I have to have a new laptop. My miminum needs are:
NOT a Dell Not a Mac, Dan has a Mac Huge hard dirve Ton of RAM Windows XP Professional (no Vista, thnx) Decent video card (not a gamer) Good sound card
What am I leaving out?
I currently have Compaq 6910 at work and love it, but it might be over my budget. (Which I will know when I get my bonus next week)
Thanks in advance to all Inforoosters who can help.
I love you - I just have no knowledge for you. I helped my parents pick a laptop for my 14 year old - but that was based more upon budget (under $500) then anything else - I got her what I could for the price and I will be the one shelling out for upgraded memory in the future.
I have an HP laptop that is about 4 years old - it has been perfect for me - but it only has a 40 gig hard drive - I bought a 500 gig external for it and all is good again
I have an HP and so does a friend of mine. We both love ours. I don't know what your price range is but you can get a pretty schnazzy one with all the bells and whistles for under 1,000.

I'm using an HP DV5000 refurbished, bought from Frye's. paid ~700 with ext. warranty. 80 gig hd, 800mhz, 1 gig ram, DVD+R Lightscribe burner, Win XP Media Center 1st time I tried DVD drive, it wouldn't recognize any disc, had to have swapped out, now having intermittent problems with keyboard/mouse pad buttons (after 1.5 years, can't remember if warranty still in effect, need to find paperwork)
EDIT: That should have been 1800 mhz proc. speed not 800.

Yeah that's about the same specs as mine. I bought mine new for just over 1,000. I've had it for almost 2 years and it still works fine.
thats what i've always used and its just fine for me. most websites where you order will let you select your specs also... usually offer a choice between XP/Vista

Actually most of the bigger companies have phased out XP. For example, HP only has one series with XP, but if you customize it and upgrade almost everything i believe it was still under 1k.
and I love it. I bought mainly for size (Small). The screen is only 10.6" but is as crisp as a new dollar bill and I hook up to a monitor in the office. Around 3lbs but 4.5 hours (proven) from one battery charge.
Our company wipes Vista off all new PC's and 'upgrades' them to XP.

I have had my Toshiba for a while. I left it in my car for Coachella and Bonaroo last year with temps inside the car above 100 degrees and have had no problems. Toshiba makes long lasting laptops. Once i get another upgrade I will ether go Toshiba or MAc, Mac preferably though. I wont touch Vista for at least 3 years, if ever.
Sorry it took me so long to get around to this thread...
I'll PM you with some specs....it's gonna be hard to buy new w/o Vista cause Uncle Bill has basically put the kabash on selling XP anymore.....
HP is OK....Toshiba is pretty good and some of the Sony's are good if you are dead set against Dell (I've had 2 Dell laptops of my own and countless others at work that have done me very well....)

I like my Dell, this is my second one in almost seven years, and I would def. consider buying a third. (I maybe getting a mac though, for a change of pace)
