I've seen them once before. Wasn't my thing but I'm sure you will enjoy it. Even though I didn't enjoy it a lot I can still admit that it was a pretty good show. I saw them at Big Summer Classic so they didn't get a long set and I was really there for a few of the other bands so I didn't really get close and pay attention to the set. It just drives me absolutely nuts that Micheal Franti needs to yell "how ya feelin" about 70 times a show. It's actually become a pretty popular drinking game. Take a sip everytime Franti yells "How ya feelin" and you will be hammered in no time. The thing I really liked was the cover they did of Sublime. I can't remember which tune it was though. I'm sure you will have a good time though.
When I saw them, I thought it was an excellent show. Franti and Spearhead really know how to get the crowd into the show. I don't think I stopped moving the whole set. You'll love them. Hopefully they come to the 'roo this time around. '03 was the last time they were there.
I knew nothing of Michael Franti when I caught his Bonnaroo '03 set. It was absolutely amazing. One of the highlights of that year for me (the war had just started and he was the only artist there who I heard acknowledge it). Its easy to write a "The Iraq War Sucks" song in 2006, but there weren't a whole lot of people writing them in the Spring of '03.
I've picked up his whole catalogue and was even a street-teamer for a while since. I haven't managed to see him again, but you won't be dissappointed. The Everyone Deserves Music album is my favorite.

That was the first and only time I saw them as well. Everyone in the crowd was so into it. I've always wanted to catch them again.
Well, we just got back from ATL where we went to see Franti last night..
Boy oh boy, where do I start?? That was on helluva a freakin show!
I tell you, I am 34 years old and have been going to cocerts since I was 12. I have seen some of the biggest acts in the world in every genre imaginable, and that show last night was firmly in my top 3 of all time. It really was that good!
The venue was the Variety Playhouse in Little 5 Points. Capacity sign on the wall said 816, and the marquee showed Sold Out, and it was full.
When you went into the auditorium it was like an old movie theatre, it even had a balcony!
We sat about mid way back and you could see the band and the stage perfectly. It was a very intimate setting and Frantis rapport with the crowd was outstanding. They all looked like they were having a great time, and everyone else in the room certainly was.
The kept the crowd on thier feet and moving all night! At one point he brought a couple up on stage out of the crowd during a slow song and let the guy propose to his gf. She accepted.
All during the show, right down in front of the stage was a guy who had a little girl on his shoulders. She couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 yo.
Right at the end of the main set before the encore break, they did "Everybody ona move" and he picked that little girl up and brought her up on stage and had her singing and dancing. It was the cutest thing. Franti would sing "everybody ona move" and the girl would do the "La la la".
The he got her singing the " I like my bas loudy, loudy, louder" part. She was good too, right in time.
Somehting else. Micheal Franti is a freaking presence! Hes like 6' 6" and when he spread out his arms, it looks like they reach all the way across the stage.
It was an incredible experience to say the least. I cant wait to see them again at roo, but I am afraid it wont stand up to this one! This was one of those rare times when the mood, setting, and vibe all hit just right!
BTW If anyone is in the ATL area, check out the Variety Playhouse. The night before they had MM&W, and tonight they have P. Groove..

