Anyone have any unusual (or usual) holiday traditions?
Such as:
We always have lasagna for Christmas Eve dinner, and we always work a puzzle.
And on Christmas morning, the "kids" are not allowed downstairs until everyone is ready. (I put kids in quotations because I apparently still count as a kid.) This was horrible when I was young because everyone would get up, take showers, and get dressed. With 9-10 of us, it could take awhile, and my uncle's girlfriend took forever because she would go through her whole morning routine (make-up, blow-drying her hair, etc.). Now, there are only 6 of us, and we just get up and do Christmas in pajamas.
The traditions didn't hold into adulthood but as a kid we'd always open all our gifts on Xmas Eve. We did this because my G'ma came from ranching stock. Xmas morning was out of the question for cow people because cows need attention in the morning. After ranch duties they'd all come in to the ranch house and have a blow-out breakfast and see what Santa brought. We weren't ranchers but that's how we did it.
We always used to have BBQ on Christmas Eve that is sent to us from Evansville, Indiana when my granddad was alive - but that tradition is no more
Now we have sandwiches on Christmas Eve, open presents - youngest to oldest - taking turns and then go to candlelight services
Santa Claus on Christmas morning - then we head over to my mom & dad's for a traditional English feast with Prime Rib, Yorkshire Pudding with plum pudding and hard sauce for desseert
We also opened our presents on Christmas eve (sort of). As Catholics we'd go to midnight Mass and then open presents at about 1:30 am. If we didn't go to Mass, we'd still open presents about midnight.
Now my wife is a nurse and we have no kids so she volunteers to work Christmas Eve and Christmas so nurses with kids can be home. We open presents the first day she has off after Christmas.
My only real Christmas tradition now is lots of corn.

I grew up the same way .. We would open our gifts at midnight.. i would then of course stay up till about 6am playing with stuff, then nap and all my friends would get together and hit the movies after X - mas dinner ..

We ALWAYS have lasagna on Christmas Eve... not even homemade, just the frozen kind!
Whoa I just re-read the first post.... only saw the puzzle bit at first when I skimmed it, lol, too funny! Maybe I should work on adding the puzzle idea this year, it sounds like a good one! ;D
We cut a fresh tree each year and I cut 3/4" piece off the bottom. I mark it with the year, let it dry out for a year and then put a picture of that tree on the front of it. I put a few coats of varnish on it and there you have it, a Christmas tree decoration. So I have a piece of all the trees I've cut down since 1991 decorating this years tree. You have to dry it out or the picture you put on it will wrinkle up. ;D
^^^ What a great idea!!! We hardly do any decorating for Christmas but that makes me want to start getting fresh Christmas trees so that we can do that!

My wife and I watch all of the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy. Since they each came out near Christmas, they just feel like the thing to do. We finished "Return of the King" last night. Great film.

let's see... getting altered on corn and merrywine on xmas eve, staying up too late wrapping presents and hiding them under the tree, then *gasP* eating all of santa's cookies!!
my family likes to do this great thing i like to call "the great, drunken free-for-all argument" followed shortly thereafter by the "grown-ups" going to sleep early and the "kids" going to the one bar in town that stays open on christmas

This was the second year in a row that I made fresh egg nog. I always have to admit up front that it's a Martha Stewart recipe... but when people realize there are 3 cups of bourbon, 2 cups of dark rum and 1/2 cup of cognac in it, they shut up and start drinking. ;D
