10 years ago today I left Murfreesboro, TN to drive to Noblesville, IN to see my first Phish show. My roommate Chad had been slowly exposing me to Phish for a few months prior and then asked if I wanted to make a road trip to see them. I agreed and off we went with no tickets and only a campsite reservation. We arrived at the campsite, unloaded our gear, and drove back out to the Interstate where we had seen some guys with tickets for sale. Rolled up to a guy and got a pair of mail order tickets for $50 a piece. We were tripping over how cool the tix looked that we didn't bother to check the dates until we had drove onto the site of Deer Creek Music Center. The tix were for the Monday night show the next night. Chad said don't worry we'll find some for that night before the show starts.
It's hard to describe the feeling I got when we parked and got out of the car. At that point I was the veteran of many concerts, but I knew I was in for something completely different that night. As we walked towards the gates, Chad told me to point one finger into the air as we walked around as this would indicate to everyone that I was looking for a ticket. As we got near the front gates I realized that every other person I saw also had a finger in the air. Needless to say I began to worry.
After about an hour I tell Chad that we are not going to get in, but at least we have tix for the following night. He once again tells me not to worry and says,"Let's go over to the back entrance." I'm up for anything at this point and we head around the hill towards the back side. There are far fewer people sitting around here, so my hopes do not rise at all, when I see a couple of kids sitting in a group flash a ticket at a guy walking towards us. I see the guy keep walking, so I grab Chad and we walk over to these kids. I asked if their tickets are for tonights show, and when they say yes I ask what they want for them. The kid says he really would like to trade for some tix for later on that tour (Syracuse I think). I tell him I can't help him there, but I would be happy to pay him $150 bucks for the pair. He said sure, we made the transaction, and I was off to see a show that would change the way I looked at live music forever.
The show was great and as we left in a daze, I commented to Chad that walking through the parking lot felt like I was walking through a Middle Eastern marketplace. The thing that sticks with me to this day over any other is the smell. The smell of patchouli takes me back to that night every time I smell it. It's hard to believe it has been a decade since that night, but I can't give enough thanks to Trey, Mike, Page, Fish, and the coolest roommate I have ever had to opening my eyes to what really good music is all about.
For me it was my brother who had been on tour with Phish a couple of times and then they played Charlotte. He said, "Sister, you HAVE to go" So I did. It was the first time in my life that I actually felt like I belonged to peer group. These were MY people.
I've never looked at ANYTHING the same way.
On etree there is a guy putting up 10 year anniversary shows. So far I have completed July of 97. Looking forward to the Great Went. While compiling all of this it reminded me how special that bunch of goofballs was... IS. Whatever happens in my whole life I will look back on the times I spent at those shows as several of the most magical moments of my life. I came back from the mellinium concert at Big Cypress a completely different person, a better person, happier, self confident, and at peace. That's what epic music and truly good people will do for ya.
I saw the 10 year anniversary shows on etree which is why I realized it had been 10 years. Downloading 8/11/97 right now which completes my personal collection of shows I saw. Now I can expand to shows I wish I saw like Big Cypress. Had to miss that one to spend the holidays with my family. One of the biggest regrets of my life...

That is exactly how I felt at my first Dead show and then at my first Phish show. Like this is my home and these are people that get me and have the same passion for music that I do
Big Cypress was one of those events that I will never forget. I took my daughter, who was about 8 at the time and she still talks about it, the people she met, etc. It was just an amazing time.
Thankfully Bonnaroo is about as close as you can get to that feeling, so I am thrilled I live an hour away and always plan on going.
