I'm thinking about becoming a teacher. What do you guys think of it? I was just thinking one day of what kind of job I could do that would be a good job, not excruciatingly painful, and lead to the most possible happiness in my life and I just said teaching sounds good.

Funny story, A friend of mine had to do an observation of a teacher last semester. He called the guy to set up the times and learned he was a football coach and history coach.
Most people have an idea of what this should look like.
He showed to find a young teacher wearing birkenstocks, courtaroy pants and some kind of baggy shirt. To top it all off he had a beard and long hair. Oh and a Dead patch somewhere on his clothes.
My friend told me after he got over the shock of his appearance he turned out to be a great teacher and learned a lot from him.

Goes to show you can't judge a book be the cover.
that's funny - some of the best teachers I ever had did not fit the standard picture of what people think teachers should look like

Do you like kids? Picture the most annoying kid you've ever had to deal with and then think about how well you would do as their legal guardian for 10 months. If you think you can deal with that, go for it.
My biggest problem with teachers when i was in school is that it seemed like many of them just took the job because it looked easy and they got the summer off, they weren't in it because they liked, or were particularly good at, working with kids.

I hated teachers that would think that you had no idea what was going on in the world. Some teachers that broke out of the so-called box were great. But the question is... How much will you actually remember??. I'd say that the stuff that was "out of the box" stuck with me easier.
I am not a teacher myself, but I bet around 5-10 percent of the people at Bonnaroo are the past two years at least 2 people camped around me have been teachers. Of course they do get the summer off so it may be a little easier for them to make it.

I am a teacher. I teach Talented Theatre to High School students in Louisiana. I love my job. I think the pay is good even though I hear people complain about it all the time. But I'm young and stupid. What do I know?

I am going to school now (and will be forever, it seems) and I am going to teach. I want to teach English/Literature at a college level, preferably community college.
No parents...all adults...and my class don't start till 11am or later if I want them to.

I am a teacher that works with chilldren with dyslexia, math learning disabilities, and written expression disabilities. Many students have some degree of ADD or ADHD (yes, it exists). Many have very high IQ's and are the most creative and funny kids to work with. Our school could be a sitcom.
You know that line in the 'Office' about winning the lottery? If I won it, I'd be back there in the morning.
The difference is that I teach at a non-profit private school where there is parent support and a coherent administration....big difference.
Kids are great, but they need support that they often dont get in a public school...and from their parents in certain populations. I will not go to a public school to teach special education b/c the system leaves teachers powerless to actually teach these populations.

Do you teach in New Orleans? If so you might have taught some people I know, I have a handful of friends who are heavily involved with Drama.

i teach 5th grade.
its nice to have the summers off for sure.. but teaching is hard work. it doesnt end when the kids go home. and you always have the fun parent conferences! its amazing how when you step back you realize how you really are a huge part of these kids lives..... for only 10 months.
weird.
ps. field day was today. man i have a farmers sunburn!! haha.

I have no problem with kids, but I'm aiming towards 11th grade or higher to teach, I'd love to be a college professor. I just always loved the teachers I had that broke the mold and were so much fun, and I wanna be that person that makes life at school not so bad for these kids for that class. I feel like that kind of teacher always gets the most to stick. Every great teacher I had TAUGHT me something. All the boring ones I can barely remember names let alone what they tried to teach me.
Watchin' a stretch of road, miles of light explode. Driftin' off a thing I'd never done before. Watchin' a crowd roll in. Out go the lights it begins. A feelin' in my bones I've never felt before...
I have a couple friends who are teachers or who have gone to school for it anyway... It's hard to find a job around here. One friend teaches at Sylvan and makes decent money, but she's not teaching her love which is literature.
