I caught Shovels & Rope on Friday, which is always an enjoyable show. However, they are now always a reminder of my greatest festival regret. Leading up to Roo 2019, I was torn between Shovels & Rope and John Prine, who were playing in pretty much the exact same time slot. In the end, I decided to take a nap at camp instead of seeing either. And then Brandi Carlile joined Prine for “Summer’s End” and then he died. And that’s why I no longer nap.

Had a very cool week of shows..
Bombay Bicycle Club: I have been wanting to see them for a long time, pretty sure I had tickets for COVID, and finally got to. Played a good mix of new and old stuff and was an excellent show. Jack has such great energy and you can tell him and the rest of the band really enjoying playing. They were at their best when they got to rock out. Olive Jones was a very good guest vocalist. Had never heard of Mustard Service but enjoyed their opening set.
SPRINTS: Was looking forward to this after loving the album and was not disappointed. They ripped. The crowd was mostly middle-aged Irish people and then like 10 of us moshing but it was a great mosh even though it was like 110 with no air flow in the venue. Singer and guitarist came into the crowd for the last song, Little Fix. Literary Mind was my favorite track they played.
Orbital: Absolutely packed show for the early of their two shows Friday. First stop on the Green and Brown album tour. Both are obviously great, but enjoyed brow more live. Loved the mom and dad rave crowd. Satan is an interesting encore choice and the visuals of bombs, Hitler, Trump, etc. are quite a way to end a show.
Kim Gordon: Awesome night of music. They had two rooms going at the Knockdown Center with L'Rain starting things off at the main stage. Her and her band were great. Really need to catch her at a headlining show as I love the new album, but still very cool. Next up was Kelsey Lu who blew me away. I didn't know much about her going in and was not expecting her band to include a harp, cello, and upright bass. Combined with Kelsey's beautiful vocals, it was ethereal. Finally, Kim and her band rocked. I was iffy on the album, appreciated it as Kim doing what she wants, but just wasn't my favorite musically. It worked really well live though and the sound at KDC was great. Awesome crowd, awesome music.
Hannah Diamond: My queen. Being able to see Kim then walk like ten minutes and see Hannah 2 hours later was a cool NYC moment. Hannah is perfect and the crowd was absolutely loving her. Such a fun dance party. Frost Children finished the night with a DJ set playing a great selection of 2000s hits.

Sleater-Kinney's current touring lineup rules. Their tour with Wilco didn't come here but that band of men they were playing with then seemed to not be their best lineup. Thankfully, they're back to all women and kicking ass again. Helps that the new album is much better than I expected.
Went both nights they did in LA - I'd argue night 1 at the Wiltern was the stronger show when they didn't have to rush up the coast afterward. Since the Wiltern now makes the front pit a separate ticket tier for most shows that costs double the price of normal GA (combined with a new VIP area by the soundboard, LN has done their best to kill the Wiltern post-covid), that meant a lot of the diehard fans were farther back. Carrie noticed this, and after commenting multiple times about "Why is the middle way rowdier than the front?", instructed all of us to storm the front pit. Security wasn't happy, but they were powerless against the 30 or so stampeding lesbians, which my on-and-off partner and I happily joined. One of the most rock n roll things I have done.
Lucy Dacus was side stage 2nd night palling around with Palehound, who I last saw open for her. She left after 4 of 5 songs of SK's set and hugged her pals goodbye - shame on you, Lucy! (still love you though) Saw Fred Armisen and Riki Lindholme there both nights per usual.

CMAT was really fun last night. Amazing energy from the whole band and the crowd was dancing the whole time. Irish people really show out when their bands are here.

Saw Kendall Street Company open for YamYam last week. They blew me away. Reminded me of a slightly more bluegrass, less jazz version of Turkuaz. Played a Todd Terje cover and turned it into an extended jam, made my night. Whoever the keyboardist was they had for that song and another one needs to be a permanant part of the band. It was the peak of their powers

I love to hear that, they’re my most seen band ever because of how many house/bar/frat shows they played around Charlottesville when I was living there from like 2016-2021. They’re all very solid dudes and I think their live show has only gotten better and better
fell into last minute cheap tickets for chappell roan last weekend. the crowd was all dolled up on theme and into every second of the show. so much fun.

Saw an eager young up and comer last night in Columbus... think his name was Bruce Springfield? Played for about 3 hours, really good set. This guy's going places 👍

This Flaming Lips tour kicks ass. 2.5 hours, Yoshimi in full, all the hits, lasers, inflatables, props, crazy energy, pristine production, just everything you could want out of a show.
Just back from Austin Psych Fest. Fun festival with constant music. Coming into this, I was most excited for Sunday which had a stellar line up of Alvvays, Kurt Vile, Dehd, Still Corners, Sweeping Promises and my personal favorite, Blondshell. I’m a huge Blondshell fanboy and I’ve yet to see her live. And seeing her on my birthday of all days felt special. Came in to find out it’s also Sabrina of Blondshell birthday too. Just a crazy coincidence that made today that much more special. Amazing set, she’s such a force. Played all my favorites from her debut including my favorite track of 2023, Sepsis. And Alvvays again just keeps getting better and better from each record to tour. I wouldn’t be surprised they do arenas on their next album cycle. Rad birthday show !
Saw Belle and Sebastian do two hours of deep cuts, as they tend to do. Two funny moments:
-When they had audience members dancing on stage, they did "If You Find Yourself Caught in Love". After Stuart sang the lyric "Shed a tear for the one you love", he held his microphone up to an audience member and asked "Can you shed a tear?" She then, unexpectedly for the band and herself, proceeded to scream into the microphone.
-During the encore on this tour they've been taking fan requests. Stuart agreed to do "The Fox in the Snow" after an audience member handed him a plush fox. After putting it on his piano, he said "If my wife was here, she's say 'you're not going to shed your twee image by having that there.' But she's not here tonight, so I can do whatever I want." He then told a story about accidentally seeing a video online of an iguana eating a fox.

By some miracle I got into the surprise St. Vincent show last night, who I missed on the last album cycle. Good, good stuff. If this was any indication for the main tour, her persona this time around is a nihilistic, dour punk star for apocalyptic times. "Shit's dire". Put on her best Trent Reznor impression for some of the new tracks. She's crowd surfing again too!

The Weather Station was great as always. It was fun in a bigger venue because with the louder sound because you could really hear Tamara Lindeman's vibrato so clear and crisp. She did two new songs that both sounded really good and continue on from the same big band sound she had on Ignorance and we got lucky because Macie Stewart of Finom came out for a couple songs to play violin and to hit some really beautiful vocal harmonies on "Subdivisions" as a closer. Great stuff.

Really good weekend of dancing. Four Tet's Sunday night set was banger after banger. I've been listening to salute a lot the past year or so and he exceeded my expectations. Just a really fun, happy set. Him and Sammy are going to be around a long time. Seeing Kieran hang out on stage for the Daphni b2b FP set was funny. The crowds were good all weekend, but the vibes Sunday were immaculate. Everyone was dancing and very kind. Was my first time at the Under the K Bridge venue (think its pretty new?) and loved it. Really big space and both stages were cool. The sound was incredibly loud, but very crisp and good. They had about 10 food trucks with good variety. Had "Italian riceballs" for dinner Sunday and they were fantastic. Basically no lines for food/drinks/bathrooms. And of course great to hang with Jeremy Fragrance and MovieBob.
Fontaines D.C. were great last night! Packed house and I was drenched in sweat after moshing most of the show. Crowd was really great. They played Favourite, the closer of the upcoming album, for the first time and its a pretty mellow track and I enjoyed it.
