Supposedly they broke down music into different "genes" each song having 40-200 genes and well they use these genes to tell from what music you like and what music you don't like.

I love Pandora. So much.
I especially love their music podcasts. If you ever wanted to learn more about the music you listen to, these short podcasts are what you're looking for. You can learn about guitar effects, salsa rhythms, techno, recording vocals, rapping, and more. They are awesome.
