Anyone here ever participated? Not that I have any extra time, but I have always thought about doing this and I think I'm finally going to give it a try.
I'd like to hear about your experiences if you've done it.
I have not done it but BB/BS did a thing with the high school/elementary school here where they pairs up a HS student with an elementray school student and my 10 year old got to have a bog sister for a semester - she had alot of fun - the HS students came into the classroom 1 x a week for a fw house and worked on special projects with the kids - had a big Easter egg hunt for the kids and then a spring party as well.

i was in a program sorta like meg when i was in middle school. i think it was called PALS. we would go to two elementary schools twice a week and we had a kid that was assigned to us. usually they were special needs kids, but it was SO rewarding. one girl really attached herself to me, and her mom sent me a letter thanking me for the change she'd seen in her child.
i also was a camp counselor for an entire summer for girls ages 7-18. its amazing what an 8yr old can say to make you realize how nice it would be to be so innocent again.
^^^^similar - what surprised me with the program here - instead of pairing the "bigs" with "littles" that were special needs or "littles" that really needed it - they just picked a classroom and paired "bigs" with each student in the class - guess that way there was none of the typical fgrade school nastiness from the "littles"
Sarah really enjoyed the extra attention once a week and they put together a powerpoint presentation and had alot of fun doing it
I participated in a tutoring program where we tutored inner city kids to help them pass the "No Child Left Behind " test so the schools would not lose funding.
Some participant, along with the college Dems, kept the program going after the test too.
There's another program I'm gonna check out this week though. It's called CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) where you act as an advocate for abused and neglected children to aid them in dealing with the child welfare and court systems. Many kids have no idea what is happening and have no one who is purely on their side as their futures are decided. Sounds like something that is needed.

Oh CASA is a wonderful thing - I worked with them alot as a paralegal here but it will break your heart at times because the Judge does not have to go by your recommendations at all and sometimes the judges choose to ignoire the CASA report completely.
