Decided to see The Flaming Lips again for the first time in 9 years. I told myself I wouldn’t go see them again unless they played Yoshi Battles The Pink Robots. And it was absolutely worth it! Very cool getting to hear One More Robot, Ego Tripping At The Gates of Hell, and Are You A Hypnotist.
Ironically, the true highlight harkened back to the last time I saw Flips on The Terror tour. The band blew everyone away with a truly intense rendition of Always There In Our Hearts. Although their theatrics are very fun, I’m amazed by what Wayne, Steven, and the band can do when they lock in on the music.
The set concluded with My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion - complete with a long speech and a mechanical bird flying around the theater, A Spoonful Weighs A Ton, and Race For The Prize - the first song I ever heard them play live over 15 years ago.
No surprises here but MMJ last Tuesday in Portland was the absolute strongest cure for the concert blues I’ve had after coming home from N2 of Dead and Co. at the Gorge (I’ve been avoiding indoor shows lately with the quiet Covid-19 surge). I also caught the Alvvays + Maggie Rogers tour two nights later at the same venue; both artists really delivered, even though Maggie decided not to play Alaska for some reason. It was fun hearing her hype up Alvvays (she caught them touring their first album at a small venue in NYC when she was an NYU student) when the shoegaze love was really apparent on some of her newer songs.

Local Natives were very good last night. Sun Hands live never gets old. Wished we got more from Hummingbird for the 10 year anniversary, but what they did play was great. I've seen them a ton, but it's still really enjoyable. Didn't sell very well though.

Saw Fleet Foxes and My Morning Jacket at the Hollywood Bowl last night. this show was rescheduled from last weekend due to the tropical storm. what a great back to back set from two great acts though.
I haven't seen Fleet Foxes since they added the horn section. not sure if this is just from this tour or if they are permanent touring component now, but it really helped to fill out the sound. last time I saw them was either 2011 or 2013 so it was nice to hear some of the songs that have come out since the last time I saw them live. Helplessness Blues was great! Jim James came out to perform Expecting to Fly (Buffalo Springfield cover) with them.
this was my first time seeing MMJ since I saw them open for Roger Waters at coachella in 2008. I had no idea who they were back then and instantly became a fan, but listening to them on record has never done much for me. last night reminded me of why I love their live show so much. they only played 11 songs, but it was the ideal 11 songs for me personally. To return the favor from the Fleet Foxes set, MMJ brought our Robin to sing Wonderful with the band. love love love -> Touch me 2 -> one big holiday was such a great run!
another thing of note is that this might have been the most well behaved bowl crowd i've seen in a long time. no talkers, very little cell phone use, everyone paying attention to the show. it was refreshing!

didn't realize there was another Portlander on the board! Edgefield is such a great venue.

I was there last night! And I agree, it was such a nice show, and the crowd was really chill
MMJ and Fleet Foxes at Hollywood Bowl was a lot of fun. As someone who’s seen MMJ 26 times now, that set was too damn short. Still happy I went, especially since I scored a miracle last second. I was very impressed with Fleet Foxes sound with that horn section. And MMJ was as mighty as ever - I can never be that disappointed if I get to hear Steam Engine and Dancefloors.
Won freebies to DMB in Irvine on Saturday. Never seen them and I'm not really into jam bands (yet) but it was pretty good despite recognizing virtually zero songs. I know they get a bad rap from a lot of people though.

On August 8, 2004, a tour bus belonging to the Dave Matthews Band dumped an estimated 800 pounds (360 kg) of human waste from the bus's blackwater tank through the Kinzie Street Bridge in Chicago onto a passenger sightseeing boat sailing in the Chicago River below.
On Sunday, August 8, 2004, at 1:18 p.m.,[6] Wohl was alone in Tinsley's bus and driving to a downtown hotel when he emptied the bus' blackwater tank as it crossed the metal grates of the Kinzie Street bridge.[7]
Passenger boat Chicago's Little Lady was hosting the 1 p.m. Chicago Architecture Foundation tour of the Chicago River. While passing under the bridge, the boat received the full contents of the tank on the seats of its open-roof terrace. Roughly two-thirds of the 120 passengers aboard the tour boat were soaked.[8] The boat immediately returned to its dock, where all passengers were issued refunds.
The liquid waste was brownish yellow in color, and had a foul, offensive odor. The liquid human waste went into passengers' eyes, mouths, hair, and onto clothing and personal belongings, many of which were soaked. Some of the passengers suffered nausea and vomiting as a result of exposure to the human waste.[6]
No passengers suffered any long-lasting physical health effects from having the waste dumped on them.
On August 8, 2023, the Riot Fest Historical Society attached a plaque to the Kinzie Street Bridge commemorating the 19th anniversary of the incident.

