I remember NYE Y2K, sitting in our "Operations Control Center", ABC's 24-hour coverage up on one of our big-screens, manning the phones and running last minute testing. I'd stayed up all day just to see the new millennium rung in around the world (Hell... it only happens once in a lifetime, right?).
With 10 seconds left on the clock, I remember turning to my senior management team and saying, "gentlemen, whatever happens, it's been a pleasure to work with you all!", and getting a big laugh...
(And for those uber-geeks reading this, yes, I know that 2000 technically wasn't the beginning of the new millennium... )
My wife was the "Change Manager" for Allstate during that time. She basically oversaw any change made to the IT system. So yeah-she was there for all that crap too. But those were the days of nice comp time in IT. Not such anymore.

Early 1999, we merged our IT department with the IT department of our Wall Street division. We'd had all our Y2K paperwork done and filed with the compliance office back in 1998, so when the new people came in, we asked them to send in their documentation as well.
"Oh, it's all tested. Don't worry." "Great... just sent off your doc to Controls & Compliance." "No... you don't get it. It's all tested. We're good." "....Let me guess.... you don't have any documentation or testplan, right?" "Um.... yeah."
We spent the better part of 1999 running around getting them up to spec and documented. The funny part of it was that their management team took leadership of the merged IT team (and have all since been 'retired' out of the company with golden parachutes, thank God).
Hey... it was during the dot.com bubble... they were making more money than our business unit, so they had to be smarter, right?

i have to work new year's eve day, but i get off at 3. I actually was hoping to work the 3-11 shift on new years day (time and a half) but someone else got it instead... sounds like a legitimate reason to just extend my celebrations till the evening of the 1st
I have the distinct pleasure of going to visit my girlfriend's folks in New Orleans over the New Years holiday. Never been to New Orleans so I'm really excited about spending New Year's there. I have no idea what we are going to do on the actual day, but I have faith that my girl will show me a really good time down there.
Anyone going to the Citizen Cope show on NYE here in Philly? I'm thinkin about it. What I don't get is his show 2 days before at the Electric Factory is 25 bucks, and the NYE show is 40 bucks. I guess you're paying extra for the holiday or somethin.

Going to see Umphreys here in Chicago. This will be my 3rd time ringing in the new year with em. Just wish it was at a better venue then the Aragon(crappy acoustics). But they always seem to blow that place up though.............can't wait ;D
