A photographic recollection of my hike today. Along with two friends, we hiked up Old Rag Mountain, in Syria, VA. Roughly an 8 mile round trip, we managed to be at the peak of the mountain at sunset, which was a glorious spectacle, as you can see! ;D
Ive lived by the beach and missed the mountains ..I now have been living in the mountains and really miss the beach .. If only i could get the smell of salt water up here ...

^^^I agree, I'm not sure I could choose. My family vacationed at the beach nearly every year since I was a baby, so I have very strong affections for it. However, the mountains are the mountains. Both are powerfully beautiful. I couldn't choose between watching hawks and ravens play on the mountaintops that roll down into lush, neverending valleys, or watching a grand thunderstorm in the dark of night way far away over the ocean, while the sound of crashing waves and the smell of salty sea air overtake you.
I've lived near both and I'd take the mountains over the beach any day. The beach is great and when you can find some solitude it's really amazing. But the mountains are home and just replenish my soul. But that's just me. I was born a hillbilly.
I grew up around that area and I love it still live very close by, hitting the river in the summer is the best. We went out mid october when it was still warm enogh and the leaves where changing, a beautiful vista around each bend.
ive lived in west virginia my whole life, and i can't explain how tedious it gets walking up and down these hills everyday. our campus in morgantown (i go to wvu) is nothing but ups and downs. i get so sick of walking to class every day. but at the end of the day, when i can look outside and see our beautiful mountains and scenery, all i can think of is 'country roads, take me home...'
The only time I've been in the mountains is when I've driven through West Virginia, and the time I stayed at my great-aunt's mountain home for a weekend. Needless to say, I will be returning. There are few things in this world that are as beautiful as the view from a mountain.
Nice pictures, strumntheguitar! If only my camera hadn't been Bonna-stolen....

Glad everyone enjoyed my pictures... I forgot to post one that includes a story. About 3/4 up the mountain we stopped at a rocky plateau that overlooked the valley. We decided to take this spot as a scenic rest spot (much needed rest, might I add...) After about 15 minutes of admiring the view it started to rain lightly which was quite refreshing, but even more inspiring was when my friend who was sitting on the edge overlooking the valley pointed out a rainbow that had formed right infront of our eyes... We literally could see almost the entire rainbow, it was incredible. Unfortunately, my camera isn't nearly good enough to capture the rainbow (or maybe I'm just not a good photographer...) but here's a pic I tried to take of him sitting on the ledge looking at it... It's a good pic nonetheless, I just wish the rainbow had showed up better... You can sort of see it if you look real hard just to the right of him in the picture.
Smokey Mountain memories About my home in Tennesse Yesterday keeps calling me, Calling me home Mountains rising in my soul Higher than the dreams I've known Misty eyed, they cling to me, my Smokey Mountain memories
An old gray man with a dog asleep at his feet Played a worn out fiddle full of melodies, He smiled with his eyes but the lines on his face Told me as much as the tunes he played Talking about my...
Smokey Mountain memories, Pretty girl from Tennessee I was such a fool to leave Leave her all alone Think about her in my dreams, Wonder if she thinks of me I'll always hold her close to me in my Smokey Mountain memories
So mister play your fiddle please, play some mountain melodies, I been down a lonely road to far away from home Nothing left to hold on to, made some plans but they fell through Now there's nothing left for me but my Smokey Mountain memories

Sandhill People
I took away three pictures. One was a white gull forming a half-mile arch from the pines toward Waukegan. One was a whistle in the little sandhills, a bird crying either to the sunset gone or the dusk come. One was three spotted waterbirds, zigzagging, cutting scrolls and jags, writing a bird Sanscrit of wing points, half over the sand, half over the water, a half-love for the sea, a half-love for the land.
I took away three thoughts. One was a thing my people call “love,” a shut-in river hunting the sea, breaking white falls between tall clefs of hill country. One was a thing my people call “silence,” the wind running over the butter faced sand-flowers, running over the sea, and never heard of again. One was a thing my people call “death,” neither a whistle in the little sandhills, nor a bird Sanscrit of wing points, yet a coat all the stars and seas have worn, yet a face the beach wears between sunset and dusk.
Me too. The beach is way to sandy and one youre in the water its like Ok....Im at the beach....Its like a really big pool.....(atleast for me) and then I just wanna get out and go up to my room to avoid either reapplying sunscreen fifty times or a massive, potentially life ending sunburn. YOu can walk on mountains, you can ski on them, you can bike down them you can climb up them. Theyre so damn versatile it hurts.
Sigh...I was born a mountain hillbilly like troo...on Sand Mountain in the foothills of the Appalachians.....but I have been going to the beach at least once every year since I was <1 year old....the gulf coast is my second home literally.....the beach is my "thotful spot" as Pooh would say....it's where I go when I need to clear my head...to listen to the waves crash against the shore...to smell the salt air....to just....be...in the sun....at peace....I will always be a beach baby bum at heart.... It's where I long to escape always.... ;D

That's exactly how I feel about the mountains. The ultimate therapy session

I am totally with ya on this one, strum!
Favourite spot:
Most recent hike:
;D ;D it was sooooooo nice. Especially with all this unseasonably warm weather we're getting here.
I prefer the beach - with warmth, sun, sand and water but I would take either at this point - as long as I could leave the kids behind with someone and just have some time with Boz.

beautiful pics! i lived on the beach until i was nine...then moved to tennessee and was landlocked. thought i was going to die. but over the years i've learned to appreciate hills and mountains much, much more than ocean. i'll take mountains over the beach anytime.
