Some folks can justify anything in the name of the almighty dollar:
"I think you have to try to be a good steward of the land," said Jerry Peckumn, who farms corn and soybeans on about 2,000 acres he owns or leases near the Iowa community of Jefferson. "But on the other hand, you can't ignore the price of corn."
We'll pay for it one way or another, that's for certain.
Ethanol uses 3.75 gallons of fuel to produce 4 gallons of fuel. While doing so, it is also one of the roughest crops on the land for growing.
Conversely, building CSP plants(concentrating solar power to boil water to steam to turn electric producing turbines) on a mere 9% of our southwestern desert land, would provide our current usage of electricity--eternally. and with very minor environmental impact. But very major economic impact would be felt by the producers of fossil fuel energy. And we all know THEY guide our energy policy and Cheney has been willing to do anything to keep from testifying to congress about it.
Keep in mind - I did not mean for this to get into a political or environmental discussion - I just thought i was amusing that they are growing so much corn - I need more corn - I walways need more corn
Interesting article, Meg. With the price and demand of corn going up, kids are going to be growing the stuff in their closets and parents' basements! ;D

I picked this up at the Cake show the other night. I know it's a serious subject, but I had to laugh and laugh. I just struck me as so f'n funny. (I had been into the corn at the time.)
