Ok, I need some help. My boyfriend and I are interested in buying a Playstation 3 and I don't know the first thing about it. Can some of you that know about this help me with everything we need to know/buy?
There are 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB, but I have no clue what this all means or what we will need. We have no interest in playing online. It will just be the two of us.
What accessories will need to be purchased? Doesn't it only come with one controller?
Can we play PS2 games on this?
What about the cooling pack thing? (Can't you tell I'm super technical?)

I think only the 40GB and 80GB models are still in production. Although I can only find the 40GB model online.
Here's a FAQ that tells the difference between the two:

40GB will be all you need. Two cords included (Power cord and one you hook up to TV)
Its all go from there, just put in the game and your set
If you have a HDTV (Hi Definition) and want to take advantage of it, get the more expensive version that comes with the extra cable for it.
No cooling pack needed it isn't Microsoft
Only one controller comes with it, so if you want two you will have to dish out an unfortunate 50 for another wireless one, unless you find cheaper on Ebay or an offbrand which works just as well just feels a tad different.
After you get it, if you do that is, sign up for gamefly.
Works just like Netflix except for games. Handy in my situation with money too tight to just shell out $60+ for only one game.
Its a cool system though look for GTAIV next month
Get a wii for instant entertainment...for the hardcore gamer, you should go with the xbox 360. Most of the software available for the ps3 is also available for the 360. Even GTA is coming to the 360. Xbox's online marketplace is what really blows ps3 out of the water. There is SSSOOOO much content on there and of course everyoone knows that xbox leads the way in online gaming consoles.
I am an xbox geek so I will obviously be touting that. We have 2 360's and 2 old xbox's in our home. All of our family members are gamers...even my old 35 year old azz...and we wouldnt touch the ps3. Way too expensive, not enough unique software titles to justify and the online service is serioulsy lacking to xbox.
If you do decide to go with a wii, you HAVE to get Super Smash Brothers Brawl. it is the fist and as of yet only titles playable online on the wii.....
The 40GB is NOT backwards compatible, so you won't be able to play PS2 games.
the 20 GB and 60GB have the actual hardware for the PS2, if you can find one.
the 80GB has software emulation (not PS2 hardware) so it should be able to play most PS2 games, but there's no guarantee.
yes, it only comes with one controller and they're about $45-$50 for official Sony brand. i personally stay away from aftermarket accessories, cuz they usually crap out on me fairly soon.
the wii is also super extra fun! ;D
i refuse to play xbox because it is microshit. i bought the ps3 solely for rock band and any and all final fantasy games that will be released someday...
I think alot of people have a had issues with the xbox, but we own two of them and have not had any issues. If you have a personal thing against microsoft, its understandable...much like I feel about wal-mart.
But remember, you can get rock band on the 360 also....I never was too much into final fantasy....
LOVE our wii though!!!!

The exclusives for PS3 are super strong for 08'. MGS4, GT5, and maybe FF among other things like Home and LittleBigPlanet. The 60gig has the best backward compatibility as mentioned, as does the 20 which is impossible to find, but the emulation on the 80gig isn't as bad as its presented, it will play most PS2/1 games, but the 60 and 20 should play all. The 40gig is the quietest, has better wifi, and uses less power, but it doesn't have all the media slots of the 60 and 80. Right now the 40 is the only being produced, but I believe the 80 is being reintroduced with MGS4 and i would assume with the updates of the 40. If you will be pretty far from your router get the 40, if you want full backwards compatibility and all the media slots get the 60, if you don't really have any obscure PS2/1 games and want the media slots and a bundle get the 80. Remember, the HDD can be upgraded, so i wouldn't really base your decision on that. The PS3 is also starting to be used a lot as the lead platform for cross platform games, and the HDD makes it so the games can load on your system, allowing faster load times. It also has built in Blu-Ray, which ain't too shabby. ;D

Yeah that's the main bonus with the PS3. I mean you'll pay around 400 for a good blu-ray player alone. So if you have the Hi-Def TV and all that, the PS3 is easily the better investment. HD-DVD is going the way of Betamax and quickly.

HD-DVD is actually already dead. And the PS3 is pretty much the best Blu-Ray player out, and probably forever, since it can be updated via firmware updates. Its also one of the better upconverting dvd players.
<--------- has an hd-dvd player and a dozen movies. and pissed about it.
Ouch! Been waiting to see who would win, now I can go ahead and get a blu ray player. Which, once again, geting back into console, microshit is going to release a bluray drive for the 360 so I will probably wait for that. It is my main medai device on my hd-tv anyway/
That was a huge boost for sony when the ps3 came, the built n bluray player. The 360had an optional hd-drive you could purchase seperately, really glad I didnt now!
I am more into first person shooters than anything, well and driving games a bit, so the 360 gives me everything I need. Right now ALL of my gaming time is being split between COD4, H3, Orangebox, and FEAR (I know fear is old, but I just got it...)
I am wanting to check out SuperSmashBrosBrawl though. A buddy just got it the other night, I havent got to play it yet. My son wants it bad too so we may be picking it up soon.

If you don't mind there not being support for HD-DVD in the future you should pick one up for 20$, pretty good deal. Though i do prefer a good MPEG-4 transfer over a VC-1.

Yeah, that's the reason my boyfriend keeps harping on the PS3 instead of the other systems. I am fine with that, but I am usually in charge of the research before we make a purchase like this and I'm already feeling a little overwhelmed with all of this.
I mean, shit, the last system I had was a friggin' Nintendo...the original.

If you are looking for a Blu-Ray player the PS3 is probably your best option just because it can be updated to future Blu-Ray profiles, its already 1.1 and we should get 2.0 early summer.

If you want to pay for everything outside of a 10 minute demo, than yes. Sony offers free online multiplayer, which is how it should be!

I agree that it is far too expensive, but with Metal Gear Solid IV being exclusive to the PS3, and the Final Fantasy titles coming out this year it's too good to not pass up. Although, I'm going to wait until it becomes a $200 paper weight before I purchase either one.

If I had $300 right now, I'd be at Meijer buying a Wii and Smash Bros!
Seriously, don't waste your money on either of the other two. Buy a Wii, you will be so happy you did!