people have been telling me to check them out for a few years and I had the chance to go see them in Denver at the fillmore auditorium in October and wow....i was blown away. I really had no idea what to expect and was not even prepared for the energy of the crowd. I was standing right up front for most of the show but nature called and I had to make my way out of the jam packed crowd, but still was able to enjoy it and dance all night long from the back. I'm seeing them in a month at the Copper Mountain Sunsation festival and can't wait! Have a great time!
still no luck on your show dmbfan. but heres the langerado one. what a freeking show!!! i am so excited to be seeing him this summer. i will not miss another langerado. the sublime what i got>sesame street>what i got it sounded like it would have been so much fun!!! damn i wish i had went.
i was just reading some comments about langerado and apparently franti was roaming the grounds in a golf cart dressed in drag. i cant imagine how crazy it must have looked for that giant dude to be dressed in drag and crammed into a gofl cart!! sounds like goodtimes!! damn i wish i had gone.. next year!
That would have been too cool! I would have LOVED to gone to Langerado, but it just isn't in the budget this year. I am going to Camp Reggae on Mem Day weekend, roo of course and I am trying to hit All Good and Vegoose. Maybe next year Langerado will be in the plans.
I am more pumped for Franti at roo now after the show the other night and the Langerado set. That is a great download there dude, thanks for pointing that out. I haven't had the chance to search etree much lately...
Since seeing them at Bluesfest in Ottawa (July 2006) and meeting the great Mr. Michael Franti, introducing myself and all the kids who were with us to him I can say he is graceful and has a peaceful and very approachable presence. I saw him playing soccer behind the trailers at BLuesfest which is an area you aren't really able to get into but you can see with no problem. After all of us standing there for a few minutes I knew he probably wouldn't walk over so I spoke out "My Franti, Can you come over to meet these girls? (The one little girl My Best Friends Daughter is in love with Franti and she is only 7 years old) thats when I snapped a bunch of pics of him and he was gracious and wonderful. So a few months later I decided after getting off a plane in Toronto from a week in the Caribbean that I would catch his Montreal show in November. That show was no disappointment at all. Before the show began I had 5 pics blown up of Michael when I met him in Ottawa (July), I begged the security guard to get him to get them signed (I had just seen Frant walk straight through the crowd from the front entrance!!! Noone had noticed except me and I yelled out to Husband and friends "Theres Franti!!!" they all said, "No that can't be him" Guess who had the last laugh, Me!! It was Franti...... Anyhow, the guard He refused saying the backstage was a crazy house. The show was incredible and Franti also sung "C is for Cookie" Sesame Street..... the music was absolutely amazing..... After the show Franti walked off stage and hugged everyone who wanted to wait for him. I WAITED....... and hugged too! (I think my husband wanted a hug but he is pretty shy!!I told Franti that these pics I had werre also for a little girl he met in Ottawa, and she really wanted a pic. Then I gave his manager the pics and she took them with her and Franti to the back. I'm sure Franti thought someone would have to peel me off him from the tight grip I held. The security guards told me after waiting about 20 minutes for the pics that I'd have to leave because the bar had emptied. I told him I wasn't leaving without the pics and sure enough, not 2 minutes later the woman who originally took them came back to me saying "I bet you didn't think you'd see me again" I've never been more in awe of a Peacemaker, Port or songwriter. I find he gets his inspiration from Marley and Lennon. After that show I almost caught a plane to Philidelphia. Came to my senses and have waited until I see him in Bonnaroo and hopefully again in Ottawa for Bluesfest. If you ever have a chance to see Franti, I suggest you don't wait.... Buy that ticket and an extra one for me. ;D
Another great download if you ever find it is the Alaska concert he did in I believe 2003. He finishes the start of Never too Late and then promptly into Everybody on Da Move......

I saw him last Friday here in DC at the 9:30 club, it was all I expected and more, high energy the whole time, we were up near the front, and had no choice but to jump along with everyone else the whole show. He was doing an acoustic show nearby afterward as a benefit for Iraq Veterans Against the War, but I didn't make it over there. The only negative thing I can see, is that I expect a very similar show at Roo, so I may not go to check him out again. I have been spoiled by Jam shows with the rotating setlists, and I don't think spearhead has enough albums out to really have that much of a varied show anyway.
Ok I don't want to come off sounding bias to Franti or like a Franti Stalker, but I saw him in July, then November. The set lists changed around greatly, and the style of the music, different people getting on stage with him to perform did add spice and flavour. He is definitely worthy of seeing again. I know while on tour yes shows with ANY band can become mundane but Franti always changes it up because he adds people each time from other bands, and with 5+ albums he's done so far and thats not to mention his old hip hop days I think he can add to any concert. So I beg to differ with you on that aspect but at a festival, things change because they aren't out on the road promoting the tour or newest album, they are there to have fun and JAM with the rest of us. Franti is a from what I understand well versed on the whole jam scene so I think he would have a great appreciation for changing his stuff up. So I bed to differ slightly, but I believe differently. I hope you don't prove me wrong! YIKES! ;D
Augustwest- I almost forgot something. You were on one of his tour shows....... DOH!!!!!
Of course most of the stuff he played was on the album he just finished. I saw him at like I said "Ottawa Bluesfest" and the music totally ranged from the first album and I believe one really rap sounding song, to the newest Yell Fire.
I totally agree with you on tour performances but think you may be pleasently surprised if you watch him at Bonnaroo.
i am excited for roo. i think it will be a way different show because i expect some guests. hopefull harper. or john butler. either or both would make me very very happy. and i fully expect to see franti come out with keller. cant wait!!!!
hey everybody! i've just discovered Franti and am in love:) he's amazing!!! i can't wait to see him live! just wondering what are some of your favorites.....i've got to catch up:)
