Taking a break from the linup discussions - from atease:
EMI are set to release a Radiohead Greatest Hits album to coincide with Radiohead’s upcoming tour. Radiohead’s former label seem determined to make some money from the band’s current activities.
When Radiohead announced the release of their ‘In Rainbows’ Discbox in December, EMI quickly followed with the release of the 7 albums (6 studio, 1 live) as a box set which included the albums as digipacks, download and USB-stick.
Now the tour is coming up (North American dates are expected to be announced next week), EMI have got another release up their sleeves; the long feared Greatest Hits album. Ed O’Brien told Strombo [laughing]: “They’re planning to do a Greatest Hits for April, May to coincide with our tour. That’s an interesting one. We won’t be doing any promotion for that, obviously.”
In an interview with Analogue, Phil Selway quickly commented on a Greatest Hits album as well: “It’s well within their rights to do it. [sigh]. So we’ll have to see.”
i don't see what is so wrong with a greatest hits album. they're pretty much harmless. i'm excited for the tour dates though, can't wait to see them again.

Nothing wrong if the band is in agreement, but in this case its just an attempt from EMI to drain every last drop from the well....

whats harmful about a record label picking out Greatest Hits is that who is to say what songs are the "greatest" and what makes one song a "hit"? EMI is doing nothing but trying to make a buck off of an artist.

but doesn't the band get money from it too? i'm sure they won't complain about that.
I see nothing wrong with that... Radiohead got paid by the lable. The lable took a chance on them....
and the logic of "No one can say what a "hit" is" and "No one knows what's the greatest"...
Its pretty simple. A hit is a popular song. The greatest hits are the most popular song.
Its not like the collection is called "The best songs this band will ever do"
The lable paid the band, they took the chance, and damn right they want to make their profit off of it. Thats the business. Thats what the band signed up for.
There's a lot of people out there looking to get into a little Radiohead or only like a few songs they caught on the radio. This serves as a good outlet for them.
Its a product. Nothing more, nothing less. And its well within the contract that RADIOHEAD signed.

Not that I necessarily disagree with any of that, except maybe the part about it not being anything but a product, but how do you know what's in their contract?
It's just the simple fact that EMI keeps putting out Radiohead products after the fact, with absolutely no consultation with the band. Kinda lame.
The Radiohead tour is one of the reasons I won't be at Bonnaroo this year. I'm gonna follow the boys around for a few shows instead. Can't wait for these dates.
