Depends on how you're grading them. If it's purely on how influential they were, then Kurt Cobain deserves to be high on the list. He defined an era of guitar.
If it's on pure skill, well, the list is kinda broken. So many of them are apples/oranges, too, anyway. A style is a style. No single style is better than another. Can of worms.
Yeah, I think Warren and Derek are pretty much on the same level as far as how much I love them (and I agree with you, they're definitely more skilled than Kurt). Kurt Cobain played a bunch of de-tuned stuff, songs where the solos sound totally weird because the tuning is totally jacked. I like weird tunings, though. My favorite band from the grunge scene was definitely Soundgarden.
I never know what to think about those damn lists. All I know is Jimi should be #1. I'll fight for that. Otherwise, whatevs.

its an opinion list basically...cause technically speaking, imo, there are a few left off that list, i didn't see dimebag on there or navarro. im not sure if i saw chet atkins either. i think you can't compile a list like that with sooo many great guitarist. its mostly personal opinion.
David Gilmour at 82? Then Neil Young at 83? Influentially and talent-wise, both these guys blow Cobain out of the water. Then Lou Reed and Pete Townshend not even in the top 40? I usually agree with RS, but damn that's retarded.

Pretty crappy list imo. If they're going by influence Tony Iommi at 86... I'm also not a big Keith Richards fan, i rather see him and Joe Perry flipped.

I can't say i agree with much of this list... Derek Trucks, David Gilmour, and Robert Randolph got shafted, and Warren Haynes should be up there a bit more I think too... but what do I know
these 'top (number)' lists are always really subjective. i usually like to see what criteria they're judging by before passing judgement.
but seriously, cobain? i will admit cobain was an extremely influential songwriter but as far as guitarists go, 80% of the people you can find jamming out in any guitar store on the weekends have better chops than that guy.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

david gilmour and neil young are way to low on this list both top 10 imo. jack white way to high and johnny ramone love him but 3 chords isnt that hard
Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Trey Anastashio and Robert Randolph should be higher IMO. I think that's the purpose of this... it's kind of like a water cooler convo. topic.
Allman and Hendrix were great guitarists, but I can't help but feel putting them 1 & 2 has less to do with their actual output and more to do with the timing of their premature deaths. I'm in no way hating on either guy's skill. Just think it's kind of ridiculous to rate them higher than guys with decades worth of work.
Also, lack of Willie Nelson and Carl Perkins on the list is telling. Willie's easily one of three most talented guitarists I've ever seen live, and definitely one of the most excellent technical players out there.

That list is shite. It truly is a strange world when Curt Cobain (who I love) is rated a better guitar player than Frank Zappa, among several others on the list. And where the hell are Joe Satriani and Steve Vai?
If they're going to call the list "Best" guitarists, IMO it should be about technical merit.
EDIT: I see that they say Top and not Best. That incorporates more than technical ability. Still think the list is shite.
