No idea what VO is but if you rip your own CD's with iTunes, there's no DRM on them, that's only applied to purchased items. I just tried a couple of my tracks and they play fine with WMP, VLC and Nero players.
I don't even see VO as an option in iTunes, I've used 192 VBR for ripping with great results, I pick 320 VBR for a few special CD's but I'm not sure I can honestly tell the difference.

They have some form of protection. I tried to give the ex a discs worth of mp3s back before she was the ex, and not one of them work in her iTunes.
Also, when you say 192 VBR, what do you have your max and min bit rates set at?
I can't see any options in iTunes to set min and max bit rates. In "importing" under the "advanced" tab of Options, I have selected "MP3 encoder" and "Custom". Selecting "Custom" pops up a dialog with more options where I've picked 192, VBR, Highest Quality (maybe this is where min and max are set?), Auto sample, Auto channels and Joint stereo.
