Well I actually just came here to start a thread about Sweeney Todd because it is a great movie! I saw it last night! Wonderful, wonderful. Go see it asap!!
"Tell me, is it good? Sir, it's too good at least. It's mighty entertainment that makes you feel sorry for the poor saps in the next theater at the multiplex."
but yeah, I haven't seen the play but I'm pretty sure whoever wrote that was consulted throughout the production and approved all the cuts that were necessary to get the movie down to two hours.
I saw the play about 10 years ago at a local theater and it was fantastic. It's coming back this year as a broadway tour and I will definitely see it again.

Those songs are mighty catchy! I got weird looks as I walked out of the theater singing them to myself while motioning the blades with my hands... Apparently I was being creepy according to my friends.

It's really bloody... As in, beyond necessary bloody. I'd compare it to the likes of Kill Bill. It's actually slightly humorous to me, only because it's so over exaggerated... I say as long as you aren't the super sensitive type and aren't completely appalled by the thought of blood and gore it wouldn't be a problem.
I know a few people who would've needed a gag bag for it, but they know not to go anywhere near a movie rated R for violence and gore.

Good! My boy was skeptical about it being a musical and all, but I think the Kill Bill-esque gore might help change his mind! ;D

^^Personally, I cannot stand musicals in theaters (yeah, I know... lame right?) Maybe I haven't seen the right ones, but I've seen a few here and there and never could quite get into them.
But while seeing this movie, I absolutely loved the fact that they sang all the time! I actually preferred the singing over the simple dialog inbetween. So, tell the boy not to worry. If he likes Depp, and likes blood and gore, he's gonna LOVE this movie I have a feeling.

There's a hole in the world like a great black pit and it's filled with people who are filled with shit, And the vermin of the world inhabit it! IT'S LONDON!

I haven't seen I Am Legend... but Will Smith tends to make me hate life, so I would not want to see him on a date.
Johnny Depp, however.... I thoroughly enjoy his acting, and with some corn this can be a highly entertaining film, as long as neither of you get queezy over the site of an abundance of fake blood
i found the intentionally dramatical fakeness of the blood rather comical, its able to make you laugh while someones actually having there neck sliced :/.........but hey thats hollywood for ya ;D

okay...my feelings on the film:
i was really anxious to see this movie and over all i was fairly pleased. i hate to compare it to across the universe but it is similiar. both films are contemporary, trendy musicals. but this movie is about 1000 times better than across the universe.
added bonus: the throat slitting totally gives it the awesomeness of some low budget horror flick...sweeet.
and of course johnny depp can sing. he is an extrordinary actor and extraordinary actors are complete entertainers. they can sing, they can dance, hell they can even impersonate keith richards.
and like johnny depp, anything sasha baron coehn touches turns to gold.
