Are there any yogis out there in inforoo land? I want to get started doing it cuz my back is fucked up and I dunno it appeals to me. But I kinda want to start out on my own using a DVD or something. Does anyone have any good suggestions on a yoga DVD for beginners? There seems to be so many online....

I don't know of any DVDs or anything, but you might wanna take at least a few classes from a good instructor so you can learn proper form for some of the basic poses at least. He/she would be able to correct anything that you might be doing wrong so you don't hurt your back even more.

^what she said. Plus yoga is more than just exercise for the body. Try it!

I am a plus sized girl and I have had two back surgeries. I use simple yoga and it really does make a big difference. It makes you feel better mind, body, and soul.
It's all about the breathing. In through your nose and out through your mouth.
Try to find a Hatha yoga class - it is the very basic of classes; you'll do the sun salutation, forward & backward bends, inversion and twist. I know the way he was taught (through Yogaville in Charlottesville, VA) the class is 80% the same every time so you get used to the positions and work every part of you.
Also, the Hatha method, teachers are not supposed to adjust your form unless you are doing something that is damaging to yourself. Usually your body will tell you if something is wrong if it a beginner class. I close my eyes at class so the competitive Allie doesn't show up and then I have no clue if people are checking out my form. Also helps me get really into the moment.
Go to a class at a small yoga studio, and not a gym and you will find more chill people that are psyched you are there to experience and won't be as intimidating or annoying.
As for videos, my husband has a bunch from Yogaville that he likes but between you and me, I'd rather see a cute instructor than his Swaami (RIP) and find them very... low-budget. He also loves Rodney Yee... I love Rodney Yee's bod
also, I have a good DVD that I originally got from netflix and then bought used from amazon - it's designed for non-skinny girls and doesn't expect you to really know anything, but at the same time doesn't treat you like an idiot. And you don't go into any crazy poses, but still feel awesome afterwards.
I also really like that she's a plus sized model who became a yoga instructor because she couldn't find yoga classes geared towards someone with breasts and stomach. And she does it all in a unitard.
I don't know if she still teaches classes, but when she did, it was in NYC so you could look her up!

i say take the leap and go for it!!
yoga was the best class i took in college (admittedly, the fact that my buddy and i were the only two guys in the class made it much more enjoyable for us)
Now you just told me that friendship is all I'm forced to repair the breech in my wall Illusions and dreams, as usual, it seems Sabra girl, they've been my downfall
I used to go all the time. I really liked it. I felt more energized after class and just felt better in general. I second the opinion that you should go to a small class as opposed to the gym.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that farting appears to be the norm (or maybe I just shared too much information about myself). But the first couple of times that I went, some people let out some loud ones. And after a couple of ears of corn, farts=uncontrollable laughter. If you ever get into the "Happy Baby" form, you'll know what I'm talking about.

I definitely need to get back into classes. I was going for the last few months of last year, but i havent gone since school screwed up my schedule. Definitely start with a beginner level hatha class. I tried a vinyasa class, but its all about proper movement, and I need to work on that. The girls in that class were more my type though. The beginner class was mostly older people, and they fart easier. My back is screwed up also and yoga is definitely helpful, so I will probably go back soon.

My husband always reports back how many farts and how many va-jay-jay shots he gets in his classes. Farts in some poses are expected, but he loves the ones during yoga nidra (deep relaxation). Everyone is meditating/sleeping/in their groove and suddenly PFFFFFTTTTTTBRRRRRAAAACHHHHHHH... he's so glad people usually have their eyes closed or facing away from him when these take place, yogini or not, he still finds farting funny ;D
And OMG the crotch shots (he's always disappointed because it seems to be on really old or unattractive women... or MEN). Who would think it's a good idea to do yoga in loose shorts? He said once a woman came in a skort - the type with the loose shorts underneath and no undies. And be sure to wear pants that fit (many roll down showing butt crack in poses), and tuck your top in before a shoulder stand! ;D

Yoga is so wonderful! I had to take 2 gym courses this semester before I graduate so i picked karate and yoga... and yoga is the best class ever! It's so relaxing and it just makes you feel so good afterwards. I think the instructor is a big part in the experience though. I strongly suggest yoga to anyone! Don't they have a yoga tent at Roo? Anyone ever do it before?

If you are in NY, you should totally check out OM Yoga. Cyndi Lee is the founder, and she is a great teacher. I took a class with her once at a yoga convention and it was great. She also has dvds, which is the closest I can get to her studio haha.
Some other good dvds: Rodney Yee (I like the power yoga ones and the AM/PM one).
The Basic Yoga for Dummies is good to start or as a refresher, but the long winded descriptions can get old fast. The instructor, Sarah Ivanhoe is good. She also has other yoga dvds, ranging from hatha to power, depending on what you like.
Also they sound like they would be cheesy, but mtv has 2 yoga dvds that are really good, MTV Yoga and MTV Power Yoga.
