Someone mentioned Stop Making Sense in another thread, which got me thinking about my favorite music dvds . . .
Mine are probably: Stop Making Sense and David Byrne Live at Union Chapel, and a collection of At the Drive In/Mars Volta stuff we got off of Ebay (it's a bootleg, but it's got an interesting variety of stuff on it)

I thoroughly enjoy Frank Zappa's Dub Room Special DVD. Baby Snakes is great too, but it can seem a little long (and I'm a hardcore Zappa fan!)
The Bonnaroo 2004 DVD is probably my favorite of the 3 roo sets. I just rented the Concert for Bangladesh and was surprised by how good it was. I even enjoyed Ravi Shankar's Indian music. That guy is a bad-ass.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I really like the Coachella DVD. They did a good job with the interviews and the music selection. However, there are some scenes with some candy ravers that are both hilarious and disgusting at the same time. Still, I think that the Coachella DVD is better than the Roo DVDs except maybe the 2004 Roo DVD that you can't actually buy. That one is super solid - especially the whole juxtaposition of Dave Matthews Band and the Black Keys and how they get to the show and their overall experience.
I am a big fan of Ted Leo's Dirty old Town DVD, which has a good mix of songs and Ted just waxing poetic in between songs. However, the introduction scene (introduced by David Cross no less) is a little rough to watch, as Ted butchers the first song that he does solo.
Also, the Fearless Freaks, although not a true music DVD but more of a documentary, is probably my favorite of them all.
I recently got the Jesus Lizard DVD, and although the quality is not great, it is raw and powerful, which is what Jesus Lizard is all about. I felt like I was 19 or 20 watching that one.
The Directors series DVDs - specifically the Cunningham, Jonze, and Gondry ones are all awesome but not band specific.
I was a little disappointed by the new Nirvana DVD, as there is too much intermixed stuff that seems like it was just thrown in there. But the music is so good that I will still stick it in occasionally.
The Manitoba/Caribou DVD is also great. It does not show the band, but has what the band shows on their backdrop during their live shows, which is coordinated with each of the songs they play live. I have spent many a night watching that one. The Books DVD is similar in format.
By the way, Hilari, your boy Josh was the one that got me the Keepingintime DVD which is also top notch. Thanks again for that one.
I am a big fan of music DVD's though. If you find a good one then you can really immerse your senses. I have the Flaming Lips one being shipped to me, so I am really looking forward to that one this weekend.
Hard to select favorites when I lurve every "music" DVD I own, so here is my collection:
All 3 Bonnaroo DVD's Incubus: Alive at Red Rocks Meeting People Is Easy(Radiohead) Phish: Live at Vegas Phish: Bittersweet Motel Phish: IT Phish: Live In Brooklyn Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii (Director's Edition) Red Hot Chili Peppers: Funky Monks The Up In Smoke Tour
If I was forced to pick a favorite or be fed to sharks, I guess it would probably be PF: Live At Pompeii.
Well, the two in heaviest rotation right now that would have to be near the top are Rage Against the Machine's Battle Of Mexico City (definitely at their peak!) and Collective Soul's Music In High Places - Live In Morroco (all acoustic w/stunning locations and great sound!)
Course in a week, it will be a different answer.... ;D

-Talking Heads - "Stop Making Sense" (classic, pure and simple. if you haven't seen it, you're not really a music fan yet) -Gorillaz - "Demon Days" (perfectly done though Shaun Ryder does his best to totally fvck it up) -Bad Brains - "Live At CBGB" (raw and gritty, like it should be. hardcore at it's finest) -Ministry - "In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up" (you have to see it to believe it. a great film) -DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist - "Product Placement" (more of a documentary but it's still great) -The Mars Volta - "Live At The Electric Ballroom" (VHS but as good as it gets until they release an official dvd) -Portishead - "Roseland, NY" (c'mon. portishead....live.....with an orchestra. yeah) -Napalm Death - "Live Corruption" (classic hardcore metal done by the masters) -Spinal Tap - "The Return Of..." (full length concert film by the men who brought us "big bottom". the Folksmen guest star) -Various Artists - "Scratch" (very interesting documentary with some great performance clips)
Honorable mention: The ATDI/Mars Volta bootleg that The Log Lady already mentioned. (the quality varies GREATLY from clip to clip but, when it's good, it's fvcking GREAT)
....And for those who don't know: The "KEEPINTIME" dvd is an incredible, free-form mixture of hip-hop scratching and jazz percussion. It features the likes of Shortkut, Cut Chemist, NuMark, MadLib, Derf Reklaw, Paul Humphrey, Earl Palmer and James Gadson. If you don't already have a copy, it may be hard to find....but it's worth the search!

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. And to go off topic for a moment, if you haven't heard "Weird Al"'s parody 'Trapped in the Drive-Thru' from his most recent album, you really need to.
Now, regarding music DVDs, I would defend to the death that "This Is Spinal Tap" is the greatest of them all. For concert DVDs I love Bela Fleck & The Flecktones "Live at the Quick", and the Bonnaroo 2003 DVD is my favorite there. And you gotta love "The Last Waltz". Man, what a show.

The most sparkely diamonds in my collection are (not in any particular order...) Stop Making Sense Led Zep Box Set White Stripes- Under Blackpool Lights David Gilmour In Concert The Last Waltz Pink Floyd- Live at Pompeii Void- Flaming Lips video collection Iron Maiden- Visions of the Beast (video collection) Monterey Pop Woodstock '94 (only because I was there and it helps me relive the magic) The Wall Hendrix- Blue Wild Angel The Essential Clash Weird Tales of the Ramones (awesome box set, 3 cd's, one dvd video collection/documentary called "Lifestyles of the Ramones," and a KICKASS comic book)
I am not at home with my collection, so I am probably missing something here, but all of these are great
Funny thing, in 2001, I actually bought a DVD player, not for movies, but specifically because I wanted to collect concert DVD's

Dug it out of the back of the CD cabinet tonight and blew off the dust - LOL! Forgot how AWESOME this one is!! You are SOOOO right! It has literally been FOREVER since I watched it.....I forgot that Dave was a Taylor man too! I don't think I was even playing when I bought this one...so it's been at least a couple years since I popped this one in....
Oh wow! The original Pink - Geldof! And ending the concert with Part VII of Shine On....how cool was that ;D Need to clean out my CD closet more often! And was so hyped had to slap in Live At Knebworth and watch the Floyd part for dessert....not as good, but some live "Run Like Hell" was a good end to the night. Karma for reminding me!
Stop Making Sense is the best concert film ever (best filmmaking, not necessarily the best music, although that's great too).
I love Monterey Pop.
Best moment of music I have on DVD: Ben Harper in studio w/ Blind Boys extra on the Pleasure and Pain DVD. Very goosebumpy. Like life-changing goosebumpy. Makes instantly clear why I don't care that Ben's albums are mediocre lately and why people who dismiss him are dumb.
Spike Jones, Chris Cunningham, & Michel Gondry - "the work of directors" 3 dvd set Flaming lips - Fearless Freaks Radiohead - 7 commercials Pink Floyd- Live at Pompeii
- I wish they'd come out with more music video dvds - it's not like the music video channels are playing them anymore! I could watch them online but I'd like to have them to put on the tv and just play in the background when I'm hanging out/friends are over/etc.
