Truely a tragic milestone, although I read somewhere that some consider these deaths statistically insignificant because the average number of military deaths is fairly constant.
Coincidentally, PBS will air a comprehensive look at the war and it's prelude and on a 2-part Frontline special, "Bush's War".
Reviews say:
Sometimes it seems we are drowning in numbers. The war in Iraq has been no exception to this numerological addiction... It is the most comprehensive look at the war you are going to get from any news source...
''Frontline'' reports on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; the constitutional questions about torture, rendition and the Guantanamo Bay detention facility; wiretapping of domestic phone calls; the vice president's unprecedented power; the infighting between the CIA and the Defense Department and between Defense and State; the rise and fall of Donald Rumsfeld; and the decision to launch the troop surge in 2007.
Look's like it might be good (unless you're understandably tired of analyzing the whole deal by now, that is)

I was all excited about this post....I was like yay! 4000th post!!! Instead, it just brought me down.
Two days after Christmas 2006 my buddy Billy was killed by an IED explosion. He was a Marine and on his second tour of Iraq. He was due to come home in less than a month, instead he came home a little early. I never thought anything like that could happen to someone I knew. These are real people everywhere all over the world.
My upmost sympathy goes out to the friends and families of the victims.

i have been lucky in that my friends have come home safe and sound. however, it breaks my heart when they talk about friends they've lost. i can't even imagine just watching a buddy die.
may the rest come home safely to their families, and let those who have passed rest in peace.
"In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Vice President D!ck Cheney was asked what effect the grim milestone of at least 4,000 U.S. deaths in the five-year Iraq war might have on the nation.
Noting the burden placed on military families, the vice president said the biggest burden is carried by President George W. Bush, who made the decision to commit US troops to war, and reminded the public that U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan volunteered for duty. "

uhhh.... thanks for really stepping up and sharing some responsibility and some sympathy there, Mr. Cheney...
Signing up for armed services may be voluntary, but not much after that is. And that's all I have to say about that

RIP.
I'll keep my opinions to myself as well, but I will say that I have a few friends in basic, a couple being shipped out in 2009. I hope all this mess is sorted out by then.
