i believe that its the wormwood that contains a higher concentration of thujone the mild hallucinogen that makes it illegal to sell in the U.S., but not to buy (over the internet) or posses..
some friends of mine got some Absente brand absinthe and half a bottle had two people pretty drunk, and these people drink heavily each weekend and during the week occasionally.
yes it is the thujone.. I have heard that some brands are sold in certain states (obviously containing very low amounts of the stuff) I think this was the third brand I've tried. Still haven't done the "ritual" preparation of it yet.. boo hoo maybe there will be some at bonnaroo???? maybe not. i still love the stuff, thujone or not.
are you talking about pouring the water over the sugar into the absinthe? if so, my friends dit it. a word of advice is to not use to much sugar. they thought using more would help but it really didn't. just 1 or 2 cubes made it best
ASomething about sugar, there is a match or lighter involved to burn the sugar.. and the water.. wonder who the hell thought of it? oh, and a "special" spoon. aka something else to rip you off on the cost of.

I believe most 'absinthe' is really just potent alcohol, pretty much 151. ;D Theres very few true absinthes out there, if i remember correctly. Its been a while since i looked into the stuff though.

I've always wanted to try absinthe and all this talk made me break down and order a bottle of Strong68 from Germany. For $121, that stuff had better kick my ass!!
everything you ever wanted to know about absinthe. The brew shop I work at sells abstinthe kits, which basically steep wormwood and other flavoring/coloring agents in a mix of everclear & vodka. My experience has been that Thujone definatly adds something to the really strong alcohol buzz (try smoking wormwood alone and you'll feel what I mean). but it is not a hallucinogen, not even a mild one.
