OK, I'm only on track two of my first listen through this first album, and while neither of the first two tracks blows me away, it is clear that Erykah is just warming up and is ready to bring it as always. Nothing out there really compares to Badu for me. I feel priveleged just to be checking out some new material.
She would be the ultimate Bonnaroo add, but I think there may be too much diva there to be anything but a headliner. I feel like Superfly must have tried. She definitely brings it live (understatement).
Matches "Mama's Gun" in the Baddest Album Cover possible category.
On track 3 now... this album is P-funked out...but I'd kind of like to hear some hits or hooks or more upbeat catchier numbers show up soon.
Will check in with a full review later...I love Badu as much as I love anyone the last decade or so.
EDIT: First time through whole album-minorly dissappointed. It definitely may grow on me, but not up to the level of her past work on one listen. Real weird and cool and funky and unique...but not as good as the high bar she's set in the past.
I will give this a listen sometime tommorow (or even tonight, it all depends...) But I looooove Erika Badu. There's not really much else I can say, she's one of the singly best female hip hop artists to ever come about.
