Fontaines D.C. were great last night! Packed house and I was drenched in sweat after moshing most of the show. Crowd was really great. They played Favourite, the closer of the upcoming album, for the first time and its a pretty mellow track and I enjoyed it.

I’m sitting* at JC waiting for 18 more minutes hoping for a 2023 replica and another top 1 of the year show consideration. Bonnaroo last year was a fucking treat but I know him better now so we’ll see if the wow factor of how good of a musician he is.

damn. If there is anyone performing at this level that I need to see, somebody better tell me. Jim Watson gets 100% of the credit for turning me on. Band was superb as expected. Lindsey Lomis and Alita Moses (and the 3rd singer I can never remember her name) all hit impossible vocal notes and were only the sidekicks to Jacob. I told y’all when the tour dropped not to miss it. Gold star guarantee that it’s worth every fucking penny. Multiple audience choirs, sing alongs and claps. It double hits home because he did Moon River which was my infant/toddler lullaby my mom sung me to bed every night and Bridge Over Troubled Water which my dad used to strum for us on his classical guitar and sing to us when we were little. Welll. Sleeping on My Dreams. The Sun Is In Your Eyes superb but then Somebody to Love, a solo and credible Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong on piano. Plus tons more. I’ll refund anyone’s money who buys a ticket on this tour and doesn’t have a good time. Houston Saturday. Austin Sunday. Irving Monday, Phoenix Thursday… if you are anywhere near these cities you don’t want to fuck up. I’ll reiterate if Elton John and Freddie Mercury were more talented than they are/were and could play every instrument close to virtuoso level, this would be that in todays world.

Agreed on TMV. They are one of the coolest bands, so you kind of have to go with them.
Made a fairly spontaneous decision earlier this week to go to this year's Synergy party at Anime Central. Anime Central is the big anime convention in the Midwest and the Synergy party is their annual event that features DJ sets by artists who make the high-BPM music usually found in rhythm video games (e.g. DDR), usually all of whom are either Japanese or from outside the US. I got into this music through playing DDR when I was younger (and still playing it if it's nearby, tbf) and while it's pretty rare to see hardcore techno sets anywhere here in this country, it's basically impossible to see Japanese hardcore anywhere outside of anime conventions. This year I was excited primarily to see kors k and Ryu*, two longstanding producers for rhythm games whose music I've basically known for almost 20 years now, which is crazy. I'd only ever been to Anime Central once before, when I was 17 but that was the year they made the Synergy party 18+ only and I didn't have a fake (boo hiss to lame 17 year old shuck) so I never went.
It was crazy to finally be able to go and it was a great experience. You know how people complain on Boiler Room YouTube videos of the crowd being dead, always on their phones, not enjoying the music or whatever? This was the exact opposite of that: 3000 people, many in costumes (delightful!), dancing to really fast music as hard as possible without a single dip in energy for six hours straight. I never feel uncool when I go clubbing or anything like that, but it's truly remarkable how in an environment like this pretty much any form of pretense is eliminated. There's a guy in a light up oni mask in front of you dancing to a to a 180 BPM remix of "Caramelldansen". I hate the hyperironic posturing of the Shrek Rave shit but if there was ever a place to embrace the "it's dumb, just come have fun" mentality, it'd be this. Pure enjoyment all the way through.
Won't get into specifics of the music because it's not super worth it but a personal unexpected highlight was Japanese producer/singer/guitarist TORIENA, who I knew nothing about but actually played live guitar several times in her set (shocking!) and opened and closed with straight up guitar fuzz with a lot of hardcore techno in the middle. Somehow, there's a way to do something shocking and extreme with this kind of music. Pretty remarkable!
As for the rest of the convention, I knew more about anime when I was a teenager and don't really anymore so I actually felt way out of my depth a lot of the time lol. But the size of the convention itself appears to have doubled since I went last and it was worth the price of admission alone to experience some of the best people watching pretty much anywhere. thinking about doing it again next year!
Afroman played a block from my apartment, and I’d never seen him before. Show was funny and highly enjoyable. He came out with a 40 of OE800 and was chugging on that. It didn’t last long so they brought him another one. He said he’d been high all day and so he busted up a blunt. Some bad dad jokes were told. Because Hunter Got High, Because I Got High, Colt 45, Lemon Pound Cake were all great. He’s having a lot of fun with that raid on his house by Adams County, Ohio Sheriff. I know they sued his ass for defamation or whatever but he’s made all those pigs laughing stocks. So maybe they do have a valid claim.
Kraftwerk is not music I love but it very obviously inspired music I love.

Can you expand on this? Tempted to take my wife to see them tomorrow night. I took my dad to see them in 2016 and he found it boring 😆
Like ultimately I agree with him. For some reason I expected it to be much more dynamic. So about haflway through I had to shift my expectations and just watch the silly graphics and listen to the weird repetitive electronic - both of which were probably mind blowing in 82 or whatever

Decemberists were great last night. Been a fan for years but last night was my first time catching them. Good spread in the setlist, the new stuff comes across really great live. It was a weird outdoor set up where to get in the pit was Platinum tickets and Colin went in on them (the organizers) for a few minutes for having such a stupid setup lol. They've been mixing up the setlist on this tour and I was fingers crossed for "June Hymn" - they played it second. Chills! I was also surprised at some truly jammed out moments. Great show.
Last night, Roan stepped onstage at Brown’s Island, an outdoor venue in the middle of Richmond. She looked out at the crowd — thousands strong, along with more people watching from across the river and others dancing on a bridge above the stage — and said that this was the biggest show that she’s ever played. I’m sure she meant headlining show, that she’s played to more people at festivals or opening-act gigs. But last night’s show won’t be Chappell Roan’s biggest one for long. She’ll probably break that personal record at least a dozen times before the year is over.
