I live 25 minutes from the beach but don't get there that often. In the summer it's usually packed with tourists and traffic is a bitch. The mountains at least, don't get overrun with people like that. I'll take the beach for water sports and relaxation but give me the mountains for solitude and majesty.

True, but I have NEVER been to a beach that didn't have people on it ( even in Saudi ) whereas I have been on mountains and not seen another living soul for hours.

Puerto Rico, the Friday after Thanksgiving 2005, drive East from San Juan on the coastal highway through Luquillo past the BEACH with all of the parking and the restrooms and concession stands, and the PEOPLE... keep going, until just before the road shifts south and away from the beach, make a left, cruise North down the narrow streets, right up to the edge of the sand, park on the street, get out and enjoy! Seriously, that day, me and my girl got out of the car, and 10 steps later were walking barefoot on the deep golden brown sand, surrounded by palm trees, and, we were the ONLY 2 people there It was a gorgeous perfect clear sunny day in the 80's on the most beautiful stretch of beach I've ever seen, and I grew up surrounded by nice beaches... I was going to post a picture, but i can't find them ... but it was a vast stretch of empty paradise for us and only us that day
*sigh* that was a good day a day full of solitude and majesty,

I want to say the mountains are the best, I really do, but in 1982 I went to the Florida Keys and found paradise. Yes people have been buying it up since then but for peace and tranquility give me a spot on the beach, the sound of the living ocean lapping on the shore, pelicans riding the breeze above me, and well, what can I say?
i've always chosen the mountains over the beach (but here i am living in florida...go figure). they both have their perks, but imho, you can't beat that absolute silence you get high up in the mountains away from cars and people and the blah, blah, blah of daily life.
