We won't be getting married for a while, but I'm already thinking about the most important part, the music! (Food, being the second most important part)
I'm looking for suggestions for wedding songs from you music savvy bonnaroovians. I do not want to play stereotypical crap at my wedding, that means no YMCA and no Brown-Eyed Girl (nothing against Van Morrison, but he has plenty of other material that would be wedding worthy) I want fresh stuff.
So, please suggest both reception music that folks can dance too and love-dovey songs for the ceremony.
Songs under consideration:
First Day of My Life - Bright Eyes If Not for You - Bob Dylan Better Together - Jack Johnson It Beats for You - My Morning Jacket All The Right Reasons - The Jayhawks
Definite Reception Song: Hello City - Barenaked Ladies (personal reasons)
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
Good Topic. Me and my lady are getting married in August on the beach and are doing the same thing. She already has the ceremony music planned out, which is going to be She's a rainbow by the Stones, and Thank you by Zeppellin.
I am pretty sure that we are doing the first dance to Lamb - Gold (check out that song, good stuff for a wedding, there are various mixes though)
I know that we also want to play Pacific Theme - Broken Social Scene (even though the wedding is in the Atlantic) during the food part of the reception. And for ish and giggles we were going to play Total Eclipse of the Heart, but the Dan Band version.
We figured that we were going to have about three or four playlists as the reception goes on that get progressively more upbeat, so that by the end of the reception we will have some Beck, Herbaliser, more Stones and Zep, maybe some Pixies, a little hip-hop. I hope that I can trust our "music" guy to get this all situated.
Anyways, enough about my semi-poorly thought out ideas (still have 8 months to get my ish together), I like the other ideas posted and I have to check out some of the songs that I dont know already.
He he, I think I've got my fiance convinced that he won't be able to be in the wedding, play dj, and cater the reception. He doesn't like leaving things to other people. I think we'll make mix CD's or a playlist on the Ipod.
I'll check out some of your suggestions, atl3103. Good luck with your wedding! On a beach, that's nice. Ours will be in our backyard.
I can totally see walking down the aisle to the Ben Harper song though...
I am glad that you brought up mix CDs because I was just going to do a couple of ipod playlists, but I think that a few mix cds would be a good back-up plan, just in case the hotel does not have all the hook-ups. I can't imagine anything worse than a music-less reception. Well, a dry reception kinda sucks too.
Oh you know... we'll set date at some point... We've got to get our house fixed up and move into it. Then he's got to get his recording studio started. I'm trying to get into a nursing program...
It's kinda last on the list right now. Part of me just wants to skip the whole thing and go straight to being married, but how many times in your life do you get to party like that? So we'll wait it out.
I just get to thinking about stuff once in a while to tide me over. By the time we actually have a wedding, I should have every little detail ironed out in my head.
What sort of dress is your fiance wearing? I've browsed for dresses and I've found a nice one for my bridesmaids, www.rawganique.com/Wssd1.htm , but nothing yet for me. I want something gauze or hemp with a simple flowing design.
Well, getting off-topic now! On with the music suggestions.
We did The Luckiest by Ben Folds, Do You Realize by The Flaming Lips, Such Great Heights by Iron & Wine, and I walked down the aisle to Baby I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney. We had a couple more songs in there but I can't remember what they were.
We played Songbird by Fleetwood Mac instead of the traditional Wedding March. Also fit in an instrumental of Friend of the Devil.....it was the only way my wife would let me play it!!

I think that my girl is checking out some stores in Atlanta, which are discount type stores. If you live nearby, I can shoot you over the names of the stores. I am not sure what she is doing for bridesmaids either. I am just happy that I am pulling a nice shirt and pants for this thing and I dont have to go tuxedo-style on the Beach in the middle of August.

haha, i was just gonna say ben folds, the luckiest. good call! I'm sure i can think of several more but i gotta go try on bridesmaid dresses, dad's gettin' married!
My buddy did the Luckiest for his. Since I'm going through the marriage stuff now I've been looking. My lady and I's song is Collide by Howie Day so that will be our first dance. Our last dance will be Happy Ever After by Ben Haper and Beloved One will be played as well. I'm looking for a good tune to dance with my Mom to. Since my Mom and I have a interesting relationship (Not bad just goofy) I'm hoping to find one that fits. Were getting hitched in July of next year so we have some time to think about it.
Ooo, I don't know if I can do the chicken dance. I mean, I know what you're saying... but I am trying to steer clear of all cliche wedding reception songs. This includes YMCA, The Electric Slide, Brown-Eyed Girl and (egads!) The Macarana. The Chicken Dance cannot be excluded from that. However, the Hokey Pokey may have a similiar result and I've never heard that played at a reception.
Having never bought the album that it is on, I had never heard The Luckiest. Upon downloading it, it is definitely in the running. There's some others on here that I haven't heard of and will have to listen to.
I want to find something to play to honor our family members that are no longer with us to enjoy the reception... perhaps Hummingbird by Wilco...
The version of the Hokey Pokey they used to play at the skating rink was quit hilarious. Of course, everyone was in skates so to shake your "whole self" you had to lie on the floor. At least that was the expected way of doing it. I'll have to call the skating rink and ask them what version they play. That could lead to drunken hilarity.
depeche mode "somebody" (this one describes marriage perfectly ..just listen to it!) andddddd well this is the song i want for the actual wedding jeff beck "amazing grace" ...brings chills everytime!
congrats on the wedding and i hope these songs helped!!
I'm thinking of "High Tide, Low Tide" for the song where I dance with my mom. I've found several different versions Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley and the Ben Harper and Jack Johnson version. Does anyone know of any others? I'm trying to find the best sounding version of the tune.

We used Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime" as a tongue-in-cheek recessional ("You may say to yourself, My God! What have I done."). That was in '87 (which I guess means I have a big anniversary coming up).
I always wanted to walk down the aisle to "A Few Hours After This" by the Cure. Even though the lyrics aren't fit for a wedding, I still think they're sweet, and the music is very march-like.
I got married at a Renaissance Festival, so Irish minstrels were more appropriate.
EDIT: btw, i'm unmarried now. So, no, biglou is not my 'mister'.
