Wait. JBT is the opener and G. Love is headlining? Looks like my friend is due for a shin kicking!!!
That's how it was a Wolf Trap. Well, there actually was a third band that was the real opener. Then JBT, then G. Love. But you should definitely check with Red Rocks to see if maybe they swap places throughout the tour?

sooo dave was ON FIRE tonight. we got a -spoon (have never heard that live) -burning down the house (talking heads style) -sledgehammer (peter gabriel style) -watchtower and lots of dave favorites, including one of my all time faves stay or leave ;D no special guests but tim reynolds is digusting. even if your not a dave fan you cant deny the talent that is in that band!!!!! but tims guitar really makes each song sound diff.. good good shit not to mention , MSG is just an awesome venue to see a show
Felice Brothers played great tonight. Broke down spiritals with a sing along chorus. A.A. Bondy played the majority of the set with them and tore the hell out of the stage. They need to keep Bondy in that band.
Monolith Festival: Avett Brothers, Fratellis, BoH (met Ben Bridwell at the airport!), TVOTR, Foals, Sharon Jones, etc...awesome, awesome festival. The hike up and down to the main amphitheater and the stages at the top was a killer, though. My calves are STILL burning.

Got the pleasure of catching The Avett Brothers last night, and not being very familiar with their stuff I was really really impressed, great set. I actually preferred this set to MMJ's at the same venue a few weeks ago. Shame was the perfect opening song.

Yea, they are freaking awesome...they're playing a show here in NC on Halloween that I'm planning to go to.

