I think this is why Bonnaroo needs to go back more to their roots next year, which i think they will after giving everyone a year off. For an indie type fest, that initial has bonnaro beat i'd say, although bonnaroo is still the far better festival.
Yeah - kind of like how Coachella dabbled with jambands for a little bit in past years, realized they can't win that battle, and went back to their bread and butter this year (Alt/Indie)
I'm excited for Chicagoians, but at the same time more than half of those bands may sound SUPER cruddy if they keep the same sound people they did last time (notoriously, The Shins came off horribly among others).
Great lineup, if you're into seeing only 20-45 minutes of them.
Doesn't do a helluva lot for me. I will be pissed if Bonnaroo does not end up booking Femi Kuti though.
I think the lineup fits the format a lot better than last year's lineup, even if it's not as wowing. BUT I also think it reflects two things: !1) Headlining acts are hard to come by this summer. 2) Virgin has upped the ante.
As crazy as this might sound, I think Lolla might have a hard time selling out this year. That lineup is definitely cool, but I question how much appeal it has outside of the hipster community. That is to say, a lot of that lineup looks more suited towards Pitchfork than Lolla. On top of that, they have ONE headlining act. Daft Punk, Ben Harper, Iggy & the Stooges, Muse...not really headliners on the major festival level stateside.
i may get smitten for this but i honestly think i like this better than the roo lineup for this year...though i wouldn't go to lolla, it seems to be a lot less fun

I'm sorely tempted, but with one cross-country trip already on the agenda ('Roo), and Live Earth happening just 10 minutes from my house, think I'm gonna have to skip Lolla.

That's a good lineup, but I'm fond of Bonnaroo's. I'll probably end up going to lollapalooze anyway because my roomate's parents live in the area, so we can just crash there or something. There isn't camping at Lolla right?

No camping at the plooz. Am I the only one not that impressed? I don't like any of the headliners (Iggy back in the day, but I'm not one for reunion tours) unless Modest Mouse will be one and most of the mid-level bands that I like are already at Bonnaroo.
Modest Mouse, Interpol, My Morning Jacket, Patti Smith, TV On The Radio, Yo La Tengo, !!!, Roky Erickson, Tapes N Tapes
Those are the only ones I would like to see added to Roo and I just saw TV on the Radio a couple weeks ago. I definitely wouldn't trade them for the Flaming Lips, the White Stripes, Wilco, Bob Weir/Ratdog, DJ Shadow, etc. Maybe it's just me, but I could definitely see this being a case of grass being greener on the other side. Don't forget what we've got!

I tend to agree. There's nothing about this year's Lolla lineup that makes me think anyone will remember it a year from now.
The lineup looks really tight. It is not as top heavy as Bonnaroo, but it looks more solid as a whole than roo. What will be interesting is how the V Fest will compare to Lolla when said and done since they both on the same weekend and it seems that V Fest has won the headliner war thus far.
If I have a gripe about the fest, it ist that palooza still looks like it is a showcase for an artist than a place for an artist to let loose. What I mean by this is that the sets are short for the most part, but the price one is paying to get in thats a good deal.
Sh*t man, last year Bonnaroo had nothing on Lolla. Chicago had a MUCH better lineup: everything Bonnaroo had and more (besides Radiohead). This year, I would dare to suggest that they are about even.
Pearl Jam would be great. Iggy & the Stoges would be even better.
But in an idealic situation, there would be 4 big festivals. One for the north, south, east and west. Everyone who can afford a plane ticket or car ride would be able to go to the closest one. I think that is the ultimate aim. Bonnaroo has the south covered, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
The times have finally caught up with our culture!
Coachella has RATM & Bjork (who I really wish would play the south at SOME point). Lolla has Peal Jam & the Stooges. We have THE POLICE, THE WHITE STRIPES, WIDESPREAD, and TOOL!!! I feel humble in the respect that we have such a good time ahead of us!
I really respect those of you who say that Bonnaroo is simply catering to the mainstream success of other fests (as in Roo becoming more indie or mainstream), and I would ditch The Police for a few bigger indie or alternative acts personally. But what I truly respect about B-Roo is that they are trying to attract music fans in general. They are trying to respect the love of music.
