I disagree- the songs are not good. By all means, the album is better than I would have expected, however it feels very empty. I think Pitchfork got it right by pointing out that the heavy arena rock SP cultivated was just one of the many alluring sounds, and so an album that ignores those others plays narrowly of course feels limited. I'll say this: hearing this attempt at SP helped me remember what absolute masterpieces "Siamese Dream" and "Mellon Collie..." were.

I gotta say it's better than I expected, but still falls far short of the pumpkins' former glory. I found myself getting really bored with it about halfway through, and I agree w/ dogfighter that the mixing sounds pretty bad (way too compressed to my ears). I also miss James and Darcy's vocal harmonies. and What's up with that song that sounds just like 1979? (I'm at work right now and can't remember the exact song title.)
Bottom line: even though Zeitgeist is better than anything the Chili Peppers have released lately, the Pumpkins still hold the title of farthest fall from greatness in the 90s rock catagory.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

Neverlost?
I personally love the disc. I think it's great. I agree that it's no Siamese Dream, Gish, or Mellon Collie, but it's pretty damn good if you ask me. I guess I just have a hard-on for Billy, b/c I've enjoyed most of what he has released, aside from his solo disc.
But that being said, I have to admit that it sounds ALOT like Zwan in style and execution. It's very heavy on the guitar, and the vocal execution is very similar as well. The song structures seem to be similar as well.
But, that being said, I really like the Zwan album (Mary Star of the Sea), and still listen to it alot. I think it's pretty good. It's a bit poppy for Billy, but this album, Zeitgeist, gives me the same impression. It's almost like grunge-pop, which, I guess, ultimately is what Billy is producing these days.
I'm pretty excited for the fall tour after having immersed myself in this disc. I like it alot more than Machina, that's for sure.
i don't post often but am trying to change that, hi to all.
I am a huge pumpkins fan and I think the CD is pretty good. I also have an admitted weakness for Zwan...and jimmy chamberlin complex too. You guys should check it out if you haven't yet. I saw them live in Columbus about a month ago and it was amazing...Billy being happy and actually making music (aside from FutureEmbrace) is good.
I really dig Bring the light, but of course none of the songs compare to the pumpkins glory days.

i cant find room for it on the pod any longer. Due to this site's "sharing music" thread. Great stuff there. But I just want to say, I love THE Smashing Pumpkins. Billy and Jimmy should really change the name. Either that or get James and D'arcy back and play a late night at Bonnaroo
it was definitely a passing fad for me... it was nice to hear new Pumpkins, but nothing groundbreaking so i had to leave it in a pile of cd's in the closet...