Got the poster though:
Letseeee where to start....First off, the Greek Theatre is one of the coolest venues I've ever been too, not really a bad seat in the entire house, and the sound is so pristine, such a rarity in most other venues. Our seats could not have been better, 10th row, dead center, but I guess thats what 180 bucks gets you. The crowd....well, its LA, there were MORE than plenty of people who were there, just to be "seen", then there were the people who were there to find out what "this MMJ band is all about", and finally there were the diehards, who like myself got a bit annoyed with the endless chatter of these socialite wannabes. Strum, if you find an audience recording, I would halfway expect to hear people shhhhhh-ing the chatter, because seemingly every quiet part you heard it. Also every song that started off slower or was slower, or had a slower jam, specifically "I Will Sing You Songs" "Dondante", everyone wanted to sit, FU*CK THAT, this is My Morning Jacket people! You stand, and you stand for the entire 2 hour and 45 minute performance. You aren't even allowed to go pee. No peeing! Okay, on to the performance, I was completely corned out of my head, and continued to nom through out the show, "sharing is caring" was the theme of the night, we had awesome neighbors who loved to share. Any event staff was pretty much non-existent. Okay, the show...
Opened with the first two tracks off "Evil Urges", really dug them both, Jim came out with the cape on, and shed it about half way through "Evil Urges". Very cool. Things really got started for me though, when I first heard those little drum machine beats, and you KNOW its going right into "Off The Record" Absolutely stunning, it felt like they jammed this song for at least 9-10 minutes. Glorious. So, following that, they went right into "Anytime" without stopping from the previous jam. I don't know if anyone else out there has a self-proclaimed "happy song", but just to let you know, "Anytime" is mine. Every single time I hear this song, I am instantly transformed into the happiest person ever. I stood there jamming out with the boys, grinning ear-to-ear. My GF Steph kept saying after we left, that I didn't stop smiling the entire show. Jim was hiding behind his cape for this song, kind of like a vampire, all you could see was his eyes. Next up was "I'm Amazed", it is definitely one of the best new songs live, the short solo/jam at the end of it is priceless. "The Way That He Sings" is another personal favorite, the opening guitar riff is what this band is made of: Pure, straight-up, rock goodness. After that they went into what I dubbed "The Prom Night Set": Two Halves, Thank You Too, Sec Walkin' These songs are fantastic live, I just kept smiling and loving it, I told Steph during each one that I felt like I was at a Prom like in "Back to the Future". She was laughing and dancing so much, it was awesome. Welllllll, after that started the "meat & potatoes" part of the set: "I Will Sing You Songs" had me near tears, the joy I felt from Jim and the boys pouring every bit of passion and enthusiasm into this song is breathtaking. I don't think I've ever been that "locked-in" to a song ever, it builds and builds. Wow. "What A Wonderful Man", what can be said about this song that hasn't been already said before? So effing fun to sing along with, and the first jam/breakdown of that song is seemingly getting better/harder as the more they play it live, and let it take on a life of its own. "Mahgeetah" owns my life, this ten minute plus jam, had me dancing, jumping, singing, and finally lost in the psych/prog jam at the end. It went perfectly right into an super-heady version of "Lay Low". The dueling guitars at the end...OH-MY-GOD! "Phone Went West" Wow! Highlight for sure. It totally blindsided me, this song has such an awesome reggae jam/vibe to it. I really didn't really realize how many of their songs incorporate a ton of reggae influence. "Tell me I'm wrong, tell me I'm right, tell me there's nobody else in the world!" Such a stunner to dance to with the GF. Love Phone Went West.
"Gideon" was awesome as always, but not until it was over did I realize exactly what Strum was saying. "Just wait till you hear those first little drum beats....." DONDANTE! Oh my god, can this song seriously be anymore badass? Jim had a towel on his head and stood at the mic stand to the right, with the stage completely black except a purple light that was shining directly behind him, and somehow, someway was inadvertently pointed directly at my face. I felt like I was in the movie the "Stoned Age" when the guy is talking about being at the Blue Oyster Cult show and having the lazer pointed at him during "Dont Fear the Reaper" (Sam, you know what I'm talking about, sorrrry for the tangent guys..Hilarious". This song is so brutally emotional loud live, I want this played at my funeral. Steph was completely overjoyed at "Librarian", its her favorite new song. She questioned it even being played live last night, and I kept telling her: "good things come to those that wait" I heard them tuning the guitar, and knew it was up. Steph freaked. Such a great display of true songwriting, and using that to tell an awesome story. Love it. Sooooo, "Smokin' From Shootin" was my favorite when I first heard "Evil Urges", and now I remember why: This song is the JAM. You hear Bo start that little sample at the beginning, and it gives you chills when the Carl brings in the lap steel. "Dooooo yoooou see myyyyyy smokin' guns yeaaaahhh!" Smiles from ear to ear. Okay, so in LA, the radio out here plays two songs by MMJ, the first being "Touch Me Pt.2" (Highly Suspicious being the 2nd) The crowd reaction to this song was immense, they brought out a little pedestal with Jim's omnichord on it, and the dance party began. How freaking awesome is this song live? Geez! At the end it faded to black with just Jim lit as he toyed around with some randomness. Carl and Two-Tone were all crouched down low, and as it ended with "Good Intentions", they bolted off the stage. Standing ovation ensued as they prepared for the encore.
The encore was almost obvious as we hadn't gotten to hear some of the staples yet. First was "Golden", then "Wordless Chorus". During the latter some drunk jackass decided he had had enough of the endless chatter of the "cool kids" and thought it was a great idea to turn around an yell at the top of his lungs: "Will you people just SHUT-THE-FU-CK-UP?!" While I enjoyed the fact that not one person spoke another word till the show was over, it was a buzz-kill of sorts, seeing as it was a bit unnecessary. So with the buzz-kill I decided it was time for some more nommin'....the buzz was back! "Highly Suspicious" was next, awesome awesome song live, the falsetto, the crunchy-ness of the guitar, pure bliss. And the guitar at the end translates so fantastic live, the crowd looooooved it. (considering to more than half of them it was one of the two songs they knew...geez, expand your mind people!) Jim did multiple stage slides to the end of this song, so awesome. What happened next was pretty much what any diehard MMJ fan waits for: "Run Thru" I don't think there are enough words to define what an beautiful display of passion that this song encompasses. At that point, the show could have been over, I could have died, they could have walked right off the stage, and I was satisfied. Buuuuuuuuuut.....you know they didn't, because its never over until that one song that completely defines this band, is played. "One Big Holiday" is the song that if someone asks me: "What's your favorite song?" The first thing that usually comes to mind is this song. IMO, no song rocks as hard as this song, this song (again IMO) defines what rock music is all about, and is a blatant three word summary of the way we should all live our lives like: ONE BIG HOLIDAY. ;D
That really sucked that Gogol Bordello and The Mars Volta played on the same night. I obviously picked The Mars Volta and was once again blown away by them. They know how to put on a show.
I saw Gogol at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta last night. Crazy Show!!
Heeeeeey a fellow 'Rooian was there with me!! Awesome!! That show was AMAZING!!! They NEVER disappoint...I loved it! Where were you in the crowd? I started about 8ft. from the stage, dead center, moved back to about 15 ft out, still in the middle, and finally got in the mosh pit during the encores and wound up 2-3 ft. back and a little right of center. Pedro doused me w/ water, and Eugene spilled wine on me. It was great.
Then I got everyone to autograph my set-list after the show...here are some pics...
Eugene and me...he was a cool guy. Actually very soft spoken after the show.
And Pam...aka the woman who crowd surfs on a base drum, aka one of the most badass chicks in music today.
Aaaaand some other dude who was backstage. I have no idea who he is, but everyone else was getting their picture with him...so I figured why not! ;D

