Snobs can go either way though. Some are posers, whose snobbery is on the pretense of fitting in with a certain crowd. Some are genuinely superior to you in their music knowledge. The latter might be assholes, but they also often have knowledge of music that you would never otherwise learn about.
Pitchfork is a perfect example of this. Do they often come across as know-it-all assholes? Yes. But there's no denying that you will come away knowing more about the music that's out there if you follow their site.

Also, they must name drop very unknown bands and artists and act like they've been listening to them forever, ESPECIALLY if you just discovered them. When I saw Blitzen Trapper last night and was totally blown away by the show, this friend of mine was like, "Oh I've been listening to them for like a year, it's nothing new for me." grr.
I took a class a couple of years ago called "The History Of Indie Rock"...there were so many music snobs/hipsters in that class it was nauseating. I seriously think one guy made up bands and albums just so he could look cool. It was ridiculous. I have a strong distaste for music snobs.
I have no clue who Blitzen Trapper is. That makes you a music snob!
Nahh, they're just a great indie band you should give a listen to! Good stuff. I just heard them on XM a couple of weeks ago for the first time and went to their show the other night.

music is music. if somebody likes it, then its "good" for that somebody. genres and categories just limit musicians and listeners from discovering new sounds. i think that any expression of music is valid.
i haven't heard most of the albums on that list. so i guess i'm not cool. plus, i like KISS so i have been a victim of music snobbery quite a bit.
one more thing, at the risk of being labeled a snob, i still think Celine Dion and Kenny G SUCK! no one could possibly like that crap. i think i just contradicted myself.

I'm often accused of being a snob because I enjoy music most people around me can't stand (or don't understand). I think part of it is having a classically trained musical background. There seems to be a sharp divide between people who actually understand what is going on in the music and people who just listen passivly. There's nothing wrong with passive listening, but I think it's weird to call someone a snob for enjoying something on more than one level.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

I don't call people a snob for enjoying something, I call them a snob for being an asshole about it. I think that's the defining feature of a music snob.

Exactly. I have a degree in music. I would hope that, because of that, I would "know more about music" than someone who doesn't. That doesn't mean that my taste in music is any better or worse than anyone else's, but I hear lots of things in music that, as you say, a passive listener might not hear.
As someone else stated, I see a music snob as someone who refuses to listen to a band based on whether or not they get mainstream airplay, or because they're labeled "country" or "emo" or whatever. That irritates me to no end.

musical snobs are the ones who berate you for not being "open" to their kinds of music, but are also the first ones to tell you your music sucks
thats a perfect description. i will admit though that i have been like that with several of my friends haha (im talking like jessica simpson stuff here)

My roommate thinks im a music snob. I sit in my corner of the room silently listening to some of my old hippy music at moderate volumes and he brings his system out and plays something really loud that he knows I won't like. I get mad because he just overpowered me totally with his system, and tell him no I don't like it and he calls me a music snob. I don't usually hate on music unless i think its really bad, coincidently he really listens to bad music...Then after he calls me a hater he says "how do you listen to that old shit" and I have to remind him of the roots of his music...

sounds like a total a$$hat.
agreed. and makes me happy i dont have roomies anymore ;D ;D
I perform classical music so people assume I'm a music snob but I'm also jazzed to see tons ofbands at Bonnaroo. A musical snob is someone insecure in their own taste.
