I've never been to Bonnaroo, this will be my first year.
ACL 2007 will be my third time going, and it's amazing. I love the people, it's nice to go home and shower each day, and the lineup is solid top to bottom.
I'll pop back up after Bonnaroo and let you know more though ;D
ive been to ACL three times (last three years) and bonnaroo once (last year) let me put it like this ACL is good Bonnaroo is really good.
granted i think the heat is much harder in TX than TN, especially since we dont have rain as much. Bonnaroo is much better in my opinion, and im going to try to go every time now for the rest of my life. ACL you dont have latenights, which is a key factor. You have more bands, comedy tent, arcade, everything FERRIS WHEEL. You also have way longer sets. I dont mean to be downplaying ACL cause it is a perfectly good festival, and i plan to go every year as well. Its just there is so much more at bonnaroo.
upsides of acl is you do get to go home and take a shower every night (BUT you dont get to camp!), but other than that i think they are pretty similar
i mean said over and over and over again in other threads bonnaroo is a whole other world.
Bonnaroo is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than ACL. You have to understand, at Bonnaroo, you have a large space to move about and a buffer zone between stages. ACL has no tents, too many stages and is a virtual dust bowl if there's no rain. On top of that, the schedule's the biggest clusterfuck of any festival, including Lollapalooza. It's not just the preheadliners that provide conflicts. Last year they had John Mayer up against Van Morrison and Willie Nelson opposite Massive Attack. The only headliner who got their own time slot was Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. And it extends beyond headliners. What genius programs Phoenix, Ghostland Observatory and I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness opposite each other? SCI vs. Racounteurs? Ben Harper opposite the Flaming Lips? Simply ridiculous.
I live 10 minutes from Zilker, and I have next to know desire to go to the festival. I live nearly 1,000 miles away from Bonnaroo and am going to the festival.

ACL gets a C+. Bonnaroo gets an A
I love Austin City Limits, I think you're a little harsh on them. I think it's great value ($90 for three days last year) and you get to shower each day.
I think Bonnaroo's scheduling conflicts are much worse too.

Maybe I'm being harsh but...
$90 if you buy early. And tix gradually increase to full price. And they don't announce the lineup until you're pretty much paying top dollar for a 3-day pass.
As for the conflicts, I can't relate. ACL has a significantly larger lineup with less time to play. Last year, two of their headliners played opposite another act. It's a matter of mathematical probability. Conflicts will occur more often if you have less major stages and more acts to fill those stages in less time allotted.
I dunno about Bonnaroo yet, but I would think if it rained and got muddy I'd probably miss a shower pretty badly.
Due to Hurricane Rita, the Sunday of Austin City Limits in 2005 was 108 freaking degrees. Combine that with the dust bowl created by the lack of precipitation and winds, and it was a nightmare. Personally it didn't really faze me, but a lot of people suffered from it. They have since put in a three-part irrigation system, and the festival grounds by comparison were much nicer last year. After the heat and dust of ACL, the shower each day makes it a lot easier to start anew each day.
I don't think it's fair to complain about them doing tickets before the lineup, every festival does that now. Bonnaroo does it, Lollapalooza does it, Coachella does it. This year three day passes will be about $110 with services if you buy them when the first go on sale, with the price probably rising to about $150 (maybe less) at the final tier.
About the scheduling conflicts - people bitch there aren't big acts at Bonnaroo during headliners, people bitched at Lollapalooza about RHCP playing unopposed, and then people complain because they put Massive Attack and Willie Nelson against one another. As far as I'm concerned, that's a good idea. Those are two very different acts, and with 65,000 people you have to split them up somehow at the end of the day. John Mayer versus Van Morrison sucked but I could see 45 minutes of Mayer and 45 minutes of Van and be satisfied. Van the Man was terrible anyways ;D
I think if you get the tickets even at $100 you're getting amazing value for your money. I know it's not the full experience that Bonnaroo is, but this'll be year three and I plan to go for years. Austin is an amazing town, I plan to move there someday. As a last plus, I've brought my conservative Republican dad both years and he's enjoyed it thoroughly. So much so that we're gonna do 10KLF this year to try out a new fest.
^^^I live in Austin, so I guess it's a bit different for me. I do get cranky during SXSW as well.
I'll probably go this year since it seems a lot of acts who'll be in Europe this summer might happen to end up at ACL in the Fall. I'm just hoping we don't get screwed over with some adult contemporary type acts like we have in the past (ie Sheryl Crow).
I've heard rumors about Arcade Fire playing, but I'm taking those with a grain of salt considering they could also be playing a double bill at the Paramount a la Sufjan last year.

I really doubt that happening Dude. The Arcade Fire loves to play festivals, Coachella twice, ACL, Lollapalooza.
The Arcade Fire WILL be there. Same for Wilco and Bloc Party. The organizer of ACL the TV show said he was hoping to book bands for the show around the time of the festival, and said that Wilco and Bloc Party were both doing shows, and that he hoped the Arcade Fire would. I know that could mean hopefully they'll do the fest, but I think they're already doing the festival and he's trying to get them to tape a show.
I don't know. Like I said, I live in Austin. I run in circles where these rumors get started, and 75% of the time they are utter bullshit designed to draw interest in the festival. I sort of view speculation at this point to be pointless with all the craptastic rumors CSE likes to circulate.
I understand what you're saying, but I listened to the interview, it was on an Austin radio station. It was the promoter of the TV show, not someone from the festival. I don't think he has any reason to lie or start rumors about bands, he was trying to hype the TV show for this year. It's definitely better odds than someone saying "I have a friend on the inside, and Bob Dylan/Neil Young/Stevie Wonder are all hella playing this year!!"
Haha...nice Stevie reference there. That's a popular one. My fav is "I hear they're offering Stevie 5 million to play ACL."
But yeah, I know what you're saying, but I'm still very skeptical. Too much experience to the contrary with ACL lineups. The guy who books the show ACL is a bit of a gossip anyhow. Everyone in the Austin music scene is though...
Haha. I LOVE Austin. I want to be back there and at Stubbs so, so badly.
I read an old newspaper column from 2005 where the guy leaked Coldplay, Oasis, the Black Crowes and...Stevie Wonder. Too bad he didn't appear, he could have made an amazing year legendary. I figure he'll headline before too long. I have a bet this year that either Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Neil Young or Prince appear at the festival. It's risky, but I figure they'll pull one of those four as a (the) big headliner.
Prince would be sick...I think the whole ACL message board agrees on him.
Yeah, in that interview talking about Austin City Limits, the promoter said he'd been trying to get Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen to do the show for 30 years, but they just won't do it. Too bad.
Prince's club does kinda throw a wrench in things, but I think he's going to go on tour now, I don't think he's booked there every Friday and Saturday all year, I think he's still planning a tour. Now would be the perfect time for ACL to book him, he'd be a great response to the Police, RATFM and Pearl Jam.
