So. I'm applying for this internship that I want very badly. Without going into a long drawn-out story, I'm a college student that doesn't want to live at home this summer, and so I need a paid internship as my excuse/ticket out. One of the questions on my application is sorta stumping me. Of course, I want to do this perfectly, so I was wondering if any of you wonderfully kind people could point me in the right direction?? Anyone that can help me out will get some extra homemade treats from yours truly at the Inforoo Brunch this year, since I don't have much karma to give away right now. Plus, food is better
The question is: What is the most significant event occuring in the broadcast industry during the past year? How will this event affect your career development?
I guess I should clarify that this is an internship with a broadcast advertising agency. They are in the business of buying and selling broadcast time. I'm a journalism major and I want to go into some kind of writing but I'm not sure what.
I have been doing research but I just don't know a whole helluva lot about the broadcast business. I didn't know if any of you fine people work in that area. If anyone could help me out just with a direction, you'd be saving the day! Not just the day but you could be changing my future!
I was also going to say writers' strike reading that first post.
How would it affect you?
Reruns means less people watching, means less audience for advertising, means ads run cheaper. I'm sure there's some opportunities in there. Greater diversity of ads? New advertisers entering the fray? Different audience composition to steer toward?
I'm not entirely sure, though I did take a couple comm arts courses. That's about all I got for now.
I think the writer's strike opens up a very expansive subject for this question with lots of inventive ideas and is probably the best answer if you can narrow down the likely consequences and effects. But I thought I'd mention a couple more traditional and narrowly focused items just in case you're interested.
"Major advertiser and ad-agency associations are banding together to push ABC, CBS and NBC to reconsider $125 million per year in fees the networks charge them just for the privilege of buying time on their TV shows"
The higher ratings of network programming has always allowed the "Big 3" to charge these fees over cable rates. A substantial change in the ad fee structure could be BIG in a more traditional sense and might better appeal to a more traditional company.
"A majority of the five members of the Federal Communications Commission has approved a plan to rewrite disclosure rules for product placement on TV, throwing some uncertainty into a fast-growing area of TV advertising."
With the advent of DVR and the corresponding ability to skip commercials, product placement has become a huge source of advertising ( about $1 billion)
