The three-day music festival in south Fulton County called the Echo Project promised good music and environmental awareness.
But the festival poured out its own pollution, in the form of noise, throughout much of this past weekend, according to some homeowners within earshot of the festival grounds.
"It was absolutely horrible, all three nights," said retiree John Lawrence, whose 175-year-old farm is about three-quarters of a mile from the festival site.
Lawrence, like many of the closest homeowners, lives in Douglas County, on the other side of the Chattahoochee River from the riverside festival grounds. "I could hear it inside the house, I could hear it inside the basement, and I wear hearing aids," said Lawrence.
Douglas County commissioner Mike Mulcare hiked out to the Douglas side of the Chattahoochee on Friday and Saturday to take readings with the county's sound level meter, and he said readings were typically 6 to 8 decibels higher than Fulton's limit of 60 decibels at the property line.
"Their sound guy came over Saturday afternoon with his meter," said Mulcare, "and they read the same. He was surprised that it was as loud as it was."
Mulcare said he received about a dozen calls and e-mails from Douglas neighbors complaining about the sound. "Douglas County citizens shouldn't be subjected to this intrusion into their quality of life," he said.
Organizers of the Echo Project have a 10-year lease on the 350-acre parcel in the bucolic south Fulton pastureland where they staged the weekend's gathering. They estimate 15,000 attended.
The land is owned by concert organizer Nicolas Bouckaert's family.
"We made every effort that we could possibly, to make sure that we're making as minimal an impact as possible," said Jennifer Doane, of Optimal Production Solutions, which managed the festival.
Doane said the sound levels were within Fulton standards, but added that the festival will reconfigure the stages slightly next year to reduce sound levels in Douglas.
Fulton County and Douglas County officials plan to meet with festival promoters sometime next month to review the impact of the festival. Mulcare plans to air his grievances at that meeting.
Yeah, I agree with the one guy, "It was absolutely horrible, all weekend!" ;D ;D
All I can say is, I know exactly how they feel! Although I aint pissed about my situation, I love that I live at Bonnaroo, but I have plenty of neighbors who absolutely loathe Bonnaroo. Fook 'em
Yeah I hate when I have to hear music all day long. It's a bummer
Ahhh....but if you had to listen to MUZAK all day.... That's probably how that old dude felt....LOL!
I was wondering about how it was going to go over with the locals....but I figured it would be the richy-riches in those 5 mil McMansions we passed going in complaining....not the local yocals in Douglas Co.....LMAO! ;D

Y'all are rough, give the poor guy a break! Not everyone enjoys rock music, and not everyone enjoys rock music so loud they can hear it in their house at all hours of day and night. I'm not saying they should discontinue Echo or any other fest, I'm just saying the guy and people like him have valid complaints and they should be taken into consideration by the promoters.

i agree with steveternal. if it was a celinedionaroo fest down the street from you guys, there's no way you would just 'can't beat em, join em'. there's not enough corn and beer in the world to endure that.
