Oh - you are sooo bad for me - I now want one of those - I want I want I want - I just saw my iphone wish sprout legs and run away from me screaming - I think I am gonna get one of these instead - it makes so much sense with as much as I read anyway and the books are alot cheaper then buying a bestseller in paper form
^^^see- in the long run this would be awesome for me - I go through at least 2 books a week
I'm like you Meg, at least a couple books a week. I read constantly. I usually have at least one fiction, one non-fiction and one poetry book open at one time and read whatever seems right at the time.
But I hate reading off a screen though. Just find it "unnatural" and distracting. Maybe it's just my age.
^^^Ya know - I was just thinking about this and trying to fogure out how I do manage to get through 2 books a week and realized - i carry a book with me where ever I go.
If I am waiting - in the pharmacy - car pool line - before a function at the kids schools - anything like that - I take the opportunity to read.
As for the screen reading - I think it would be need - I watched the video that is on the amazon webpage for the Kindle and it shows the actual screen - looks just like a book - pretty neat little gadget - hope the price comes down some tho
The whole deal is the screen. It uses eInk which creates actual balck dots on a page with no backlighting or anything. Completely unlike any laptop or PDA. Unfortunately you can't try it in store first but the Sony reader uses eInk also and that's in most Borders stores. You can read in bright sunlight and read for hours with no eye strain.
Like you I tend to have 2-3 books on the go, plus other references and I love having them all at hand. Also, you're not limited to buying books from Amazon; there are a wealth of out-of-copyright classics avaiable for free across the web.

Cool gadget though!
Its not like a regular LCD screen or anything like that. Its E-ink so it is almost like paper. Sony has an e-book reader out as well, but I think the Kindle is better. For the amount of reading that I do, its not really necessary. But because I'm a gadget nerd, I want one.
It looks pretty cool. Ireally like the idea of just loading a new book whenever you need one; no trips to the book store or library.
Coincidentally, I was just thinking last night about how much I like the whole reading experience though, including the cover art, the feel of the paper and even the smell of a new book. ( I was reading a book of poetry by Rumi, a 12th century Islamic poet, and it has a great cover with very nice Islamic art on it.)
I can see using the Kindle to read books and if I really like them, getting the "real" copy. When you read a lot, you come across a lot of average books that you really don't want to re-read or own. This would be perfect for that. I have waaaay to many books on my book shelves and we have no used bookstore here. This could help with the endless clutter.
Let's hope the price comes down soon.
Karma for the thread ccrmac (though I hate ruining your "69"). I'll get you later for the link, Meg

I actually found it amusing that I am pushing the gadget and I don't even own it - yet
the more I look at it - the more I want it - the only drawback I can see is that I like to read in the bathtub - I don't think I am taking a $400 gadget in the bathtub with me.
Thanks for the Karma, Troo - I have had better 69s anyway so don't worry...
Try this for cool: in the bookstore at the airport I see "Waht is the What" by Dave Eggars and the reviews look pretty good. I whip out my Kindle and check online to see if it's available in Kindle form. Yes it is, so I download the free sample chapter (10 seconds max). Waiting for the flight I read the sample and in two clicks I've bought the book (30 seconds download) and I'm reading it on the flight.
Meg - I even have an answer for your bathtub problem - Kindle message boarders (who are just as nerdy as us) have identified that the Kindle fits exactly inside a quart-size Ziploc bag. I have personally tested this in the bathtub and can verify that it works.
