rip eac .flacs, and virtually always go for quality, when available.
Anyway, if you can spare an invite at some time, it would definitely be appreciated. fleur.nomdeguerre USING gmail.com
... I don't need to ask, it'd be too awkward... but... I'm a music fiend who is in withdrawals from oink, and to a lesser extent demoniod... I'm looking to relapse...

^^^Are you clever? That's torrent speak for, are you connectible through your firewall? It's a complicated process of forwarding ports and such, but it's totally worth doing. Check out www.portforward.com for help.
I myself am not clever. It's the one great curse of this new Mac, I haven't been able to figure out the problem. I've started numerous help threads and gotten computer whizzes to take a look, and I'm still stuck. So I feel your pain about the ratio; it's like trying to keep your head above water!

I've already done port forwarding on my router its just that they seed so slowly...when I download from other sites (isohunt in particular) I get like ratios in the 5s and 9s, whereas my ratios from stmusic are all less than 1. What can I do?
haha... I think I finally understand it all but it took forever and A LOT of torrents
yeah... upload a new torrent onto the tracker. Then seed it until you can't seed it anymore. You get an immediate boost as soon as just one person snatches it because you are giving him/her the whole thing. Even a little one can do wonders.
