Insanely awesome movie.
I was surprised at how blackly funny the movie could be at times. I espescially enjoyed Eli's outlandish sermons, complete with the physical removal of the "demons" from people's bodies.
Daniel Day Lewis is phenomenal. Any other actor, and I would've written the character off as a soulless villain. It's incredible the way he makes you sympathize with a man so despicable.
The cinematography is breathtaking, particularly the opening shots, the oil strike gone awry, and the final scene in the bowling alley.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that the composer of the score was none other than Jonny Greenwood, guitarist for Radiohead. A stunning piece of work, the music really drove the film.
PTA definitely wore his influences on his sleeve with this film, without ripping anyone off. There's some very Kubrickian elements, espescially the opening and closing.
Overall, I loved it. Can't wait to see it again, because I'm sure there's more to be uncovered that I missed the first time. I'm not sure where it ranks with his other films, only time will tell. Magnolia is just about my favorite movie ever, but this movie surely gives it a run for its money.