You lucky quacker! I'm so jealous! How did you get to meet Gogol? Seems like an incredible night.
P.S. Could that be Elijah Wood?
Hmm...I suppose it COULD be...
But seriously, as much as I would like to have a cool story involving sneaking on a tour bus, or somehow saving a band members life, all I really did was slip out the side door of the venue to where the tour buses were, before security cleared everyone out of the building. A few other people followed me, and we all just waited around until the band came out. It was really chill...they were all perfectly happy to talk and take pictures, sign stuff etc. etc. Very, very cool. They clearly have a VERY high appreciation for their fans.

Wow, sounds like a damn good time at the Variety Playhouse. I love that venue so much. One of my favs in Atlanta and its cool to hear all about the Gogol show.

I was definitely right in front of you. I remember seeing that bonnaroo shirt behind me and I was wondering if you were on Inforoo...haha. I was wearing an Aflac shirt. The show was absolutely amazing!!! Eugene and Co. never seem to disappoint. By the way, how long did you wait after the show to get those pics? I would have stayed, but i had to drive back home and wake up early for work.

Haha...I ALMOST wore an InfoRoo t-shirt instead! Small world! And we left the parking-lot @ 1:00 so I guess we waited an hour and a bit. The band came out one person at a time, Tommy was out almost immediately, and Eugene by about 12:15. Me and like three other people waited around for Pam who was last out, talked to her an Elijah for a few, then everyone headed home. Totally worth the extra hour and a half!!

More than one! We (me and Josh, who used to post on here as OatmealSchnapps) were at the very front on the first riser/platform area on the left side. Did you guys see the guy who was going through the audience rubbing people?
This guy:
(I'd post more of my pics, but my camera's pretty crappy, so we didn't get too many clear ones!
We debated about whether to go to Gogol or The Mars Volta, but when we left the show, we were definitely happy with our choice! So much fun! My calves are still sore from all the jumping up and down!

Sorry for the double post, but in other recent good show news:
We saw David Byrne at Chastain in Atlanta. We missed him at Roo '04, and again when he toured in '05, so this was a really big deal for us because he is one of my top five favorite musicians. I love Chastain, but we were a little worried because a lot of the audience at Chastain shows really just comes to picnic and socialize, but the audience for this show was extremely enthusiastic! (he even said in his blog: "We’d been warned it might be a picnic crowd that would view the musical acts as background for their Southern social get-together. That proved not to be the case though. By the second song, some audience members were up and dancing. And by the end, the audience, on their feet, demanded a 3rd encore.") He did many of the songs of the new Byrne/Eno album, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, with a couple of songs off of My Life In the Bush Of Ghosts, and a few Talking Heads songs, as well. My favorite moment of the night was when they did Heaven. I very nearly cried I was so happy.
Anyway, we got a couple of decent pics at that one:
