Figured I'd let everyone know its out there floating through the intratubes.
Off that bat I'll say I grew up a huge NIN fan (like most in my age group). Like alot of fans I was severely disappointed in June of 2005 when I first listened to "With Teeth". I don't think I've ever been able to fully articulate my distaste for that album.
Which brings us to the present. Roughly a month ago upon listening to "My Violent Heart" I thought to myself, "well this seems promising". I had heard all this noise about "Trent returning to his industrial roots". Honestly, he never really left those "roots". In my opinion he just fell off a little.
I'm not going to review the entire disc, just some things that grab me.
1) HYPERPOWER!- This is the NIN sound I grew up with. Great "intro" track to the album. Sounds tough as steel.
4) The Good Soldier- How many times can Trent use this vocal melody? In my experiences, any NIN tune that comes in with a bass line turns out to be worthwhile.
5) Vessel- One of those tracks were you can just picture Trent tearing apart an iso booth while recording.
7) Capital G- Appears to be a song about our leader and chief G.W. Song contains some real heavy lyrics from Trent. I dislike the guy as much as the next person, but all the G.W bashing in the artist community got real old, real quick. Trent pulls it off nicely.
9) The Warning- Hey now AcidPro. Good too see Trent move the guitar work on his albums in a slightly different directions. Still very distinguishable, but its not the same old trademarked NIN sound.
I'm going to go enjoy the rain we're getting, and the rest of my spring break. If I get boreD latEr I'll post MOre. NOw I'm Done. Yes, I'm one bad demonoid. If you still don't get it, PM me for a link. Should be everywhere by now though.

I think Survivalism is a good track too - but My Violent Heart is better IMHO.
Check out the Saul Williams remix of Survivalism on his myspace.
I had heard about that. Haven't had a chance to check it out yet. I've always ridden the fence with Saul. Some of his stuff I thoroughly enjoy, some of it I poopoo on. I got a chance to meet him a while back through some bands I used to work with. He is a very well spoken man and carries on great conversation. Unfortunately he wouldn't answer many of my questions on TMV.
Survivalism is one of those tunes that just grew on me the more I listened to it. Always nice to see Trent throw around new ideas. He re-uses tons of his vocal melodies, nice to see him go out on an artistic limb occasionally.

Listening to it for the first time now. Capital G is awesome!!! Give it to em Trent. YEAH!!! ;D
Yeah, I'm pretty happy with it right now.
Everybody I've talked to today is really excited about it because I'm enjoying it. I tore With Teeth to pieces for a while because it really let me down.

I LOVE Capitol G- I can't stop listening to the new album... I'm starting to feel like it is the perfect mesh between Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral and With Teeth...

This album is reaalllllly growing on me the more i listen to it. I actually liked With Teeth, but i had to approach without expecting anything, or else you'll probably hate it. This is one of the best of 07', captiol g is awesome.
I've only listened to it twice the whole way through, but so far, I love it. And seeing as though Nine inch Nails is my all time favorite band, I have an ability of accurate first listen impressions. Can't give it a review yet or a grade of sorts, because I've yet to learn every measure and note of the album, but I'll list how this one ranks for me right now:
1. Fragile (forever and neverending) ( 100/5) 2. Downward Spiral (5/5) 3. Broken (5/5) 4. Year Zero 5. Pretty Hate Machine( 4.5/5 6. With Teeth (and I love With Teeth, a solid 3.5 out of 5.)
So I guess you could say I'm alil bias,.
Favourite tracks or early listen: My Violent Heart HYPERPOWER! (damn what a hot track) The Good Soldier The Great Destroyer Vessel
i guess i had a different initial response. I thought it was overproduced and sounded like garbled noise. i think a few tracks might translate well into a live set though...
that said, there is very little going on in the industrial music scene im finding very interesting right now...even the new skinny puppy didnt really light my fire (although, i havent read any reviews of it, so i dont know what people are thinking - maybe everyone else thought it was meh too).
im looking forward to a new manson album - although the last one was pretty crap. and a manson / slayer tour....

I've listened once so far and my initial reaction is that I like it. Some of the tracks are very much the same sound that I first loved about them so many years ago. I need to listen more
Manson hasn't had a decent album since Mechanical Animals. And I have the new SP album, listen to it every now and then, and I like it, it's not a classic, but it's definatley their best since Last Rights. Those are the only 2 industrial bands i still listen to (that put out new music, and NIN can hardly be called industrial)

His new single is out on the net, Im almost afraid to listen.
Over the years Manson has had brief stints of genius, but he's really gone downhill. I must say though, the title track from Golden Age Of Grotesque still gets me every time.

I still think that the best Manson track is "May Cause Discoloration Of Urine And Feces." That is just hilarious... and disturbing... And it's not even a song. I'll defend Manson, if it comes time to, I liked Portrait of An American Family was alright, had a cool concept with the children's cartoon/television on acid thing. Anti-Christ Superstar is a classic, maybe not for the musical content, but because of the impact it had on pop culture, and I love Mechanical Animals, my favourite album of his hands down.

I'm the same way. Most of my close friends have (roughly) the same taste in music as me, and we've had this discussion before. They don't understand how I ever enjoyed his music, but that was mainly due to the fact that they never really listened to much of it. To this day I can still throw on Portrait and enjoy it thoroughly. Besides that, he has some degree of artistic merit. In recent years I have enjoyed some of the artwork that he's put out, and the short film he put out with GAOG was very interesting. To each his own I guess.
He did however let me down greatly once. When I was younger I had great interest in seeing him live as I'd heard many bootlegs and he really sounded like a great performer. Big let down when it actually came time to see him. He was worn out from drinking absinthe all tour and sounded like muddled sh*t the entire set. I wound up leaving early to beat traffic.

Though Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero is now in stores, the mysterious Web sites surrounding the record continue to evolve. Earlier this week, about 50 Los Angeles area NIN fans were gathered for a "private resistance meeting"...and a free mini-concert from the band. According to various fan sites, the group was taken into a warehouse where they were surprised by Trent Reznor and his bandmates and treated to a six-song set. As NIN began a seventh song, a group of "SWAT troops" busted the show and broke it up. And the guerrilla marketing continues...
^ What can I say, this new album is all the rave now, the reviews are for the most part overwhelmingly positive, and the marketing is something I've never seen before. And to think that this is the foundation for a whole new set of work to create a "musical fantasy world." I love everything that is being done right now envolving this.
I bought this yesterday and had my first listen. I grew from like to absolutely love as I listened to With Teeth, so perhaps I need to do this with Year Zero. It seems a lot more wierd techno than With Teeth, somehow I'm missing the grittiness. I did like Survivalism a lot when I heard it. Raw, tough, you feel it. I'm not feeling a lot of the rest.
So I'm going to have to listen more. Or go buy the NIN albums I missed out on in Jr. High.

i thought it was a pretty cool idea the the cd changes colors. at first i didn't get it but then was listening to in this twilight and the lyrics say "all the black is really white" and the cd changes from black to white from heat...freaked me out the first time i noticed it, i thought i was hallucinating
I first listened to this on my home speakers. I didn't like it so much from there. But on headphones the album seems much different for me. I do believe Trent may consider this on his albums. It's harder to pick up on the messages of the songs when you do not listen with headphones. At least for me. Headphones are a more personal way for people to hear music.
I'll have to try the cd for the color changing. Not sure how I can though heh.
