ok - so my 14 year old is borrowing my 10 year old's iPod. She connected it to her computer and then dragged and dropped it to the iPod - it said it was syncing it all - yet when they got done - none of the music is showing on the iPod.
ipods can only be synced and formatted to one computer at a time....so...maybe that's it? i'm not sure honestly...i would search for it on apple.com/support

see - that makes no sense to me - what if your computer crashes or you get a new computer - does that mean you have to buy a new iPod also?
that actually happened to me....i didn't have to buy a new ipod i just had to reformat the ipod (which deleted all of my songs). now i keep a portable hard drive with all my songs so i won't lose them in case it happens again.
but you can't share music with your friends from your ipod which i think is dumb and if you have two computers, you can't use them both for your ipod.
also...if the music is on the ipod and not playing..try resetting it..that usually works for everything. i think it's "menu" and the center button. just hold them down for a few seconds

you can use your ipod on more than one computer, i think up to 5 - but you shouldnt sync the 2 ipods (if i remember correctly) - i THINK... someone else needs to help you there - you have to go onto itunes and make a new acct on that computer for your 2nd ipod goin into the new computer... like i have my ipod synced to this laptop, my parents computer in florida and my work computer...
k - thanks - I just went to the support page and read all the instructions for resetting - 14 year old says she thinks she has it working - biggest problem is - 15 year old has over 700 songs on her computer that 10 year old wants - 10 year old does not want music from my computer
You can use your pod on more than one computer. Just make sure in the i-tunes software that you UNCHECK the "sync" option. You want to manually manage your files.
I use my ipod on 3 computers and my daughter uses her ipod on two of those....

THANK YOU! that is the answer I was looking for!
Luckily - 10 year old only had about 10 songs on hers anyway so we just reset and restored but now I know how to be able to use it on both computers.
(thanks Becca also - your answer was what I was looking for also!)
is there any way to disable the auto sync from the ipod? my hard drive died and my ipod was set to auto sync. i don't want to erase my ipod, but i can't add anything to it now either.
So if I want to give my ipod to a friend and have them put their music on mine it will not work?
it will - but follow roofan's instructions

Speaking of iPods, I just got a new iPod Touch, and it is BAD ASS. I also did a "jailbreak" on it and now have NES and SNES emulators (with about 50 games so far) at my fingertips. The WiFi internet with a full browser is sick. It'll be great to carry my Touch around at Roo, and not have to worry about lugging around a laptop (for e-mail too). It's an amazing piece of technology (Yeah, I know... Boys and their toys). Highly recommended from The Train!

AND I would just add....
Since you can only EVER have your ipod associated with 5 computers at a time (I know that SOUNDS like a lot but believe me....NOT! )....make sure if you do stuff like that a lot you UNASSOCIATE your ipod with your friends computer as soon as you get what you want off the library.....otherwise you'll reach that limit awful fast.....
