So yeah, I'm moving cross country, and I've been wondering what to do with all these old VHS tapes? Is there still an interest in this stuff or is it generally worthless? Even if it wasn't worth anything, I guess I would at least like to see them go to someone who might enjoy them rather than the trash, but right now, 50+ tapes takes up a lot of space.

i'm cleaning out my closet today, which is going to be just a tedious as packing up an entire house. i'm just finally fed up with having so many random pieces of clothing that i have somehow justified keeping around this long, and have a trash bag full of stuff i'm giving away.
really, in the long run, its easiest to just give it to goodwill rather than finding some way to get rid of them otherwise. someone will enjoy them.

Okay, I really want this thread to ride out the night before I make any decisions, but a question.
What is the better route? Goodwill, Salvation Army, AMVets? Who is the "better" of the groups? Who stands to gain the most for their cause from my donation? Are there any other groups that accept donations of clothing/housewares and such?
EDIT: My GF is donating a bunch of her old clothes that dont fit to a battered womens shelter (this is a reason i love this girl of mine)

The feeling is great, because some of this shat i just keep and keep and keep, for what? And I've already sold three pieces of furniture to friends, so yeah, that was cool.

I know in Roanoke there's a homeless shelter type place that takes donations, usually just clothes and other necessities, and they go straight to homeless people that can stop by and get clothes for free.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

Don't know what your tax situation is but donation is the way to go but now you need to itemize all you give to charity. Both Goodwill and most local libraries take VHS and cheerfully give receipts. The Salvation Army's website has a good list of suggested prices for donated clothes.
Another possible place to donate VHS tapes - nursing & retirement homes
i like the goodwill's myself bro. but i'd check for local charities that may be goin' on or even make a little extra cash on ebay if you can...either way works. which weekend are you leaving?
Get on the internet. We have a McKay books here that buys VHS, so I am sure Chicago has something equivalent. If that fails, Goodwill is by far the most magnanimous of the bunch.

if you got song of the south ill take it....buy it.....but i doubt you got it
edit: there's this guy that comes into my store thats from africa and he goes back there once a year and takes massive amounts of clothes, shoes, first aid, etc. with him, so i just donate to him...other than that, its goodwill or salvation army
^^^ libraries are a good option, as are schools (if they're kid-friendly)
And if you can't find someone to take them (Goodwill does turn away items they won't be able to sell), look for recycling places in your area. Maybe check with a dub house or production studio, they would at least know of a place to recycle if they don't do it themselves.
VHS tapes start deteriorating after about 10 years.
There are some local record/cd/video stores that still buy VHS. You'll get like .50 cents a piece for em, but it's better than nothing. Not saying donating them is nothing, because the satisfaction of helping out those less fortunate souls that can't afford a dvd player would be well worth it
I know from managing a video store that a lot of schools still have VCRs for the teachers to use and nothing else, so if you have any age appropriate VHS's, teachers are always looking to have something to show their classes when students are in testing, etc.

in my town we have a habitat for hummanity store, I take EVERYTHING there. instead of turning a profit off of junk like goodwill, they take all the proceeds and build houses...and that is the main appeal to me.
not to mention, their resale is the cheapest, I try to give a little extra whenever i go in to shop.
Join a list near you. Post your unwanted stuff with your zip code. Pick one of the replies. Set up a pick up time. People will come to you and get the stuff. No having to drive to Goodwill. Plus, you pick directly who it goes to. The stuff goes directly to someone who needs it, not to whoever has the cash for it. Goodwill and Salvation Army stores are getting expensive nowadays.
I love Freecycle. I've given and received much stuff through this route.
With VHS tapes, it's always wise to check and see if anything you have is of value. I own hundreds of commercial VHS tapes along with a couple more hundred recorded tapes, and you can really make a pretty penny off of these old tapes:
Go to Ebay, if there is a certain series of tape, a good number of tapes from a distribution company that is no longer around, or commercial sports tapes, you're bound to have some that're worth a lil bit of money. Also, there are sooooooooo many things that were released on VHS that isn't on DVD, and some that will never be released on DVD.