"On the afternoon of Aug 8. 2004. At this very location, the Dave Matthews band tour bus emptied the septic tank over the Chicago River drenching passengers on a boat tour with 800 pounds of human poop. No one died that day. But many wish they had."

also i don't particularly enjoy the music of DMB but have been to a show and had a fun time. i also really enjoyed dave and friends at roo 2004. to quote jeff winger "excuse me for being alive in the '90s and having two ears connected to a heart."
okay i know about the poop dumping lol and that's awful. that aside - i'm still aware that DMB can evoke a strong reaction from some people and i'm kind of out of the loop as to why. Yeah, it can get kinda smooth jazzy at times...it's kinda John Mayer/Sting-adjacent I suppose...but the musicianship is pretty great. Carter's a helluva drummer.

the early 00s jamband scene was extremely tribal. mostly you were either a phish person or a widespread panic person. i enjoyed both bands to the dismay of both my phish friends and panic friends. but many a fierce debate was had over the merits of each act in shitty college housing filled with weed smoke and scarface posters.
the one thing everybody agreed on was dave sucked and dmb fans were the worst people on earth. the only carve out was every jamband fan said dave matthews and tim reynolds live from luther college was good.
Saw Bully last night at Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville. It was her last show before she takes a two week break since she lives here. She brought out Soccer Mommy for Lose You. Really good show. Lots of energy and even some engagement with the audience. Alicia seems pretty shy.
I have a summary of the DMB poop incident on a t shirt and it's one of my go-to concert fits; always gets a fun variety of reactions from people
I also came here to post that Weyes Blood from 4 rows back was magical
I’ll be seeing Weyes Blood at Homecoming in a couple weeks. I’m new to their stuff. I worry I’ll get bored in a (likely afternoon) festival setting. What should I listen to to change my mind?

Front half of Titanic Rising (A Lot's Gonna Change through Movies) is a very strong run of songs. Everyday probably the most uptempo of those

I think a friend of mine was at that show. He recommended I see Bully out here in California last week, which I did. Wasn't really familiar but it was a great show!

Have seen some really good DJ sets lately. Went to The Blessed Madonna’s after show for Ezoo and she killed it. Coco & Breezy were a lot of fun too. Then saw Hot Since 82, DJ Minx, and Alan Nieves last night who were all great. First time at Knockdown Center and really enjoyed it; felt like a really well-run place, lots of room, and good lighting + sound.
The birthday party might be remembered as the signature show of the Renaissance World Tour, with appearances by the Big Three and cameos from Blue Ivy, Diana Ross and Kendrick Lamar. It was exceptional, confirming Beyoncé is the best live performer going.
And yet it wasn't Coachella. I know I'm grading on the most ridiculous curve possible, almost certainly unfairly. Maybe I'll soften my position in the days, weeks, months or years to come.
If you're in or near any of the final shows, go see it. It is three hours of damn near perfection.

Phoenix killed it last night, the production is top notch and Thomas Mars is a maniac, he straight up climbed to the mezzanine level off of people’s shoulders
Second time seeing Beck and he still does nothing for me. I don’t think standing directly behind Beck’s most enthusiastic fan helped but something about his live performance is generally off-putting to me but I can’t really describe what exactly
Only made it in for 2 songs from Weyes Blood but at least 1 of them was Movies 🥰

Finally got to see U.S. Girls last night after having two canceled shows on me. She played at the Teragram but maybe filled 2/3 of it up, so I wish she stuck with the Hollywood Forever Masonic Lodge like she was supposed to play in 2020, which is a better venue anyway. Sound was off at times too.
Nonetheless, what a performer who should be a much bigger star. Dancing every which way until she got to "Woman's Work", where she suddenly went full werewolf snarling and screeching with intensity. In a Poem Unlimited was surprisingly the least represented in the set of the last 4 albums, but it was worth the wait to finally see her.
Also caught Hatchie again last week, speaking of popstars who should much bigger than they are, with a fairly different performance than I saw from her just last year. She couldn't afford a drummer for this tour, so she went heavy on her early EP material and did some of the other tracks stripped down. I don't buy merch often these days, but I bought some having had that reminder of how tough it is out there for smaller artists. Had a good chat with her too!
Met up with xfinitypass and some other homies and caught Weyes Blood tonight here in Richmond, what a phenomenal vocal talent. Really nice visual aspects to the show too, her sparkly white gown and somewhat subdued lighting fit right in with the soundscape

incredible show, one of the best voices in the game rn

Was lucky enough to go to The Atlantis for the first time last night to see Spoon, my favorite band. Great venue and was really cool to see them in such a small space. Spoon absolutely crushed it, probably the most rocking set I've seen from them. They have slowly become a fantastic live band. Maybe due to a 3 night stand in DC, but the band and setlist felt really inspired jamming hard and throwing in some deeper cuts I haven't seen them play. Can't recommend Spoon or the Atlantis enough
