Why not? That's a vacation to remember. You can go to the aquarium, buy some crack, go to the festival, pick up a hooker, and then get mugged. What's not to love? ;D

Sure they do! It's part of the whole "family friendly" thing they're trying to do.

"I hate what they've done to XPN Bunch of folk nazis ruined my favorite station."
whats that from?
It's from the Dead Milkmen song "The Big Sleazy." The song is pretty musch a rant on how much radio sucks, and targets XPN in particular. I'm not from Philly, so I can't actually say weather or not it sucks, but the lyrics came to mind when I saw the call letters.

Hehe... well, true. But I have to say that the waterfront is pretty different now versus even ten years ago. Between a battleship, children's garden, massive aquarium, minor league ballpark, Tweeter Center, yacht docking and two riverside outdoor stages, it's certainly a change.
"I hate what they've done to XPN Bunch of folk nazis ruined my favorite station."
Hehe... good ol Dead Milkmen. 'Course you have to also know the context there, University of Pennsylvania tweaked XPN into a near NPR in the 80's. Dead Milkmen (who would actually perform live on XPN frequently after that song came out) helped lead it back to more "alternative" rock in time for the 90's. It's still a bit here and there for format (as seen by the festival lineup) but still squarely away from mainstream with a respect to some obscure music.
And the complete lyrics to that song would probably help stir the hippies here:
"It's a long way to Anchorage But that's where I'll go with you We'll travel so far, dear To escape that morning zoo I hate MMR I hate YSP I do not like the Grateful Dead So just don't talk to me I hate MMR I hate YSP You know that classic rock Does not interest me People are getting angry Maybe just they should Cause some of us can still remember Back when XPN was good Peeling's woo woo woo peelings I hate what they done to XPN Those folk Nazis ruined my favorite station I hate what they done to XPN If you hear it now it's just a pale immitation Well it's brunch with the Beatles A tribute to Billy Joel Four hours of Doobie Brothers And they call that rock and roll"
^^^^Youse Guyz are just joshing...right!?? I been through Newark....made it in one piece more or less.....
Camden's a bit sketchy. A lot better than it used to be, but still pretty sketchy. Newark's a bit larger, and does have some really nasty areas. I really wouldn't want to be lost in either place late at night. I once got lost after a concert in Camden. Ahhh... good times. But seriously, the area near the riverfront, where the Tweeter Center and the aquarium are, is heavily policed especially when there's an event going on. Interestingly, the county jail is across the street from the amphitheater. Has anyone else ever parked next to the jail? All the inmate are staring out their little windows, watching you drinking and smoking.

Day or night? Biiiiig difference... I work in Newark by day... the city rolls up after 5pm and locks it's doors.
Hmmm...have only driven through in the daytime...flown through at night.....never been through Camden...guess I've been more sheltered than I thought - LOL! Can't be worse than DC tho'...

Seriously-- definitely not worse than where 9:30 is. Or even was. Camden in the daytime (when this festival largely takes place) at the waterfront is practically Disney World compared to nighttime away from it, or compared to 9:30's neighborhood.

Really? The one time I was at the 9:30 (fall of 2005, IIRC) it seemed a little sketchy, but I wouldn't have thought it that bad. Not disagreeing (I didn't really do a full recon of the area, just enough to find a parking spot), just surprised. I'll have to be on the lookout if/when I'm ever in the area again!

Just compared to a well-lit family aquarium and minor league ballpark!

Newark airport is barely even in Newark (it's on the southeast side of town); unless you're cabbie's trying to beat traffic, you probably wouldn't even see the city proper. North and East of the city's relatively safe (some great food too, if you like Spanish, Portuguese, or Brazilian BBQ), but the southwest areas by Irvington are bad mojo.
I'll take a walk up the West Side in NYC over a stroll down Market Street in Newark any night of the week...

MMMMM! Brazilian BBQ is good stuff! Or at least Argentinian BBQ...haven't been to Brazil yet....love the Chimichurri almost more than the BBQ!
The festival's schedule has been tweaked for a special guest before Bob Mould on Friday. Possibly one of Jim James' surprise solo appearances this summer?
